Urban Companion (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/we/20070228a) is an alternative class feature for Rangers and Druids from Cityscape Web Enhancement. Just realized how it practically fixes everything wrong with the Ranger Animal Companion (ok, so the selection doesn't contain many combat beasts owing to them being really small; can't have it all). Sure, you get the abilities at the rate of ½ Ranger level, but that doesn't really matter.

It gets full BAB, 3/4th HP and full skills (and full saves, of course). That's like a second Ranger, except without spells (big loss, to be sure, but 100 times less of a problem than getting a combat companion that can't fight). Compared to the normal Ranger animal companion, it's like 100000 times more useful (That is, it actually does something! Oh, and the relevant abilities scale).
