What was your favorite finale/end to a campaign?
My favorite was in a 3.5 Eberron game I was in. We had previously found that Mourning was the result of a single epic spell (which had a casting time of 20 years). The spell was developed and cast by Khyber itself. Worse yet, before the game began, Khyber had developed two epic spells: Mourning and True Mourning. One of the mitigating factors in the development of True Mourning is that the caster must have previously developed and cast Mourning, and must begin casting True Mourning immediately afterward. (because Khyber's stats are not specifically given, we assume its spellcraft is high enough to cast a spell of this magnitude, but only with sufficient mitigating factors to move the plot forwards. Most importantly, both of these epic spells have very long casting times.) True Mourning is identical in effect to Mourning, except that it has enough area to cover the entirety of Eberron. Obviously, directly fighting Khyber was out of the question. In the end, we traveled to the Head of Eberron (in Argonnessen) and performed a ritual to awaken Eberron (of course, we had to deal with the evil dragons sent by Tiamat to stop us). Thus began an epic duel between Eberron and Khyber. The duel did not last long (it lasted "only" 9 years of game time, though since the players could do almost nothing to influence it we fast-forwarded to the end). In the epilogue, Khyber was defeated (not slain), and returned to a deep slumber. Of course, Khyber will eventually awaken on its own, and either re-attempt to cast True Mourning, or come up with another plan entirely. But at least during our character's life times, we had saved every mortal civilization on Eberron, including the dragons.

So what was your favorite ending? Was it a game you were playing in, or did you come up with the ending as DM?

No where near as epic but a finale none the less (level 6). The standard White-Hearth Eberron campaign except the DM had done some serious alterations. The end chamber in Mourneland that had the diamond shaped schema in it we wanted was incased in a giant block of opaque blue glass.

We hacked down the glass and in doing so found a human skeleton preserved perfectly inside the blue glass. After our initial crack and the freeing of the schema, the skeleton inside cracked the remainder and the entire block shattered, leaving behind the skeleton incased in an ever changing layer of blue glass.

The figure had a human appearance save for the fact he was made up of translucent blue glass and every time it spoke and moved, blue glass cracked free of it even as more grew to account for the movement. Making a horrible cracking noise every time it did anything.

We recognized the features at once, glass or no glass it was Aaren d'Cannith the former Patriarch (DM rules) of House Cannith. After discovering his new...form, he quickly adapted demanding the return of the schema and planned to inform his son he was still alive by sending a large layer of molten glass at Sharn to inform his son that he was still alive. I should point out apart from the visible bone white skeleton everything else appeared made of blue glass, take a table-top model and imagine it as made of glass with its skeleton in the center, that's what he looked like.

In our shock we returned the schema to him and it wasn't until our DM was playing this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWfrDG0nmlk) in the background as 5 dark blue glass obelisks rose from the floor that this might be bad. We had until the song ended to reach conclusions and stop Aaren if we didn't want him to coat Sharn in glass.

What proceeded was easily the most epic fight I've ever been in with I think each of our 4 characters using 5 actions points each during that fight. (action points are buffed and enable the rule of cool usually for bonus damage) Aaren wielded glass with the skill a Pyromancer would fire. Summoning glass elementals, rapid healing, incasing comrades in glass and changing the terrain on a whim.

Our rogue finally managed to get off an assassinate with froze him and the other members made sure to ground him to dust before anything else tricky happened. Thus ended the campaign with us stepping blinking into the sunlight, holding the schema having slain a goddamn patriarch of Cannith!
