I'm playing a crossbow sniper character and was wondering what race would be best. I'm open to monster races as long as they could be found in the city. I'm looking with races with high Dex and little or no level adjustment. Any help is appreciated.

I recommend an Air Goblin for you. +4 Dex with LA of 0. Check out http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19546874/Master_Player_Race_List_Version_2.0 for more.

Do you think I could convince my DM to let me be a Muckdweller from Forgotten Relms Serpent Kingdoms? +6 dex -6 str LA 0

Githzerai get +6 Dex, with 2 LA. They also get a bunch of other bonuses.

serpent kingdoms has a bad rep. also muck dwellers are so small you will run into problems with things like doors.

edit also you may very well be to weak to hold a hewards handy haversack much less any other gear

Whisper Gnome, iirc, gets +2 Dex, and a LOT of sneak-related bonuses. You may want to look into that.
Edit: No LA.

They're also ECL 4, which can be a problem.

My vote's for Catfolk. The +4 Dex is good, the +10 base land speed is great for a character that'll depend on maneuverability, and the access to Catfolk Pounce is not a bad thing for any character!

There's also the Warforged Scout which could be fun. I'm not a huge fan of Catfolk, so I'd but my money on Whisper Gnome or Air Goblin. Both are very solid choices.

What book are catfolk in anyway? I keep hearing about them and they sound like fun but I can't find them in any of my books.

What version are you playing?

In Pathfinder, standard Goblins (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/rules-for-monsters/monsters-as-pcs#TOC-Goblin) get +4 dex and are Small (Harder to hit, always good for non-frontline troops!), but still get 30 ft move speed. Also, they get a total of a +8 natural bonus to Stealth (Move Silently/Hide), which might be VERY useful.

Thanks. White text.

If Pathfinder, CR changes = LA. So you can take young + advanced for free, giving you an extra +8 dexterity, +4 int, +4 wis, +4 cha.

Also decreases your size by one step, which means you'll get a total of some +8 to your stealth check. With goblin and stuff, you get a crazy stealth modifier. Actually, here's a thread:

Small races get a +1 to hit and AC, which is as good as +2 dex. Something to remember when almost none of your damage comes from weapon size. Heck reduce person is as good as cat's grace and a bunch of potions are cheap to carry around. Not so hot within 500 feet of things that can grapple though.

Reduced size also gives +4 Hide, which is quite handy for pretty much anyone who isn't tanking, and even then.

Small size isn't helpful for Crossbow Sniper though, so it's not quite like +2 Dex.

Most small races gives a bonus to Dex though.... (non whisper gnomes being the only exception that springs to mind)

The Gloura can be found on wizards website. It gets +10 dex for 2 LA & 7 RHD, for an ECL of 9. It also gets casting as a 7th level bard, great stat adjustments, charisma to AC, and a set of wings. Fey HD are kinda crappy, though.

Ah ya 1 less damage, and probably another -1 for weapon size, but your attack bonus is more important anyway. I would hope the player would have other sources of damage if he's going to keep up.

Master race list (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19546874/Master_Player_Race_List_Version_2.0)

This is a master list of races available to player for first level characters as described in Chapter 2 in the Players Handbook. As such all the races presented here have a level adjustment of +0 and hit die based on character level. The races will be presented by Name, Ability score adjustments, size, base land speed, and notes on what extraordinary, supernatural, or spell-like abilities they may have, favored class(es), type and subtype if any, and lastly book and page number for reference. This was made to make referencing character races easier and now includes races that were omitted from the earlier editions. Enjoy!

(Just use ctrl-F to search for "+2 dex" "+4 dex" "+6 dex") (And to give another vote for some mentioned above, which seem to be the only +4 or +6 dex races playable at ECL 1 ):

Jermlaine: -6 Str +6 Dex -2 Con -2 Int +6 Wis -6 Cha, tiny, 40 ft., rogue, fey, monster manual 2 pg.131

Muckdweller: -6 Str +6 Dex -2 Wis -2 Cha, tiny, 20 ft. (swim 20 ft.), squirt (ex), monstrous humanoid, serpent kingdoms pg.71

Air Goblin: +4 Dex -2 Str -2 Con, small, 30 ft., rogue, humanoid (goblinoid), unearthed arcana pg.16

---

What kind of game is it? I'm assuming that, between sneak attack dice and weapon flags (flaming, etc), you're not too worried about the bolts/arrows themselves only doing like 1d2 instead of 1d6 damage?

Hey. Their HitDie is just fine.
Also, they have good modifiers and stuff.
To sum it up, they're awesome. Now go play it.
The level adjustment is a bit iffy though...there are probably creatures out there with more bonuses to dex at +2 level adjustment...

Catfolk get +4 Dex IIRC with LA +1
Also in the +1 LA bracket are Chaond (MM2: +4 Dex, +2 Con, -2 Cha) and the Wispling (FF: -2 Str, +4 Dex, int +2).
