Welcome, friends, to the 160th Random Banter thread. May it be another celebration of friendship, community, and randomness!

Rules List

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

Nope, mnemonic technique, link everything together, it takes a bit to remember but you get all the details that way. Also, related to the way I got the nickname in my sig which through a series of events ended up being retold on a random banter which I know was Haruki's so that's how the chain begins.

I don't think the number of syllables is the only factor. Your forum name has only two syllables, and yet I can't call you without a nickname.

I already claimed this thread. I'm pretty sure it can't grow out of my grasp.

We'll slow down once our fingers begin to hurt, I'm sure.

Letters is also a factor, and the amount you have to think about it while typing. That's why lala has become somewhat more common thatn LaLa for LaZodiac's nickname.

It's growing out of your control already! Beware!

You forgot the brief threads.

It has to be less than the original though two is THE number, though the first axiom takes precedence over the second one.

That' what they said...

I'm only counting the ones that reached completion. Seriously, it would be amazing if this thread finished within 24 hours.

It doesn't have to be less than the original. MoonCat's nickname is Luna, for instance.

I guess it's possible to target your location through IP tracking, and plane ticket fares are kinda high on this time of the year, but it would be worth it.

I believe the international meet-up was a joke, though I hope it's not.

The fanfic was a joke, it never got done, I have a tendency to get really involved when writing and it would take a great while, apart from the fact that I wouldn't feel comfortable impersonating other playgorunders (even if by need of characterization) by using them as protagonists.

And last, I'd much rather not talk about the Brain Bleach requiring piece of work, bad writing, mediocre art and badly done characterization were only the surface of the disaster that it was, I recognized the horribleness of it, and I had been working on it for a complete week of vacations, so I'd much rather not continue on what it contained.

Wrote an EXCELLENT summary of the next chapter in my novel that has me excited about where the story is going and lets me add a layer of intrigue to the plot, and then for an encore I took a walk down to the local eatery and worked out the pseudo-physics and how to get around relativity for a completely unrelated project.

Thinking is fun!

(Basically the idea is they discovered that photons have a non-zero mass and ergo do not actually travel at the speed of light. Based on this discovery they realized that gravity acts as a bunch of little "hooks" into the fabric of space-time and gives you "space drag" which accounts for why it begins to take infinite energy to accelerate as you approach C. The solution they discovered for this was to create a form of shielding that would reflect all the gravitons in a specific bubble around the space craft, thus eliminating the drag that prevents acceleration. The first questions asked by scientists were along the lines of, "Is relativity preserved?" and the answer is surprising. The answer is, "Yes. The ship and its crew are no longer a part of this universe and therefore no longer need to follow this universe's laws." Which means that the energy shields of this universe are a happy side-effect of the FTL drives.)

Then for an encore I went and thought up the major advances in interstellar travel for the past 140 generations. I've covered their communication systems (Quantum communications like in ME 2), a backup instant teleportation system (a combination of quantum communications and "flipping" dark matter to, well, matter), as well as a progression of FTL drive characteristics (it started with the shields, moved on to self-contained anti-matter singularities, then super-dense anti-matter cores with the addition of the shielding, then super-dense anti-dark-matter cores with the addition of shielding, and finally self-contained temporary anti-matter singularities with the addition of super-dense anti-dark-matter "anchors" and shielding).

I need to get back to taking regular walks.

@Thufir: Before RB #1?

The threads didn't have rules when they started.

I meant your lack of friends... I dunno, I could go visit you. And marry you. :smalltongue:

We seem to be moving back towards the "Wow it really is Spring, isn't it?" conversation. Except that it's now Summer.

What? No! My ... mysterious summer crush is in another state currently. You perv. :smalltongue: It is weird that so many RBers started hooking up last thread.

Yep, there it is.

And I do have friends, I just don't know their real names, or what they look like.

You could get us on facebook. There's a whole group of Playgrounders on Facebook.

Which RBers hooked up in the last thread? We were just talking about the strange fanfic and Koorly's significant other as I recall. And joking around.

Kurli is such a prominent RBer she counts as several.
Alternatively, well, that SO has yet to be identified...

No Playgrounders hooked up with each other IRL. I just got a significant other about the same time as Kurly, which lead to the weird ships.

You don't know that for certain, and congratulations. Is it actual official SO-ness rather than just a crush now?

Why not? On that note, there should be an international meetup. In 2015. Yes, random, I know.

The idea has been suggested before. But given difficulties involved, it seems much more likely we'll just continue with the meetups we have, and when some Playgrounders can manage it, they'll sometimes cross oceans to attend other countries' meetups.

I've actually already participated in a truly global internet group meetup.
It was back during the last century.

A couple of guys that had met through an online chat got married, and invited all the regulars of that chat room to join them for a ceremony in New Orleans.
There were attendees from the UK, Sweden, Canada and Australia alongside the Americans. It was an awesome (but very hot and humid) weekend at the beginning of June.

Edit:
Also, wouldn't a shiny RB ninja train defeat the purpose of it being a ninja train?
Shiny stuff are easily spotted and attract attention, something a ninja is trying to avoid.

how does that even work? Which reminds me of the time when I, having just read the first Harry Potter came up with why the cloak was dumb. Why would there be a hole? It makes it impossible to see anything that's under the cloak, yes. So it'll just look like air, which is also impossible for us to see. I had a bigger issue with the cloak. If it's invisible, isn't it very easy to lose it? Seriously, say that you're sneaking somewhere, and you take it off. How do you find it again to put it on without groping blindly all over the place? If it does become visible when not worn, why? Does this mean that it only works if humans are under it? What if I want to conceal something by wrapping it in my cloak?

The second dog is my brother's dog, 'Witte', who is a Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier. 80% fluffy fur and almost no actual body mass.

Disregard the cats. after all, they're just cats obviously plotting to take over the world.

Witte and Busiga are soooo cute!

Witte is pretty cute, yes..

The cat isn't actually called 'Busiga'. The word 'Busiga' in Swedish means 'The Playful' or 'The mischievous'.
Actually, I think he may be called 'Busen', which has the same meaning as 'Busiga'. So the caption for that picture is something like 'The mischievous Mischievous'.

how does that even work? Which reminds me of the time when I, having just read the first Harry Potter came up with why the cloak was dumb. If it hides everything under the cloak, then there will be a Harry potter shaped hole in the universe walking around, but if it only hides itself then it should ct the same way as a clear sheet and not hide Harry. I was seven when this occurred to me.
Apparently technology is getting near that, and it appears it really isn't that implausible. (http://science.howstuffworks.com/invisibility-cloak.htm)

Undoubtedly. Penguins are the best things ever.
I concur

What about pandas? Smae coloring, but softer, more huggable, and don't need to eat fish to survive.

And the adult versions as well, very sweet dogs. I'm not very fond of the habit of tail clipping them though. :smallannoyed:
Pandas are sadly not fit to living.
Also, penguin plushies are more readily available than panda plushies.

Also, Science Fair it's around nine p.m. and only a small zone is illuminated, the rest is on the dark.

Flight 110 from Guayaquil: you know it's Monday if you see this one.
Flight 159 from Miami: You know it's Friday if you see this one going to the West and Tuesday if it's coming from the north.

Nine pages, you snooze, you miss out on nine pages of people making meta conversations and in jokes.

Almost the opposite of me then, I basically had lots of spring, summer's barely even going to start until July, and winter had one thing of snow, and then it just stayed mildly chilly and green for the rest of the time when it was supposed to be winter.
