The quality (or lack of it, in general) of WotC's art came up in another thread, and I argued that while they're few and far apart, there is good 3.5 art.

So, being a lazy bastard that I am, I'm asking you* to prove it. :smallcool:

*Yes, I meant you specifically, not some general "you", so get cranking! :smalltongue:

For taste, here's Wayne Reynolds on Eberron:

Favorite? The Black Hand, of course!

I can't think of any 3.5 art I've ever been thrilled by.

But I'm also left profoundly unthrilled by Pathfinder's art and 4e's art and, uh, 99% of what you might find in an art museum, so maybe I'm just hard to please.

This is true, and I appreciate you noticing, but I try not to be sarcastic during civil conversations.

This piece has more character to it than most fantasy art I've seen. So much "good" fantasy art these days is photorealistic and also bland, bland, bland. This piece captures perfectly the feel that a book of the dead should have. It captures that feel of oldness, where magic is really magic. It depicts a dark ritual that actually feels dark. (Actually, I always think of the Night on Bald Mountain piece from Fantasia when I see this one. I feel they evoke similar things.) And it does all these things in a lot of subtle ways. The expressions of the skeletons in the foreground are deliciously creepy, and the glow coming from the crypt wouldn't work nearly so well if the illustration was more photorealistic. I'll go so far as to call this one of the few truly artistic pieces of 3.5 art.

I like photorealistic; I don't like photorealistic with unrealistic pastels. Nothing is as bright as D&D makes it out to be unless standing in broad daylight. In fact in most dungeons the picture should be reduced to:

I even didn't buy Magic of Eberron because the art made me wince.Me neither, I've never really liked that Reynolds guy, at least his people/humanoids* - they don't have elbows or knees; their flesh is often lumpy, weirdly coloured or strangely plasticy; and they always have this weird rosy nose.

I do like a lot of D&D art, but what I really want to see is a good picture of a couatl and a unicorn. They're all - especially the ones in the Monster Manuals - so ridiculously boring and bland, and these are two of the creatures who should be especially grand-looking.

I counter with:

Lost Empires of Faerūn, or the Magelord's Striped Trousers:

AMG YES THE STRIPED TROUSERS

I like the Planar Champion's sword and armour. And the background.

And I still don't care much for the FR ones. Although I just remembered, the Teflammar Shadowlord (I think, it's the upsidedown spider climbing drow with the mask) is not bad either. From UE, if i remember correctly.

Other than a handful (like Mialee) I love most of the pieces in this thread. Maybe I just like D&D art :smalltongue:

I also have to agree though that 4e has an extremely high level of polish to it. It seems so ultra-refined and badass. 4e had the first drawing of a Drow that made me want to play one.

Huh, that's in the PHBII art gallery, but I can't find it in my copy of the book, and can't recall ever having seen it. Ah, well, that book does have some infamously good art.

Someone mentioned art from Ferun books earlier. I've always liked a lot of the art from their Underdark supplement:

D&D seems to have a hard time balancing the background perspective with the foreground action; usually they either don't use a background at all or they throw one up that has no perspective at all. It look likes wall paper in a lot of instances!

by this guy (http://staino.deviantart.com/), who does some really nice D&D character art.

O.O

Mialee is a woman! I would never have guessed! And a pretty fine-looking one, at that.

Wayne Reynolds really does know how to draw elbows (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/hoh_gallery/91973.jpg) and other joints (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/hoh_gallery/91970.jpg).

It's usually just how he draws his armor's joints that make the elbows look like they're not there. This is clearly visible in Tordek's armor in the first pic, but if you look at Regdar's and Alhandra's armor in the second pic, the joints are still clearly visible, not to mention almost everyone else in the first pic (Mialee, Lidda, and the vampires).

Also, see Zombie Jozan's clunky bracers in the second pic. (More evidence that Jozan is evil)

I just plain don't like the way he draws people.
