I was young, and I was alone, and entirely engrossed in reading books on yowies, whereupon parched with thirst, I decided to cross the kitchen threshold to get a drink of water.
This was during summer, where to darken the neighbourhood was considered chivalrous.
Crossing into the kitchen, I had to walk before an open door, which led to a tree- hidden path leading from and to the back garden.
What I saw at that door, I will never forget.
It was a squat, hunched figure, vaguely reminscient of a lump of solid clay, yet alive and exuding an unimaginable stench. It just stood there, and I could see no indication of any eyes.
I had to nope up the stairs.
