A master gesture is an action or moment that shows what a character is really about. Their personality, their morals, their thoughts. What strips do you think could be the master gestures of the Order, Team Evil, et cetera?

Examples:

Team Good (and Belkar)

:roy:http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0442.html

:durkon:http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0084.html

:belkar:http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0611.html

:vaarsuvius: (post splice) http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0679.html

:haley: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0772.html

O-Chul: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0547.html

Elf Commander http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0707.html

Tarquin (Don't really know where to put him) http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0763.html

Team Evil (+LG)

:xykon: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0657.html

:redcloak: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0451.html

Tsukiko http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0700.html

:nale: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0061.html

:thog: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0051.html

So if you had to use one strip to define a character, which would it be?

I think Durkon's is 84, not 83.

One could call Elan the Court Gesture of the comic. Yes it is a pun.

Well... I might be jumping ahead on these, since the characters have only had a few telling scenes, but...

Team Peregrine's Commander (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0707.html)
and Tsukiko (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0700.html), 6th panel.

edit: Naturally. Fixed.

For Roy, I would say it is the moment on top of the silver dragon when he confronted Xykon. Impossible odds. Suicidal bravery. If I don't stop you, who will? It's a major character development moment when he shifts from following the quest to ridding the world of Xykon -- of evil -- for it's own sake. For the sake of all the androgynous elves and shifty rogues et al who would not exist in a world ruled by Xykon.

Some say the highest expresson of love is to lay down one's life for his friends. Roy did exactly that. With an Int 18 and considerable wisdom he knew the odds. But he willingly risked them for the lives and wellbeing of strangers -- including the Azurites -- most of whom he did not know and who had dragged him halfway across a continent.

Doing good to those who have done him evil, Roy typifies the lawful good alignment, moreso even than the paladins of Azure City.

Respectfully,

Brian P.

For :vaarsuvius: I nominate http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0679.html

Vaarsuvius is kind of tricky, because his attitude changed drastically right about then. Pre-679, I would say http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0677.html. 677 fits pre-soul spice too, except he is acknowledging Blackwing's existence.

For Elan after the Battle of Azure City, I would suggest this strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0558.html).

I don't know if we'll see him anymore, but I think #728, frame 6 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0728.html) feels like it is a designed master gesture for Gannji.

For Haley I say 116 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0116.html)

That would certainly work for her old personality, but the character development she's gotten since then has made her more than just a greedy treasure hoarder.

:haley:: This (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0774.html)includes an awful lot of Haley's background and personality in one strip.

Brief and to the point (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0337.html) for Nale. Takes him awhile to figure out that he can't make his bragging needlessly complicated.

Change the team good to order of the stick, and include outer teams apart.
