I can't find this in the book. Does the GM tell the players the difficulty of their simple actions?
It seems to be implied in the examples that the GM keeps it a secret. But I can't see why that'd be a desirable thing. But it doesn't clarify if it's actually a rule in the text.

It's not in the rulebook, so I say go for whatever.
I generally declare difficulties if it's something that every player is rolling, in order to save time, but otherwise just keep them to myself.

It leaves that up to GM preference. However, the trait ladder is there for a reason, and that reason is to mingle the adjectives with normal description. "You stand before a great chasm" is often an indicator that the difficulty of crossing the chasm would be great, using proper chasm crossing technique.

"You stand before a superb chasm."
or conversely
"You stand before a mediocre chasm."

"You stand before a mediocre chasm."
I will use this at some point, mark my words.

I just hope nobody tries to cross it by placing the skill ladder over it.

You'll have difficulty crossing that Legendary Chasm with the Mediocre Ladder.
