Tell me about the Withdraw action

What I need to know specifically is this:

When you withdraw your medium character from melee with a gargantuan creature, do you just avoid attacks of opportunity from the first square?

Correct. The Withdraw action is not very useful against enemies with a large melee reach for this very reason.

Yup.


If, during the process of withdrawing, you move out of a threatened square (other than the one you started in), enemies get attacks of opportunity as normal.

So withdraw only really helps if you are right on the edge of your opponent's reach.
