I think I might love legos even more as an adult then a child, I just sorted a 1200+ box and am currently on a break from building them into big blocks.

Legos are awesome. Problem is putting them away. You always miss that one brick. It's OK, though. You won't lose it. Your foot will find it roughly at 2 AM in the dark. You'll probably wake everyone else up, too... but still found it. :smalltongue:

All you have to do is have a clear area to play with them. That way you won't miss any when you pick them up.

Wait, you mean we were supposed to build things according to directions? I guess that makes sense, but I never thought about it. I just have a few giant bins of legos that came from... somewhere. It was a long time ago. I don't remember getting them at all. I definitely don't remember if they came with directions.

Anyway, those are some of the best toys ever.

I could never get into those things. They were impossible to split up, broke too easily, lost too many pieces and I could never build the stuff I saw on the box. I preferred those cardboard bricks.

Broke? How do you break a lego? Do you mean if you built something and dropped it some of the pieces would come apart?

While there are lots of mega Lego projects around, I think this one is my favorite (http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/desk.html). Back when the computer industry was flush with money, one guy demanded in his contract that the company supply him with a working Lego desk. They agreed.

If I ever have kids I'll get them legos. Legos and other build-it-yourself toys. Not too many action figures, there's only so much you can do with them. I once found a half-finished lego motorcycle, I couldn't find the right parts. :smallfrown:

I curently still have two entire shelves full of varios Bionicle figures, with a bin full of many more that are in a state of disrepair, or simply unable to be put up due to a lack of space.

i've been collecting BIONICLE for many years now, and i love putting all the peices together and looking at the result. only problem is that the story is pretty hard to follow. And that they aren't makeing any more bionicles, so that kinda sucks.

Love how this one little peice eventually turns into a giant masked soldier though.

Experiment 387-e: Once a normal community of 387 was constructed, a small mound of Megablocks (a common copy of Lego) was placed near the community. When this happened, everything constructed of 387 stopped moving, turned slowly towards the Megablocks and [EXPUNGED].

Lego Maniac here. It's been a year or two since I bought a set, but rest assured I have most of every set I've ever gotten.

Best way to play once you have 'a lot' is to spread a sheet out on the floor. Then cleanup is quite easy.

Broke too easily? I have never once broken a lego. They're far more likely to break your foot.

Linguistic question: is the noun "lego" countable or uncountable?

I've always treated it as being uncountable. When I was young we had, "some lego", "a lot of lego" or "223 pieces of lego".

I had never heard of the term "legos" until I met Americans on the internet.

Is this some weirdly-specific variation between British and American English?

Officially, both are incorrect, it's "LEGO™ bricks", although I seem to remember when reading the statement on the site that it's preferable to treat it as uncountable.

I've heard both Americans and Britons use both of them, so I don't think it's to do with the country either.

Another Brit who'd never heard 'Legos' before here, only 'Lego'.

I loved the stuff though - it surprises me that I didn't grow up with a permanent Lego-brick shaped scar on my foot! It is pretty much the perfect toy, stimulating imagination, creativity, problem-solving, has enormous replay value...

Very, yes. Of course, I also was very annoying about it as a kid. "No mom, I can't clean my room today. Do you see all those lego on the ground? It would take me more than two hours to sort them, and that's past my bedtime".

I used to play with lego all the time, had mostly medieval sets which I used to sometimes build stuff according to the instructions but most of the time to build custom castles of my own and the like.

I'd also set up battle scenes (I had 20+ lego guys, all with armor).

I actually still have all my lego guys and their equipment, I just lost the pieces.

So naturally I bought more pieces. No medieval stuff yet but I do have a bank, that was fun to build.

HERESY (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ptitlejlrsj8bkviwx). Next you'll be saying Mega Bloks are an acceptable substitute, I suppose?

Broke too easily? I agree on the other points, but I've never in my life seen a broken lego brick. Did you hit it with a hammer or something?
The bricks are fairly hard to break, but some pieces you have to be careful about: minifig hands, minifig accessories, cockpit windows, and really long pieces tend to get broken, as do Technic pieces with thin-walled parts (such as the sockets from Bionicle ball-and-socket joints or the cylindrical axles when exposed to stress beyond their designed limits). They don't usually break easily, but they do break. You tend to find that out when you accumulate several hundred thousand elements over eighteen years of growing up.

They are epic. I collect the City, Castle, and Pirate lines, with occasional exceptions for other things I deem awesome. I'm fortunate enough to have multiple awesome lego stores nearby...I suspect I'm keeping them all in business personally.

There's a *lot* of us twenty-somethings that are into em...and with 3000+ piece count sets being a common thing, they clearly have no problem catering to an older market than they've traditionally been associated with.

For the true addict, I suggest bricklink.com. It's a horrifically addictive site that allows you to purchase sets you may have missed from your childhood and the like.

I used to play it years ago (I remember taking a break waiting for the 2000 edition rules to come out, then drifting away and losing interest.). I had a pretty impressive Imperial army back in the day.

I also had an elite military squad for modern games. It was about 6-8 figs
including a sniper, demolitions, recon, pilot, etc. I built a helicopter and tank for them to use along with a fleet of motorcycles. It was awesome.

There's a LEGO shop in every Legoland theme park, as well as some in fairly large metropolitan areas that lack a Legoland. (Chicago, the Mall of America... at least until the Florida Legoland opens later this year, there's one in Disney World...)

"Where's this 'Legoland' you speak of?" You say? How can one be a LEGO fan without knowing where a Legoland is?
The original is in Billund, Denmark. Then there's one in Windsor; one in Carlsbad, California; and one in Günzberg, Germany. Upcoming parks are in Malaysia and Florida.

True, but I knew kids in my class who would then go on to enact battles, or fly their spaceships around the room making wooshing noises. I never really did that, honestly. Sure, my castles were full of trapdoors for daring escapes, and my ships could send out escape or landing pods, but I just built them. Never really used them.

The official term is "mini-figures," but half of everyone calls them "LEGO Guys." And if you never RPed with LEGO, you've never really played with them, I say.

LEGO guys! That makes sense! I'll make a mental note of that and "mini-figures".

I broke some legos too when my technic lego dragster took a flying leap down the stairs and kind of exploded. I burned out a couple of those technic lego electric motors too. That was the dragsters again.

At one point I sold off all my lego. I always secretly regretted that....

I remember breaking wings for at least one aircraft; luckily I got spares later.

I gave away my LEGO to one of my nephews. Some times I feel nostalgic about LEGO but since I couldn't longer "play" with them for some reason I don't feel that bad about it.

I used to call them Lego Men. As far as I know, I never had any female ones.

I had a female astronaut (from the "Ice Planet" sets). I played her as a Pippi Longstocking type of girl.

I believe the female astronaut came with the big space cruiser (the Deep Freeze Defender) and the ice base (Ice Station Odyssey). She wasn't a common minifig.

I never get build sets I just like the block pieces.
You would probably like the stores then. They have walls of individual parts. You buy a cup (2 different sizes) and fill it however you want. Some folks online have come up with diagrams explaining how to maxamize the number of parts you can fit into the cups. The most basic tip is to put the parts together, don't just toss them into the cup.

Some other links of potential interest:
FBTB.net (http://www.fbtb.net/)-Primarily focused on Star Wars LEGO, but it has a little bit of everything
Eurobricks (http://www.eurobricks.com/)-More of an all in one site with a more open policy when it comes to posting pics of upcoming sets that have questionable origins.

For both sites the forums are where the useful info can be found. Both also have sections devoted to reporting sales.

Sounds like the Deep Freeze Defender, then. It is a fairly large ship... especially compared to other sets of its price tag now (before adjusting for inflation). My brother and I got that and the Galactic Mediator for Christmas (I the Mediator, he the Defender) one year. I think it was '93, but it could have been '94. The Mediator is roughly 90% complete and sitting in my room right now...

There's actually only a handful of LEGO starships that are that large, and pretty much all of them are the mother/flagship types that generally now occupy the $70-$100 range.

I got the gigantic Lego Pirate soldier's battleship.... And I want to get more Imperial soldiers and 4 more cannons, but I have no idea how to get more. The only "just buy a soldier" kit seemed excessive, what with all those weapons. And the ship ended up having 4 cannon missing!

There used to be a set with, IIRC, a pirate, a soldier, and a cannon. It was like...$10. Perhaps less. I bought a giant pile of them when they were on sale for $5 each. Thus, my Imperial Flagship is fully equipped with cannon and troops, and I possess extra cannon for when I buy the pirate ship that's out now(it's also quite short on cannon...not even enough for all of one side!)

I also used the soldier/arsenal kit a few times. Adding an arsenal to the flagship is a win, IMO.

Bricklink or another such site is likely your best option to scoop them up now.

Yes, I quite know about the cannons being insufficient. There's 8 slots and only 4 cannon. I already have lots of swords, muskets, and pistols already, so I don't need more from the soldier's arsenal toy. I bought a few other add ons like the dock for the Imperials, and the little treasure island, along with some extra treasure and the lego pirate tic tac toe kit.

Bricklink? What's that? Back when I was big on legos, I didn't have the internet. I want to get enough cannons to fill out the boat, a crow's nest, maybe a sail for the rear of the boat (it's missing one, according to historical boats), and some lego boxes to hold the pistols I have laying around. Finally, some more chain to lengthen the anchor chain would be nice.

What exactly are you trying to find? The interface is a little odd unless you're used to it. I assume you are looking to buy something. If so, you have two options. There is a row of tabs just below the search box and you want the one marked buy. Alternatively, if you know what you are after (a set, specific parts, minifugures), then click on the appropriate white text option in the blue box a little below the tabs. From there, for sets and figures, you have to choose the theme (and subtheme potentially) the set/figure belongs to. For instance, if you want a particular castle, you have to either select Castle and scroll through every set, of choose the subtheme within Castle. The Black Falcons for instance. For themes from the 80s to mid 90s this can be a little odd because there weren't official sub themes and they are named based on popular internet names (I assume) which are based on some of the names of sets within the themes. Again as a for instance, the Black Falcons.

From there, it lists every copy of that set that is for sale. You can set the order they appear (cheap to expensive, for instance). Most will have some kind of description detailing their condition (boxed, complete, mint, etc). Clicking on one of them will take you to the shop page for the shop selling the set. I sell on there but I haven't checked the rules here covering posting links to one's own store, so no shameless self plug this time. The shop page will detail their shipping policies and if they ship to your state/country. From there, if you want the item, you put it into your cart and checkout. Then you get an invoice from the store owner and pay them.

That's the basics and I apologize if you knew all of that already and were asking for something more in depth.

On an another LEGO related note, LEGO is apparently going to make Marvel and DC themed sets. You can see pics of some of the figures here (http://www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=57923&st=0). The DC figures are finished or near finished while the Marvel figures were obviously rushed to have something for Comic Con. Previously LEGO had released sets for individual properties like Spider Man and Batman, but this license appears to be all encompassing this time.

Oh aye, I want to get 4 more cannons for my Imperial Flagship/battleship, a crow's nest, some more Imperial soldiers, and a small mast with sail for the rear of the boat (it should be there, historically speaking).

I think I have a list of some of the part numbers. I could post them here.

I find that website's interface incredibly counterintuitive. Got lost. I even tried to order parts from Lego's website, but that went nowhere fast, since I couldn't even see what I was getting and couldn't find anything with the search function.

Crappy website/order form overall, imho.

Oh you are after parts. Well, that's a different story. From the main page if you click on "Parts" (where it is written in white on teh blue background) it will take you to this (http://www.bricklink.com/browseTree.asp?itemType=P) page. That page takes some getting used to. It takes a while, and some guessing, to figure out what the individual parts are called. Some are easy (like "blocks"). I've never tried to find cannons before now, but they are apparently under Minifig, Weapon (http://www.bricklink.com/browseList.asp?itemType=P&catString=19). I'm not sure why. They are in two pieces, the base and the barrel, so you would need to find both seperately. I imagine most sellers would have both so it shouldn't be too hard. This (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItem.asp?P=4424) is the crow's nest piece. If there are any extra sails for sale, they are here (http://www.bricklink.com/browseList.asp?itemType=P&catString=162), in the cloth section. It does take a while to get used to the logic of the sorting.

You should think twice about ordering parts straight from LEGO. They are usually, not always but in general, more expensive then Bricklink. The upside to ordering through LEGO is that the parts will be new and you can order as many as you want from a single seller. The downside is that unless you are ordering in real quantity it is usually cheaper on Bricklink.

Also, this (http://www.peeron.com/) site can be helpful. If you look at the inventories to some of the sets, the Imperial Flagship (http://www.peeron.com/inv/sets/10210-1) for instance, you can find out the names of the parts. The two sites use a nearly identical naming system for the parts.

Ohh, ohh, nostalgia! Pre-1987 Space Lego!

This (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?S=6803-1) and this (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?S=6870-1) were the first ones I ever got, and I always enjoyed playing with this (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?S=6927-1)one (which also taught me that red plastic viewed through transparent blue plastic looks black).

I also, for some reason, really, really wanted to get this one (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?pg=1&sortBy=Y&sortAsc=A&catType=S&catID=34), but I couldn't afford it with my pocket money, and my mum wouldn't buy it for me (she didn't think it had enough "new" pieces to be worth getting, and didn't realize that "more of the same" is still useful with Lego).

When I got this one (http://www.bricklink.com/catalogItemPic.asp?S=6931-1), I was so proud at having built such a large model that I went to fetch my mum to show here, and while I was out the room, my younger brother dismantled it all :(

The names they've given them in that web site don't match my memory. Did the names vary by country? (I know back then they didn't put names on the box, just in the larger catalogues).

The other thing that struck me looking over all those images are just how small the models now look. Back when I was a half or a third my current height, some of them seemed really big.

Also, until a few years ago, I don't remember ever hearing anyone refer to the "Lego men" as "minifigs" (and I was in the official Lego Club in the 80s). Is this a more recent (or originally non-British) convention?

Space Legos I actually remember coming out were Ice Planet, Spyrius, Space Police and Explorers. So, early 90s. On the other hand, the site seems to have some I'm sure I've never seen, like Roboforce or Unitron. Strange.

There are a few sets that vary their names by country. The one that comes to mind is the Slizer line. Here in 'MERICA, they were known as Throwbots. Slizer wasn't mentioned anywhere except the website, where it's used almost exclusively.

It's the official contraction of the official term, IIRC.

Unitron was like a year after Spyrius, and Roboforce was a set of four mecha in summer '96. I have all four of the latter, in various states of disrepair. They were released in America, at least, but I don't know about the rest of the world.
