as a slight concession to one of my players who wants to play a tiefling for the summer.

I'm trimming some abilities to make the race LA+0

however, I am aware of the existence of a "Lesser Tiefling"

however, I don't have a clue what seperates the "lesser" from the "normal"

so if someone could enlighten me, I'd appreciate it.


failing that.


what would you have to trim off the basic Tiefling to make it LA+0

also, in a related vein.

can somebody confirm or deny the Tiefling having a racial proficiency in matial weapons?

SRD says one thing, my Monster Manual says another.

Everything under the "Tiefling Base Racial Features" is for the +0 LA Tiefling. It is frequently called the 'lesser tiefling' because there are a number of other low-LA races named 'Lesser Yadda'.

The "The Tiefling Racial Class" is intended to be taken instead of a character level for the extra Tiefling abilities. It isn't necessary, and you are free to not do so and simply stick with the +0 LA Tiefling with full class levels. Note that despite being a racial 'class', they don't get HD, skills, feats, ability increases, or anything else you would associate with having a class level - they just get the listed abilities.

Lesser planetouched are Humanoid (Planetouched) instead of Outsider (Native), which means they have the benefits and drawbacks of the humanoid type, but can be affected by spells that affect Outsiders.

Both MMI and SRD tieflings are proficient with martial weapons, due to their outsider type (see page 313 of MM).

Lesser planetouched have racial statistics identical to any other planetouched race, except they lose the outsider type and gain the Humanoid (planetouched) type, which gives them the downsides to being outsiders and humanoids at the same time, in exchange for being brought down to LA +0.

No you don't. Tieflings don't get martial proficiency in their stat-block.

well... on the bright side of things, I can just explain this then

(the problem was that I told him normal tieflings don't get it, due to the aforementioned discrepency between the SRD and the MM entry)

but I digress.
