So how does Awakening work and what book is it from?

Sorry for being such a noob, I'm a bit frazzeled after being kicked out of the DM's chair for using MMII and then watching my players change to 4th ed in the blink of an eye. :smalleek:

Are you referring to the spell awaken (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/awaken.htm)?

Why yes I am, thank you good sir. Any idea how I'd run a player using one as a race, as is so often discussed here?

If it's only a 1HD race, I think you just calculate the ability bonuses (subtract until you have 10 or 11 in all your scores, and see what the results are - those are the racial benefits) and then add the INT, WIS and CHA from Awaken, remove the 1HD to replace it with a class level, and you're good to go. Additional RHD would grant additional benefits as per the rules for increasing HD.

Word to the wise: Housecats have a good chance of killing commoners.

Solution: Play an Awakened Housecat Wizard.

Indeed. Then you can break the game and kill Commoners.

Hey man, those chickens can get dangerous.

F.Y.I., there are also spells Awaken Undead and Awaken Construct which do the same thing to undead and constructs, respectively. I don't recall which books they are in.

I don't think there's any hard rules for LA, though, so you'll need to talk to the DM about what's reasonable for your particular choice.
