View Full Version : E6 Guide to Magic Items

This thread is about collecting a list of all magic items that can be created by E6 characters.

There are two primary readings of the printed text regarding item creation, and the official errata for that section. As printed in the DMG, an item has to be created at the Caster Level given in it's description. The errata says the CL has to be high enough to meet the prerequisites (without saying explicitly if the listed CL is a prerequisite). Sean Reynolds, who was involved in the creation of the 3rd Edition claims that head designer Monte Cook explicitly meant for the listed CL to not be part of the prerequisites, as explained here (http://www.seankreynolds.com/rpgfiles/misc/magicitemcreation.htm).
This guide is based on this later reading and includes all items that can be created by 6th level spellcasters without outside help or making use of effects that raise caster level above the regular cap. The lists include the minimum CL at which an item can be created.

Note: The Artificer class in the Eberron Campaign Setting has a +2 bonus to caster level for the purpose of creating magical items, that is items with a CL of up to 8th in an E6 game. Items that can be crafted with a CL of 7th or 8th may later be listed on a seperate list, as it is a setting specific class. The ECS also explicitly follows the reading that the CL listed in an item description is a prerequisite. It's up to individual DMs how they want to handle it in their groups.

Just as an FYI, I believe there's a capstone feat that allows you to Forge rings. I'll go track it down, I think I still have the info somewhere.

Wondrous Rings [General]
Prerequisites: 6th Level, Craft Wondrous Item
Benefit: You treat rings as wondrous items for the purpose of meeting item creation prerequisites. You must still meet caster level requirements for any ring you create.

It bugs me that folks who take the time to develop an alternate ruleset don't bother to read the errata.

@Yora: I'm appreciating these threads.

You know...when you're basing your gaming on a system of houserules, ignoring errata is okay. Then it's just another houserule.

But it isn't clearly stated. If I'm doing alternate 3.5, I'm going to make sure that my houserules are explicit rather than assumed.

It's a really really tiny detail that I became only aware of when looking for ways to increase the Caster Level when crafting items. It's incredibly easy to miss and I don't think many people ever noticed it.

Druid's Vestments only require the Wild Shape ability -- they can be crafted in E6.

Nothing assumed about it.

DMG 215 - "the creator's caster level must be as high as the item's caster level"

MUST is a word that states a requirement.
E6 FAQ indicates that caster level requirements are in effect.
Ergo, errata nullifying those requirements which have been state to be in effect, is ruled out.

Thanks for going through this Yora. I was hoping this would be another Bunko's bargain magic items type thread, but this kind of compilation is useful as well.

Your order of operations is off. DMG has an "unclear sentence". Errata clarifies. E6 FAQ refers to the CL requirements, which are sparse post errata. I'm not saying you are wrong if you want to play it that way, but E6 refers to the whole of 3.5, not just the pre-errata documents.

Actually errata in this case doesn't clarify. What it does is override. It provides an alternate system of measure.

Full text from the DMG reads, "For other magic items, the caster level is determined by the item itself. In this case, the creator's caster level must be as high as the item's caster level (and prerequisites may effectively put a higher minimum on the creator's level)."

The DMG lists the caster level on the item itself. Ergo, by strict reading of the RAW, take Sovereign Glue.

1 - Caster Level determined by the item itself.
2 - Sovereign Glue is listed as an item with Caster Level 20.
3 - The creator's caster level must match the caster level of the item.

The preceeding text makes a specific trumps general assessment - "Potions, scrolls and wands the creator can set the caster level of an item at any number high enough to cast the stored spell and not higher than her own caster level."

Given the text, the only items that can have a variable caster level are Potions, scrolls and wands. Items like Weapons and Armor, and certain wondrous items, like a Cloak of Resistance, have specific rules text that alter this.

The errata nullifies and replaces this:

"For other magic items, the caster level is determined by the item itself. In this case, the creator's caster level must be as high as the item's caster level (and prerequisites may effectively put a higher minimum on the creator's level)."

Which leads to the sequence as described above. Simply by following the definitions of the words themselves, the errata leads to dramatically DIFFERENT results than the wording of the DMG. The language used in E6 references a system that only works based on the language inherent in the DMG, and therefore, precludes the errata, as the errata does not specify ANY caster level requirement, whereas the DMG DOES specifiy a caster level requirement.

WoTC was clarifying, but only in the sense that they took a concept that was inherently complex, and tossed it in favor of an easier to manage concept. But if you follow the wording of both the DMG and the Errata specifically and to the letter, you arrive at completely different results.

You're aware of how unbalancing a Periapt of Wisdom +6 will be for a party fighting at ECL 6 right? Disagree if you want, but the core assumptions of E6 assume extremely limited access to the magic item christmas tree.

A Midgard Dwarf (Frostburn) is a CR 5 native outsider that can easily exist in any setting, including E6. Relevant ability:

Master Smith (Ex): Midgard dwarves gain Craft Magic
Arms and Armor, Craft Wondrous Item, and Forge Ring as
bonus feats. They are considered to possess the prerequisites
necessary to craft any magic item of those types, even if they
do not otherwise meet the requirements or have the ability
to cast the necessary spells.
That includes artifacts and epic items of those types. Thus any item of those types could be discovered in the course of an E6 game, even if nobody has ever gone above 6th level.

Dragons could age well beyond anything a PC is capable of, they get much higher spellcasting ability than 6th and can take item creation feats.

Powerful outsiders with spell-like abilities have caster levels, which could qualify them for item creation feats such as Craft Rod and Craft Staff. They could use their spell-like abilities to create items with higher level spells than what a PC would ever be able to cast.

Lammasu, Nagas, and various other monsters are capable of spellcasting higher than 6th level as racial traits, and retain this ability in E6. They too could create magic items more powerful than what a PC would be capable of crafting.

Incantations (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/magic/incantations.htm) can be used by E6 characters to emulate spells of any level, and thus a group of individuals could make a combined effort to create pretty much any magic item in the game, even those requiring 9th level spells.

Druid's Vestments only require the Wild Shape ability -- they can be crafted in E6.
Indeed, mistook the or for a comma.

Your cursed item list is labeled "magic weapons" btw.
I noticed. Still thank you.:smallwink:

Regarding the viability of this whole thing by RAW.

The critical sentence reads "the creator's caster level must be as high as the items caster level". Which is a different way of saying "You can not create an item at a caster level that is higher than your own caster level."
It does not say, that the caster level listed with an item is also the minimum caster level the item can be created with.
The errata says "For other magic items, the caster level is determined by the creator. The minimum caster level is that which is needed to meet the prerequisites given." Again, this does not mention if the listed CL is part of the prerequsites or not.

The shema for magic item descriptions is always the same:
Aura type ; CL ; prerequsite feat, prerequsite spell, prerequisite spell ; price.
The semicolon clearly seperates the CL from the requirements. If you replace the semicolons with a line break you get:
Aura type
CL
prerequsite feat, prerequsite spell, prerequisite spell
price

Yes, my entire argumentation is based emphasizing that one tiny dot of the semicolon. If it were a comma, it would all break apart and I'd be completely convinced, that the listed CL is part of the prerequsites. If a DM does not share my reading, I won't argue about it, but I'm 100% certain about my case.

Regarding balance, I also use an item price cap in my own games. As you can create magic weapons with the price of a +4 weapon at caster level 6th, I use that value (32,000 gp + material component) as the limit for items that exist in my campaigns. Which excludes quite a number of items on that list.

Addition: I just learned that in the Magic Item compendium, the caster level for an item is located at a completely different location than the prerequisites. Caster level is mentioned right at the top of an items description while under the flavor text and explaination, there's a special paragraph titled "Prerequisites" that does not list any CL.

Yes. There are more than enough creatures that would be able to craft almost all magic items ever been written. However, I decided to leave them out when compiling these lists and limit it to those items that can be crafted by wiatard 6, cleric 6 and druid 6 characters. If the DM introduces new classes and feats that allow for 6th level characters to craft additional items, I consider those house rules that vary between every group. The items listed here are those available to groups that only use the core rules, plus the book the item appears in. The items on those lists are available in any group, regardless of which additional sources are used. If someone wants to write an appendix of items that can be created at character level 6th by using feats and special abilities from splatbooks, I'll be happy to add them to the lists.

Also: I added XPH items.

I was going through all books regarding magic items again, and as it turns out, the variable caster level set by the creator only applies to scrolls, potions, and wands. There's a line that explicitly says that the listed CL for other items is set and a prerequisite.
This makes the lists of this thread a variant rule to allow for the creation of higher level items in an E6 game.

Therefore, I'll revise the lists and split them into a standard list of items that are available by RAW, and a second list of items using the variant rule. This also means I'm going hunting for ways to create items at a CL hier than your own. :smallwink:

There's a line that explicitly says that the listed CL for other items is set and a prerequisite.

Where is this line? It is of note that most of the items in the MIC don't have a CL listed (as a prerequisite or otherwise).

p. 215, left colum, very last paragraph:

For potions, scrolls, and wands, the creator can set the caster level of an item at any number high enough to cast the stored spell and not higher than her own caster level. For other magic items, the caster level is determined by the item itself. In this case the creators caster level must be as high as the items caster level (and prerequisites may effectively put a higher minimum on the creators level).

While RAW is a bit shakey, I think the intention of that paragraph is quite clear.

But now, I found a site that claims to quote Sean Reynolds:
"For other magic items, the caster level is determined by the item itself. In this case, the creator's caster level must be as high as the item's caster level (and prerequisites may effectively put a higher minimum on the creator's level)." The caster level is NOT a prereq and was never intended as one. We can sort of salvage that quoted text by changing the last sentence to: "In this case, the creator's caster level must be as high as the item's MINIMUM caster level (and prerequisites may effectively put a higher minimum on the creator's level)." So the minimum caster level of an item that makes a fireball would be 5, since that's the minimum caster level for a fireball.

Have to check that for accuracy now.

Edit: Here (http://www.enworld.org/forum/general-rpg-discussion/56402-3-5-errata-faq-not-included-confirm-deny.html#post999399)'s the original comment, it seems.

Edit: And here (http://www.seankreynolds.com/rpgfiles/misc/magicitemcreation.htm)'s the mentioned "semi-official" statement. Which leaves you at deciding if you want to follow creators statement or publishers errata file.

You don't list a cost for the Gloves of Titan's Grip, though you have a note about it.

Also, should you have access to it, the MIC updated a good many of the XPH items price-wise, so you may want to check with that. Things that immediately come to mind is that Parrying is now a +1 weapon special ability.

I got a chance to look at the MIC.

And that book is terrifying! :smalleek:
That's so much stuff that has all to be typed down by hand while flipping through the pages. If anyone wants to volunteer, even for just a single item type, I'll have any contributions you can make.

Added Drow of the Underdark items.

[Azazer's Notes]
Bone Ring uses a spell from 3.0 for some reason...and the errata doesn't correct it.
Chasubles of Fell Power can be made via Multi-classing at an earlier level (predictably 4), but I wasn't certain if I was to count that or not.
Artificer's Monocle is weird.

This guide is based on this later reading and includes all items that can be created by 6th level spellcasters without outside help or making use of effects that raise caster level above the regular cap. The lists include the minimum CL at which an item can be created.

Well, let's consider CL boosters for a moment, shall we?

Artificer = CL 8. Note that as multiple people can cooperate on a single item, there's little reason not to work together on this.
Arcane Thesis gives you a +2 for purposes of a spell(Presumably minimum CL applies to the spell being cast as a prerequisite for the item. Presumably.)
Pick your favorite reserve feats. You can generally stack two of them, for another +2 CL, but exact possibilities depend on spell.
This gets us to a possible +12, enough for Craft Magic Tattoo to give us another +1(13).
Agony or Ambrosia(as per alignment) is a nice, cheap way to get another +2(15).
Hitting the magic 12 is also enough to make an orange ioun stone for a flat +1 across the board(16).
We can whip ourselves up an Ankh of Ascension now to further boost our CL at the cost of spells. +4(20)

That should do it to create any non-epic item. That and a giant pile of gold. There are other ways as well, but I tended to select for CL boosts that apply across the board, to reduce the amount of annoying effort needed to make multiple items. Certainly, it wouldn't be hard for a focused item creator to make anything for which the prerequisite spell was available.

I actualy like the flavor of that. It's not imposible to make artifacts in E6, it just takes a master craftsman and the resorces of several adventureing parties to gather the needed magical resorces + all the gold of a large kingdom.

Most of those bonuses only grant Cl boosts to one spell or a subset of spells, limiting your options greatly.

All this for a +5 longsword.

This is pretty much what it comes out to in actual play...I GMed a long running E6 campaign that allowed all sorts of interesting RAW abuses, such as the creative ways of gaining access to spells above 3rd level.

It was possible...but sufficiently hard that it didn't pose a threat to actual gameplay. After all, gold is still a pretty limiting factor when a CR 12 fight is on the brutal end of the spectrum.

Arcane thesis raises the caster level of a spell you can already cast. It does not grant you access to spells of a higher level, which is really the only thing that matters here.

Reserve feats only make sells you can already cast more powerful, so it's the same thing.

Just because you have a CL of 12th for one single spell does not allow you to craft +4 weapons and armor. I'm pretty sure you need a general CL of 12th for that.

It's really not specified...hence the presumably. However, the errata does support this reading. Sure, you want to prioritize boosts that boost everything, since it's ever so much more useful, but things like reserve feats apply to all fire spells. In particular, you want to hit CL 12, since that gives you access to other CL boosters. Consider, CMT requires CL 12 to allow the CL bonus from it...but it doesn't specify where the CL comes from. Presumably, it's the CL that it was cast at, since that's what spells typically operate from. So yes, Arcane Thesis does in fact help get you there(though CMT isn't the best of spells for Arcane Thesis normally)

Now, you still need to gain access to the original spell, yes. That's a separate requirement that can be fulfilled in a few different creative ways. Not necessarily by the same person, though. So long as you hit all the requirements for creation, there's no limit on how many people can cooperate to pull it off.

I would allow arcane thesis to boost resist energy to a caster level at which the energy resistance reaches 20, and create items with energy resistance 20. But weapons and armor do not require any spell to be cast, so the bonus to CL when casting such spells does not come to bear.

And bonuses to caster level never grant access to new spells, so it would only help to raise the enchantment bonus of weapons and armor.

If you reach CL 12 while casting CMT, CMT grants you a static CL boost. So yes, boosting a specific spell can translate to a generalized boost.

I can also splatbook trawl for other CL boosters...I'm pretty sure I could hit a flat CL 30 from level 6 if I really needed to. There's a great deal of them out there.

Note that this is only applicable when using the non-errata interpretation. Using errata, it's much less restrictive.

Okay, but if you allow such things in a campaign, you can just use the normal magic items lists, as you can create all items on them anyway. The main purpose of this thread is to get a list of items that can be created in campaigns without them.

I'm uncertain of the value then...no CL boosters at all, then? So, you don't have artificers or wild mages, or all manner of items and spells, some of which are core....it seems like a highly specific modification of E6. I can certainly see the value of "best items in E6" or the like, but it seems unusual to make a comprehensive listing of a heavily houseruled thing.

Artificers have been adressed and the Magic Item Compendium lists by Azazer already include them. Wild Mage is highly random and does not grant access to higher level spells either.

There are rules in E6 for aquireing high level items with money. They are expensive, but doable.

From a practical point though this list should be for items that are readily avalable, read makeable by a 6th level character with no serious resorce expendeture beyond the item itself. Can other items be made? Yes, without a doubt. Are they in the town market? No.

I think a practical limit should be CL6 items, with a sub catagory for CL8 items made by level 6 artificers.

Thinking of CL boosts for E6 to make any sub epic item is a neat thought experement, but should really be it's own thread, as it is a complete topic into itself, worthy of it's own discusion.

Spells, no. CL, sure. The randomness is entirely mitigated by Practiced Spellcaster. Then it's straight bonus.

I agree with Fouredged Sword, this list is for the items in E6 that are readily and easily available. Sure, an Artificer, when given enough boosters, can produce items well beyond the normal limits of E6. But that Artificer would have to be a Player or Cohort, not a casual NPC.

EDIT:
Nitpicking...
A better list of easily obtained bonuses for that CL 13:
+2 unnamed bonus from Artificer
+1 unnamed bonus from Heritage feats
+1 unnamed bonus from corresponding Cleric Domain through Domain Draught
+1 unnamed bonus from Talisman of the Twelve Moons (at night, emulating Shifter)
+1 competence bonus from feat or Robe of Arcane Might (required school)
+2 alchemical bonus from Terran Brandy (must not be Good)

The thing is, Artificers have more than a couple class features designed to help them craft items. Even a "casual NPC" artificer is going to be pretty damn good at crafting items. In fact, they don't even have to try to make items much more efficiently than a Wizard does. In general, Artificer NPCs are going to be making items. Sure, a 6th level Artificer NPC is going to be extremely rare in an E6 world, but wherever there's one, that one will be pumping out items extremely efficiently. Hell, you can have artificers go on adventures with a homunculus sitting in a bag of holding making items for him. If artificers exist in your E6 world, expect CL 8 items to be floating around. CL 8 at the very least.

Regardless of the inherent limitations presented by E6 to an Artificer, I would expect said Artificer to produce items within, at least, the 14-16 range without too much difficulty (the list I provided is usable and by mistake did not include Ambrosia or Liquid Pain). But then that doesn't address the purpose of this thread. The Artificer who is producing these items is purposefully going beyond the specified limits of the world.

EDIT:
It's a bit like taking Shape Soulmeld (Planar Ward) in any low level campaign.

I wouldn't expect the artificer to be pumping out items in the 14-16 range because that includes more-than-obvious optimization. It isn't likely that a random artificer would stumble upon a powerful CL booster. A player could be expected to do as much, but a NPC? I don't expect anything on that level. My post was specifically talking about straight classes level 6 artificers with maybe a feat spent to reduce crafting xp costs. There needs to be a line drawn and I expect that there would be at least a couple of these kinds of artificers pumping out items to make themselves rich. I don't, however, expect there to be an artificer somewhere shooting his CL through the roof and I think that's where we can draw the line at the CL of the items we expect to see floating around.

Baka Nikujaga

Thus why the lists presented should contain (or be largely restricted to) items that can be relatively available and easily obtained ("relative" since it's always a DM thing). This is why, despite an Artificer easily being able to receive a single increase in caster level, I have not listed items that are of Spell Level 5 or Caster Level 9 (and why Bags of Holding, Portable Holes, Haversacks, and Fox Holes are not available).

EDIT:
Is this some kind of issue on semantics?

Fouredged Sword

On a large scale economy one or two guys makeing a magic item as oftine as posible still won't make an apriciable amount of stuff, and that is the number we are talking about.

On top of that if you are useing items and consumables you must include those costs into the profit margin of the item. Items that decrease the times that one has the maximun caster level also decrease the time you can work on the item, and thus increase the opertunity cost of makeing it.

Cl 6 items are likely made on comand, rather than factory style. Cl 8+ items are even more likely to be made only by special order and charged out the wazzo for, if nothing else than the rarity of the crafters capable of makeing them.

I would like to start a thread about boosing caster levels in E6 and the costs involved to create a rough Gp expendeture per CL of the item made.

I think that collecting all the Cl 6 items will be useful. Cl 8 is also a clear cutoff point, as an artificer can make such items with no Cl boosters and spellcasters are likely also able to reach those levels without too much trouble.

Past that I think a Dm would have to assume all items are avalable somehow, and then you are just creating a list of all items, and there has to be one of those already on the internet somewhere.

Cieyrin
2011-06-30, 08:54 PM
Even with artificers, I hardly think anybody is making magic items factory style. Artificers have a limited pool for making stuff with and have to retain essence from other stuff so they don't have to go out and explore the world and put their new experiences into material form.

In fact, the assembly line is non-existent, even in Eberron, as there's no real concept of standardization in manufacture of even mundane things, there's a bunch of guys with the proper tools who craft orders and can be negotiated with for special orders (masterwork, special materials, etc). None of the established game worlds, at least WotC's, are anywhere near on the verge of an Industrial Revolution, with any Magic Mart or Red Wizard Enclave being either a DM convenience or an outlier to the industrial norm.

Now that you say it, yes it does. If a staff only includes 4th level spells and lower, a 6th level artificer can create them. However, he would still need the Craft Staff feat that has CL 12th as a prerequisite. Though we did waive that for rings and rods as well.

Azazaers staff list is wrong though. Staffs must have a CL of at least 8th. It's not a creator prerequisite, but a limit of the item. All staffs would be CL 8th.

Well, let's consider CL boosters for a moment, shall we?

Artificer = CL 8. Note that as multiple people can cooperate on a single item, there's little reason not to work together on this.

No problem with this.

Arcane Thesis gives you a +2 for purposes of a spell(Presumably minimum CL applies to the spell being cast as a prerequisite for the item. Presumably.)

Arcane Thesis requires the spell to be arcane... and Artificers don't do arcane (or divine either for that matter).

This is why your friendly neighbourhood Archivist can't benefit from your friendly neighbourhood Artificer pumping out streams of scrolls... the Artificer can pump out the scrolls all right, but they ain't divine, so the Archivist can't learn them.

Pick your favorite reserve feats. You can generally stack two of them, for another +2 CL, but exact possibilities depend on spell.

?!?

I'm surprised by this one. I would not have though that artificer's infusions qualify them for reserve magic feats. Feel free to convince me otherwise.

(Please! We have an artificer in our low level party who despairs of ever making a contribution in combat other than burning action points for bane (but even after doing that he still _feels_ like a spectator))

From Complete Mage, the bonuses to CL from Reserve Feats, organized by bonus to CL, and restricted to those available in E6:

abjuration magic disruption
acid acidic splatter
air hurricane breath
air wind guided arrows
cold winter's blast
darkness shadow veil
divination magic sensitive
earth clutch of earth
electricity storm bolt
enchantment touch of distraction
fire fiery burst
force blade of force
force invisible needle
glamer face-changer
light sunlight eyes
necromancy sickening grasp
sonic clap of thunder
summoning dimensional reach
water aquatic breath

hmmm... harder than it looks, only force and air qualify

This gets us to a possible +12, enough for Craft Magic Tattoo to give us another +1(13).
...
Hitting the magic 12 is also enough to make an orange ioun stone for a flat +1 across the board(16).

Looks like hitting 12 is where it starts getting easier, but if it turns out that Artificer doesn't combo with arcane thesis and/or reserve feats, then you are still short.

Agony or Ambrosia(as per alignment) is a nice, cheap way to get another +2(15).

Source? My bing-fu didn't find where these are from. Ah, google has the answers... Book of evil deeds and so forth. Adds +2 CL to a _spell_. Interesting. Explicitly not stackable though, but if we accept it working it does reduce the ceiling to reach the breakpoint down to 10...

We can whip ourselves up an Ankh of Ascension now to further boost our CL at the cost of spells. +4(20)

Only works on Divine spell slots, so therefore fundamentally incompatible with the Artificer... not to mention Arcane Thesis... (etc).

The Ankh (and Arcanist's gloves) effect lasts until the beginning of your next turn, so it isn't clear to me that they work with crafting items.

You _might_ be able to combo short duration peaks in CL with the crafting homunculus though...?

... and as far as fluff for the Big Bad Evil Guy in an E6 campaign goes, using Consumptive Field to power the crafting of powerful magic items through human(oid) sacrifice? Doesn't get much eviler than that!

Baka Nikujaga

I think these...might help? Theoretically of course.
Level 1: Craft (or maybe purchase) poisons and run around shooting people. If there is time available, a few spell scrolls of Magecraft then maybe Armor Enhancement, Lesser (probably Bane Blind), Spell Storing, and Weapon Augmentation, Personal for the Artificer spells. There are probably better spells out there though (but Magecraft is by far the most useful).

Level 2: Crafting becomes a bit easier (especially with the addition of Circumstance bonuses) and poison may well become a very close friend. Threaten to shoot the Divine Caster with Blasphemix if no time to craft items is given.

Level 3: Craft Wondrous Item becomes available and opens a way to fighting without accidently being poisoned. To begin with craft a Quill of Scribing (or as many as necessary) and maybe a few Bag of [X] items to help in combat (though one bag only equates to three rounds of aid). After that prioritize on items that cause penalties such as Dust of Sneezing and Choking. Singing Bowls can be crafted if enemy casters are a problem. Poisons also become significantly easier to craft, store, and use. I think Pixie Dust becomes available now as well.

Level 4: Homunculi become available now (and a bunch of ways to exploit them). If you feel like making or otherwise obtaining a cursed magic item, stick a Flask of Curses on either an Expeditious Messenger or Furtive Filcher (depending on the circumstances) and have them open it (alternatively have the little cretin use a Singing Bowl while hidden near enemy casters).

Level 5: Pre-Poisoned Magic Weapons are now available and more importantly so is Assassin (weapon bonus). Find a way (as inexpensive as possible) to obtain Minor Creation and another to boost Craft (Poison Making). You can now customize the Arbalester to poison things as well (without making checks).

Here's a method for CL Increases...All of Which a Level 6 Artificer Can Make:
Name|CL Bonus| Information | Price |Source
Agony (Liquid Pain) | CL +2 | Obtain From Diseased Individual in Return for Remove Disease | 200 gp | BoVD
Terran Brandy | CL +2 | Alchemical Bonus - Obtained from Some Fey | 500 gp | BoVD
Domain Draught | CL +1 | Dependent on Domain | 3,300 gp | MiC
Talisman of the Twelve Moons | CL +1 | Outdoors at Night, Increases to +2 When in Animal Form via Wild Shape (Must be Emulating a Shifter) | 4,500 gp | RoE
Robe of Arcane Might | CL +1 | Competence - One School | 21,000 gp | MiC

*I just think that Ambrosia is way too restrictive.

This is all coming together very nicely. I wonder how we could best compile it into a single file that is easy to use as a reference.

Edit the first post to compile the list, and then ask a Mod for a sticky to keep this thread as a easy reference for all players.

What a pain...

Well, we don't necessarily have to create the document there, just use it as a host. We can create it as a PDF and just upload to Google Docs and it shouldn't mess with it at all. That's what the Penny Dreadfuls are doing with Legend and it seems to be a good medium for uniform access.

Oh, really? That's great! Then all we need to find is someone willing to compile all of our compiled information...

Speaking of compiled information...I would like to vote that we work on the Complete series for the next few entries. Unlike the other books, some of which can be situational, these will most likely be open to players.

Worcing on CAd right now.

I just noticed a mistake I made.

I don't know if you did it as well Azazer, but I always listed the minimum caster level. However, what we really want is the minium creator level and that's 3rd for Wondrous Items and 5th for Weapons and Armor.
Since this list is about indicating which items can be created by E6 characters at what level, I think creator level is the relevant information. I suggest we raise all items to the level required to get the item creation feats. There are also items that say "Creator must be level x", in that case this special prerequisite should also be considered for the listed minimum creator level.
I'm also thinking about adding a 4th column "Special requirements" like "creator must be an elf" or skill ranks or feats. Though this would mean to go through all items again and we'd quite likely miss a lot in just one go.

I know the generalization on item creation is that the individual with the feat must be the provider of all the spells, but to be perfectly honest I had been working under this assumption:

It is possible for more than one character to cooperate in the creation of an item, with each participant providing one or more of the prerequisites. In some cases, cooperation may even be necessary, such as if one character knows some of the spells necessary to create an item and another character knows the rest.

If two or more characters cooperate to create an item, they must agree among themselves who will be considered the creator for the purposes of determinations where the creator's level must be known. (It's generally sensible, although not mandatory, for the highest-level character involved to be considered the creator.) The character designated as the creator pays the XP required to make the item.

When taking into consideration that E6 is a low-level game, and that characters (both player and not) will not have access to particular Domains, spell lists, or other requirements, this specification on item creation seemed to be the most compelling and probably the one most likely used.

EDIT:
Apologies, I forgot to reply to this.

I'm also thinking about adding a 4th column "Special requirements" like "creator must be an elf" or skill ranks or feats. Though this would mean to go through all items again and we'd quite likely miss a lot in just one go.
If you believe that this is necessary then it shouldn't be too difficult. But I believe that most of the items covered here don't provide enough information regarding the item's capabilities and as such would require the reader of this list to refer back to the original material the item in question is contained in.

Yora
2011-07-03, 04:30 AM
Which was the reason I didn't include special requirements right from the start. When there is likely cooperation on most magic items because not everyone (especially arcane casters) can cast all the spells, people have to check if they need a partner anyway. This does make a special requirements colum quite unneccessary.

Wait, when the first reply was not about special requirements, what was it about then?
An item has one creator and additional assistants. The creator has to have the feat, so the feat is the absolute minimum for an item.

Baka Nikujaga
2011-07-03, 04:44 AM
Because the possessor of the feat might not necessarily be an individual who can personally cast spells (or even possesses a caster level). As an example Astaroth allows a Binder to choose an item creation feat so long as said Binder's effective Binder level is at least equal to the minimum caster level necessary to take the feat. Because of how the rules work it is debatable as to whether or not the Binder can provide an actual caster level as Astaroth does not explicitly provide one.

Yora
2011-07-03, 04:54 AM
In that case, you can take Craft Magic Arms and Armor only as a Binder 5, and Craft Wondrous Items as a Binder 3 as well. But you need to have at least a 3rd or 5th level character as the primary creator.

If player A has Craft Wondrous items and player B provides a 1st level spell, player A has to be at least 3rd level and player B 1st
If player B provides a 3rd level spell, A has to be at least 3rd level and B at least 5th level.

In either case, the minimum level for the feat, is the minimum that at least one of the crafting characters has to have. If 3rd or 4th level spells are involved, at least one character has to be 5th level or a 6th level artificer, even if he does not have the item creation feat.
I'd say we list the level required for the most dificult prerequisite.

Baka Nikujaga

http://i56.tinypic.com/2u3vec8.jpg
Ah, alright, then. So it isn't necessarily the caster level that we're providing, but the minimum character level necessary to make the item.

Yora
2011-07-03, 06:17 AM
Yes, I noticed that there are numerous items with a listed CL lower than the minimum level to cast the spells. Then you also have items with higher CLs than the prerequisite feats and spells, items with a special creator level requirement, and so on, I think we should list all items the same way.
Listing them at the level at which a single character can have all the feats, spells, and special prereqisites seems to be the best solution. When you split the work with other characters, at least one of them has to match that level.

One special case that remains are items that require "the creator must have 5 ranks in Skill". I think "creator" is always refering to the character who pays the XP cost and provides the item creation skill. To get 5 ranks in Jump as a wizard, to create Boots of Striding and Springing, one would have to be a wizard 3/fighter 1, to get the ranks and the Craft Wondrous Item feat.
Option A: List the item as creator level 4, because you have to be a 4th level character to create it.
Option B: List the item as creator level 3, because you have to be a 3rd level spellcaster to create them.

I think I would prefer Option B. If there are any items that require a caster level of 6th, but also require multiclassing, we would not include them in the lists (or reserve it for artificers), but I don't think there are actually any.

Just went through the Reserve Feats; none of them give you +casting level for Craft Magic Tattoo, and their bonuses are all competence, which means they aren't stacking.

Create Magic Tattoo isn't typed; are the others?
Also, if using Reserve Feats, you're going to need a Reserve Feat for whatever particular spell it is you're casting. There aren't any ways to get bonuses to general transmutation or conjuration spells, unless they're also [water] or [fire] or what have you.

Just went through the Reserve Feats; none of them give you +casting level for Craft Magic Tattoo, and their bonuses are all competence, which means they aren't stacking.

Actually, if you read the general description of Reserve feats at the beginning of the Feat section, they explicitly say that they do stack with each other. Case in point:

A spellcaster can key two or more reserve feats off a single spell. For example, if a wizard had the Sickening Grasp and Winter's Blast feats, she could use both primary benefits of those feats if she had a single 3rd level (or higher) necromancy cold spell prepared and not yet cast. The secondary boosts likewise stack; a spellcaster who has the Aquatic Breath and Drowning Glance feats gains a +2 competence bonus when casting water spells.

Emphasis mine.

The point is, that magic item creation does not care at all for caster level. If you have an item that has only a single spell effect, and that effect is variable by Caster Level, such as a scroll, potion, or wand, then yes, Reserve Feats and such allow you to create items with a CL greater than 6th. You could for example create a CL 7th wand of fireballs that casts fireballs that deal 7d6 points of damage, if you have a reserve feat that provides a +1 bonus to CL for fire spells.

However, you would not be able to create a wand of ice storm at 7th level, as ice storm is a 4th level spell, and 6th level characters don't have 4th level slots.

For magic weapon, armor, rings, wondrous items, and rods, caster level is irrelevant. If you're a 5th level spellcaster with the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat, you can have a 3rd level druid cast flame blade at CL 3rd for you to create a flaming weapon.

I assume most of the CL increases that have been mentioned actually work. They just don't have anything to do with this thread.

I believe faceroll's point was that none of the Reserve feat bonuses can actually be applied to Create Magic Tattoo's particular type: Conjuration (Creation). You would have to utilize some other method of caster level increase should you desire the bonus the spell provides (while keeping in mind the Artificer bonus does not apply).

I think I would prefer Option B. If there are any items that require a caster level of 6th, but also require multiclassing, we would not include them in the lists (or reserve it for artificers), but I don't think there are actually any.

http://i54.tinypic.com/200whs1.jpg
In most cases multiclassing would probably be needed because of rare Domain spells, but you could just substitute a straight Archivist for this. It's too bad that the Archivist can't grant us access to higher leveled Ranger or Paladin spells though...

There are two domains Craft and Creation, which give a +1 CL to Conjuration(Creation) spells.

That's what Planar Touchstone(Catalogues of Enlightenment) is for. You get the base benefit without having to go there, strange as that sounds, so we can just pick up the CL boost that way.

I didn't claim they were. Tyndmyr offered some off the cuff suggestions for getting a higher CL, and some of them have been nitpicked away. For the cost of 2 feats (the same cost as the erroneously mentioned reserve feats) you can have the +2 (untyped) CL bump from those domains.

Except that Arcane Disciple doesn't give any of the benefits of the actual Cleric Domain, only the spells granted by it.

EDIT:
I think it might be best if we make a thread on what CL bonuses are available in E6...

It costs 250 gp. I assume something like that would be available in a large city. Remember, characters are capped at 6th level, but outsiders still exist and can bring trade goods.

Not to be a party pooper, but most of the discussion in this thread revolves around debates which creative uses of non-core feats and help by non-humanoid beings would theoretically allow for the creation of more powerful magic items in a game that limits Player Characters to 6th level.

Azazer and I have created the lists that are up based on Core Only only rules with the E6 Craft Wondrous Ring feat, without assistance by outside agencies, artifacts, and magical locations that might exist in a game or not. We've made concessions for Artificers which have a universal bonus to crafting items of any kind and are based around creating items, but I think we should really keep this list down to those items that can be created by player characters in every E6 game that uses the book in which the item appears.
That's what we did so far and what I intend to continue to do.

Many of the suggested ways to raise CL and whatever probably work, and if you want to, you're welcome to write your own appendices that include the items which can be created under the circumstances you specified. You can even add them to this thread, if you want to.
But I think we really don't need any more debate about what feat or optional rule works and which not.
When you're interested in discussing ways to create more powerful magic items, I think a seperate thread would be the most practical way to do that.

So would using most of these resources, ultimately.

But anyways, Yora is right, we're getting a bit off topic with all this CL boosting talk.

For ToB's weapon special abilities, neither lists a CL, though I assume it's E6 friendly since the magic aura is Faint for both, which is CL 1-5. Neither requires spells, just feat and maneuver knowledge, which doesn't help the matter. I guess they're probably CL 5, with the required creation feat. Speaking of, I corrected CLs up to the required for the creation feat.

A final note is that matter of updated material, as the MIC updates a lot material from the first set of Completes, Arms and Equipment, ECS, XPH and a couple other sources I'm probably forgetting, so we're probably gonna need to go through and remove duplicates at some point.

Can Artificers create psionic items? As by the ECS they don't, but if there's a class variant or ACF it would be very easy to implement.

The Psionic Artificer variant from Magic of Eberron. But...it's a bit of a sketchy variant. Due to the existence of the Spell to Power Erudite (or through other means) the Psionic Artificer can make any magic item it wants as well.

By my count, we're missing Complete Arcane, Complete Divine, Magic of Eberron, Magic of Incarnum and Races of Eberron. We could also have the other Races books, the other Eberron books (Forge of War, Secrets of Sarlona, Secrets of Xendrik, Faiths of Eberron, Dragonmarked, Explorer's Handbook, Player's Guide to Eberron, etc.) and then there's DMG 2, Draconomicon, Dragon Magic, Libris Mortis, Planar Handbook, Manual of the Planes and so many more. We aren't lacking for sources right now, if we really want to go that far.

Yora
2011-07-05, 11:20 AM
There's a lot of books that are not yet listed, but many have just two or three items, in which case I don't think it's worthwhile to give them the treatment.

DMG, XPH, MIC, and the Completes are the most important ones. A&EG and Magic of Eberron also have large numbers of items, but I think most other books are not neccessary.

I think Yora just wants Arcane, Divine and Magic of Eberron, though I'm fairly sure Races of Eberron has a sizable number as well. All the others I listed s/he doesn't want to deal with at this time. I got no problem with that, as this is a fairly good start, though as Fouredged Sword pointed out, page numbers would probably be good if we're going to use this for reference.

Hmm...I think we might want to include some of the Forgotten Realm's books then; because even if I don't necessarily like the fluff, they tend to have a fairly high density in regards to magic items.

However, I dislike the page number suggestion, mostly because I'd have to go through at least seven books.

Aww...it's red now.

Sorry, that's the color Yora was running with. When we get it cleaned up for the PDF, we can change to Blue if you think it'd look better. Plus, that's the color Word '07 seems to like, too, if I'm the one who'll be doing the reformatting for the PDF.

It may be worth it if we are going to make a compiled list of all the books with page refrences. That would be the most helpful for players and DM's later down the line.

You're always welcome to add any books we havn't done yet.

I've started with putting all lists into a spreadsheet, which will later make it a lot easier to change the formating and editing for a pdf release. But keep your work comming in this thread as usual.

I'm sorry to resurrect a thread that's been inactive for so long but I wanted to point out a few things I've found regarding caster level of item creation. These are what I've pointed out to my DM but he's still deciding if he's going to allow it.

DMG pg 215. I've highlighted the portion that points out what constitutes the prerequisites of an item. I've also highlighted the section that allows for the XP component to be pulled from other characters.

Prerequisites: Certain requirements must be met in order for a character to create a magic item. These include feats, spells, and miscellaneous requirements such as level, alignment, and race or kind. The prerequisites for creation of an item are given immediately following the item’s caster level.

A spell prerequisite may be provided by a character who has prepared the spell (or who knows the spell, in the case of a sorcerer or bard), or through the use of a spell completion or spell trigger magic item or a spell-like ability that produces the desired spell effect. For each day that passes in the creation process, the creator must expend one spell completion item (such as a scroll) or one charge from a spell trigger item (such as a wand), if either of those objects is used to supply a prerequisite.

It is possible for more than one character to cooperate in the creation of an item, with each participant providing one or more of the prerequisites. In some cases, cooperation may even be necessary, such as if one character knows some of the spells necessary to create an item and another character knows the rest.

If two or more characters cooperate to create an item, they must agree among themselves who will be considered the creator for the purpose of determinations where the creator’s level must be known. (It’s generally sensible, although not mandatory, for the highest-level character involved to be considered the creator.) The character designated as the creator pays the XP required to make the item.

Typically, a list of prerequisites includes one feat and one or more spells (or some other requirement in addition to the feat). When two spells at the end of a list are separated by “or,” one of those spells is required in addition to every other spell mentioned prior to the last two. For example, the prerequisites for a ring of three wishes are “Forge Ring, wish or miracle,” meaning that either wish or miracle is required as well as the Forge Ring feat.

So for the following magic item the prerequisites are listed in bold.

Circlet of Persuasion
This silver headband grants a +3 competence bonus on the wearer’s Charisma-based checks. Faint transmutation; CL 5th; Craft Wondrous Item, eagle’s splendor; Price 4,500 gp.

Items have to be made with a minimum caster level of their required spells, so the Circlet of Persuasion could be made with a CL 3 but it would be easier to dispel. The Caster Level of the item sets the following.

Caster Level: The next item in a notational entry gives the caster level of the item, indicating its relative power (just as a spell’s caster level measures its power). The caster level determines the item’s saving throw bonus, as well as range or other level-dependent aspects of the powers of the item (if variable). It also determines the level that must be contended with should the item come under the effect of a dispel magic spell or similar situation. This information is given in the form “CL x,” where “CL” is an abbreviation for caster level and “x” is an ordinal number representing the caster level itself.

Thread Necromancy
Bringing a thread back from "the dead." If a thread hasn't been posted in within the last six weeks, don't reply to it. Start a new topic, if you want to discuss the subject (you are welcome to link to the old thread). If you think it would be better to resurrect an old thread, PM a moderator for that subforum and wait for approval. The original poster of a creation in Homebrew (and only that poster) may revive a creation beyond the six-week threshold without prior Moderator approval.
