i know i have found this before, but now i cant seem to find it, is there not a way sorcerers can learn a metamagic spell to reduce its casting time? like, for example, learning a quickened magic missile as its 5th level spell?

No. That is the mechanic for a Spirit Shaman, as they choose their readied spells for the day.

Sorcerers have the Metamagic Specialist ACF from PHBII, and Rapid Metamagic feat from CMage. You might be thinking of the feat Arcane Preparation, which allows you to prepare a spell altered by metamagic, but Rapid Metamagic is a better feat for this. It allows you to cast all of your metamagic'd without increasing casting time.

yea, but i was mostly looking in the interest of using a 6th level known spell slot for a 4th level spell. i would like to get wings of flurry in there and throw a metamagic on it or something to not make it a total loss.

Maybe take the extra spell feat? Then you don't have to set your 6th level spell known on fire. Also, a Runestaff with just Wings of Flurry would be very reasonable at your level.

Sorcerers can learn spells not in the standard rules just like wizards can. See the research rules in the DMG.

It's fairly clear to me that a quickened magic missile is not overpowered as a level 5 spell, so you research it, get your GM to approve it, and if he does you learn it as one of your very limited number of spells known.

Or you could just get a Lesser Quicken Metamagic Rod or some other item and NOT waste a spell known.

Those explicitly don't work for Sorcerers.

He also doesn't really want Quickened Magic Missile. His other post states that he wants Wings of Flurry, but only has a 6th level SK spot open, and doesn't want to waste the extra two levels.

OP: Is trading out another 4th level spell an option for you? Are you on an even level up?

Alternatively, if you aren't taking an even level, there's retraining rules in PHB 2. Page 194, for the spells/powers section.

I'm a big fan of drakehelms and runestaves for these purposes.

Sorcerer, SRD:

Upon reaching 4th level, and at every even-numbered sorcerer level after that (6th, 8th, and so on), a sorcerer can choose to learn a new spell in place of one he already knows. In effect, the sorcerer "loses" the old spell in exchange for the new one. The new spell’s level must be the same as that of the spell being exchanged, and it must be at least two levels lower than the highest-level sorcerer spell the sorcerer can cast. A sorcerer may swap only a single spell at any given level, and must choose whether or not to swap the spell at the same time that he gains new spells known for the level.
Just switch out another 4th level spell known.

2 things:

1. can't you do that anytime?

2. wings of flurry a loss? it is unbounded damage to all opponents you select in a 30' radius in a 4th lvl force effect spell! my GM capped it and said it was line of site but even then it is great.

empower adds 2 lvls and maximize adds 3

Metamagic'd versions of spells are not seperate spells that you can just learn that way. Sorry.

I'm pretty sure there's a variant sorcerer that exchanges the familiar for the ability to spontaneously cast metamagicked spells at normal casting times (and in fact can use the Quickened Spell feat normally)
