This (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=11251276&postcount=274) post made me think. I didn't play earlier editions so I didn't know that it was like that. Maybe this is a good idea?
Please, post your suggestions about how you would incorporate this into 3.X. Maybe a virtual +2 or +3 LA for casters? Or that they get fewer XP? Or maybe non-casters get more XP?

In 2nd edition you couldn't just happily switch classes with each level up - only humans could switch classes and even they had to redo it from level 1 with their new class. As such, for 3rd edition you'd need to give a higher XP cost for each new level of a full casting class you wanted to take.

Even then, the slow road to power would still result in being more powerful. Casters in 2nd edition ended up more powerful than fighters just because they could do area of effect damage. You'd need to buff up fighters a lot to compensate.

I did some work in the direction. You can see it here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=174523).

Well i am going to betray my age.... 1E had separate tables... i forget if lvl 2 fighter was achieved at 1500 or 2000 and the wizard had to wait till 3 or 4000XP.

It also had separate attack table for each class and an armor class rating that went from unarmored 10 to "max" armor class of -10.

Fighters had to get 2000 XP, rangers and paladins needed 2250 XP for level 2. Wizards needed 2500 XP for level 2.

It should also be noted that each class type had a different saving throw progression - warriors tended to suck a lot until higher levels while the casters were a lot better off from the start.
