Aldhaven City Streets

One of the main thoroughfares of Aldhaven is Mastiff's Road. It is currently filled with all manner of people, though few seem to stand out to you. The Plaza, arguably the center of the city, sits near right in the center of the flow of life through the city, where Midtown meets Old Town. To the north is Old Town and the Nobles' Quarter; to the south and east is The Market. Guildsman District, to the northwest, is where most of the hard work of the city is done; to the west is the Temple District and Mages' Quarter. Far to the north, on the other side of the river, is The Docks and a clustering of housing for the poor which can be described only as Slums.

Here you stand in the heart of the city, watching people come and go, functioning as the very lifeblood of the city. The most prominent building in the area is a three-story inn named The Sad Flint. It is known as the place to be for relaxing adventurers and those seeking a good story, a good drink, or a good night's rest. Across the Plaza from The Sad Flint is Ezekiel's Supplies, one of two major suppliers of adventuring and exploration gear in the city. Numerous other shops line the sides of The Plaza, including a music shop named The Howling Song, Jim Alter's Gem Jewelry, Erbauer's Enchanted Devices and Dynamos (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11154253#post11154253), Sunderham's Imports, and numerous others.

The center is kept mostly clear of vendors. The few legal locations for mobile stalls are fiercely fought over by small vendors, each jockeying for position and claiming the best prices in town. In the center of it all is a large fountain, topped by a statue of King Alben Rosen, fair and just ruler of Aldhaven, who now lies sick and dying... or so the rumors go.

There is a pair of bored-looking city guards near the fountain lazily keeping an eye on the goings-on within the plaza. They are there to keep the peace, which seems rather quiet right now, although a fair amount of traffic exists.

Sjach's eyes scan the crowd of people carefully as he slowly makes his way towards the inn. On his way he hears the town crier going through his list of news, Sjach smiles to himself as he hears about the noble daughter's missing cat.

"I might as well start with something easy while I get my bearings." He thinks to himself.

He decides to seek more information regarding the missing cat.

A slender human female stands at the entrance to the town square marveling at the amount of traffic in front of her. Dressed in what seemed to be a typical adventurer's outfit she looked for the most part unassuming except for the fact that she was quite beautiful in comparison to some of the other females running around. Long brown hair fell over her shoulders and her deep blue eyes darted around as if trying to take in the entire scene at once, though it seemed an impossible task.

"I wonder just what all these people are up to, they seem so busy."she thinks to herself.

Looking around she notices some postings around the square and glances over them.

"Hmm seems to be a lot of job offerings. Let's see.. A missing cat, ancient ruins, assassinations... Oh, rumors of an evil cult. Some of these sound quite dangerous indeed."

Noticing the two guards standing at the fountain and looking quite bored, she walks up to them and smiles.

"Hello gentlemen, if it's not too much trouble do you think you could give me just a minute of your time? I was reading through the job postings and it seems there have been quite a few missing people cases in Old Town. Would you happen to know anything about that? I'm curious what kind of people have been reported missing.. Old, young, female, etc.."

btw, folks, if you don't like the sound of any of the town crier postings, there are a thousand and one other plots waiting to be written. Feel free to explore the city a bit to find what you're looking for.

it's nice to wait until I tell you what's going on before you assume such things and react to them.

The interior of the Sad Flint is quite crowded. People are coming and going all over the rather large barroom. Patrons of any possible description abound, most content to drink the beers in their hands. No one bothers to turn their head when yet another patron walks in. The atmosphere of the place is slightly dingy, but comfortable.

A lone half-giant is serving as the bartender at the long bar across from the entrance. Round tables with an average of four chairs each litter the common area, although several have borrowed chairs from others nearby. More than half of them seem occupied by patrons of some description and number. A pair of armored bouncers guard a double door along the west wall.

Barmaids of many different races weave in and out of the traffic, delivering food and drinks, as well as picking up empty crockery and more than a few pick-up lines.

The palanquin was elegant but simple. It entered the plaza carried by the four porters and was escorted by three armed guards.

As it approached the center a slender female hand rapped and the four men stopped next to the fountain.

A young man, dressed in fine yet plain clothes, opened the palanquin's door and offered his hand up as two ladies exited.

The first was a middle aged woman dressed in greys and whites and she scanned around for a few moments before nodding.

Then the second lady exited. She was as stunningly diffrent from the two people in front of her as it could be imagined. Dressed in rich silk fabrics combined with expensive jewelery she almost gleamed in the mid-day light.

But it was not her clothes or her posture that were the most impressive. The Dragonborn socialite looked around and her inner radiance was visible to all. She was not perhaps the most powerfully built nor was she most imposing figure, as her original race was more elegant than that, but her look could cut mountains. She was unarmed and almost unarmored, and she smiled to all that met her gaze.

"So this is the infamous Plaza?" she inquired as she took in the details her gaze stopping at the statue. If the rumors were true then very soon this statue would be replaced as the new ruler took his spot.

"Yes m'lady" murmured her valet as he also looked around.

"Splendid. It has character and life. I still wonder to this day why Father chose to stay in that backwater village town. Its almost insulting for our stature and lineage. But enough of that. Would you be so kind as to dismiss the porters and go around find out information Brian? The same goes for you Petra. Please try to recruit a couple of runners as well. Clean ones preferably. I shall go window shopping around here and you are to find me when you are done. I will also ask around for anything interesting but please remember the important things"

The two servants nodded and moved to do as instructed.

Amberley Vail proceeded to her shopping escorted by the three guards forming a protective shield around her. As she browsed she asked questions and as they escorted her they did the same learning more about the city and its secrets.

Like before I am going the hirelings road. They wont play a huge roll (for example as soon as I find a place to live the "maid" and the "guards" will stay there and rarely be with me). Could you tell me how much a "palanquin" ride would cost? This was a one time thing for the introduction as opposed to normali hired people.

After a fruitless search for information regarding the missing cat, Sjach decides to go exploring. He starts heading towards the docks and slums hoping to find something interesting, or at least find some good hiding spots if the need for one arises.

Sjach realizes that the missing cat ad does include an address that he can visit to find out more.

The Docks are located on the other side of the river, just outside the city walls. Besides the portucullis at the wall, another gate has been constructed on an island in the middle of the river. A large fortress has been constructed there. The gates are open for now, but the city guards warn you that the gates are locked at sunset and won't be opened again until dawn.

The person whose cat is missing is a high-ranking member of the city watch.

You learn that the docks are absolutely deadly for humans to walk around in at night. They say none have lived to tell the tale. It also seems that Old Town, North Market, and South Market has had more than the usual share of thefts and petty crimes recently.

Sadly, all he can find are some cheap hostels that have a monthly option. Perhaps looking in a nicer part of town would help...

It appears that the Mages' Quarter is a popular area to hang out if you are young and rich. Several restaurants and taverns there offer exotic magical things to see while one eats.

most of the inns, boarding houses, and other such places to stay in the Mage's Quarter are either very expensive or not significantly better than in the plaza. There is one place, though, which offers a free prestidigitation each morning as part of their service. That combined with fancy but not luxurious furnishings seems to be exactly what you're after. The inn will cost 160 gold per month.

The plaza you're at is right along where Midtown and Old Town meet at its southernmost tip. North Market is nearby, and offers a variety of imported goods for sale. South Market offers things to a more domestic clientele. The Mages' Quarter seems to be full of odd activity, and the Temple district to the southwest seems to be having one religious incident after another. Most recently, rumor says that the temple to Tiamat sent five dragons out to savage some dragonborn of Bahamut who were helping a lost child find her mother.

Satisfied with the price and the location she accepts and signs the contract without haggling or such pettiness paying for the first month up front. She has her retinue move her few possessions and prepare the appartment for actually being lived in and stocking some basic provisions.

A well muscled hobgoblin rides into the square on a chestnut warhorse, beneath a large cloak a glint of chainmail is visible and he has a greatsword slung over his back. He leads a packmule carrying obvious campaign equipment. While travel stained he is well kept and groomed. As he comes into the square the hobgoblin surveys the bustle with a grin or perhaps a smirk. He gravitates towards the guards at the fountain. He address's them with a large toothy grin:

"Well then, look at you likely lads sitting on your arses with a plum job like this. Looks like the only thing your in danger of is boredom, sore feet and maybe sunburn on such a nice day as today. Tell me lads, where can a hired sword look to find gainful employment in this fair city, any mercenary captains or local lords hiring under a banner?"

In leather armor and traveling attire/gear, I (male human, dk hair, gray eyes; wearing a red bandana) walk into town and approach an area where I might find the following dive/brothel/quiet house/etc.:

Since I have been here before, but not in a few years at least, I head to whatever dive that the local noble youth would secretly go to slum it, buy/do drugs, socialize with artist types, and/or meet with whores.

A short and rather rugged looked Halfling approaches the town square followed closely by a Dog that probably weighs more than him. He seems to be wearing what looks like a saddle.

"Well Renji we're here, though a lot has certainly changed around here. I hardly recognize it."

He takes a minute to look around the area and notices some of the postings. Seemingly interested, he takes a closer look.

"There seems to be a lot going on in this city. People disappearing, assassination requests.. oh and look at that. A missing cat. I'm sure you could probably handle that one on your own eh Renji?"

The dog barks in return seeming to understand the question, though it could have simply been the mention of a cat that got his attention.

"Well I'm in no hurry, perhaps a nice pint of ale before I get too busy..."

Nash looks up at the 3 story building and notices the sign. The Sad Flint "Hmm, I think that will do just fine indeed." Nash walks to the entrance of the tavern and then speaks to the dog. "I don't think they'll allow you inside of here buddy, you'll have to stay outside but when I get back we'll get you a nice cold drink of water ok?"

The Dog whimpers but sits down and seems to obey the Halfling's request. Satisfied that the Dog will remain put he opens the tavern door and proceeds inside.

Veshna nods to the waitress, and then makes her way up to the bar. "I take it you're Joss?" She looks up at the half-giant and smiles. "I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but you're the largest bartender I've ever seen. I guess at least you can serve as your own bouncer if the need arises." she says giggling.

"I think I'll have a mead.. and hopefully even a bit of information. I'm new to this city and looking for some work and I know there is far more going on than is listed on those meager postings outside. With all of the traffic you get in here I bet you hear a lot of interesting things, perhaps even rumors.. Anything you can tell me about the city that may not be so obvious to a new comer?"

It looks around with dispassionate interest, thinking unkind thoughts about the people that must inhabit the dying hive of Aldhaven. Eventually, the figure hears of a missing pet from the town crier, and this peaks the creature's interest.

"Tell me," says the cloaked figure to the crier. "What more do you know of the nobleman's cat? It seems that I could be persuaded to search for the poor beast." The man's voice, if it is a man, seems to rumble forth from some metallic chamber inside the cloak, hollow and tinny.

"What an odd way to lay out a city... 40 light horseman and 2 angry dwarves would do the trick." he mumbles under his breath. He notices the unprofessional guards and adjusts his angry dwarf count downwards.

"A missing cat? why is this news? " He asked over his shoulder. A small bat nestled on top of his backpack poked its head up from its wings and screeched in a hopeful soft way.

"No, I don't think a bat ate the cat. Though if you want, there is a perfectly good dog abandoned over there by the Inn." Shadow answered over his shoulder. "This newly uncovered ruin sounds promising. Maybe we should check that out. First things first though"

The bat screeched again, in a way that somehow sounded non-commital.

Shadow makes his way over to the guards. The warforged waves briefly.

"Hail Fleshlings! I was wondering if you could either tell me about the significant local laws or baring that, point me in the direction of where I could get a written copy?"

Shadow looks them over briefly taking note of their equipment.

Among the sounds of the merchants, the town crier, and the people coming was the sound of loud clanking metal as an adventurer made their way towards the fountain in the center of the plaza. This person was easily identifiable as an adventurer by the fact they were armed and armored as if they were about to ride off into battle at any time. This person was very tall, standing six and a half feet at the least and wore full plate armor that covered their entire body with a helmet that hid their face.

The adventurer had a giant sword in hand as it walked, black cape attached to it's armor billowing. The sword's blade was heavy, straight, double-bladed, and five feet in length, with a foot and a half long handle that had an ornate hilt with a heart-shaped pommel. This large weapon had no sheath, and glowed with a red magical aura as the armored warrior walked with the blade it's right hand and resting over the shoulder like a halberd or similar pole-arm.

The armored adventurer stopped it's walk as it reached the fountain, helm turned upwards to the statue of King Rosen in silence. A Heavy sigh came from the the adventurer while listening to the current news and rumors of the king's failing health. The adventurer stayed in that spot in contemplative silent before moving, walking around the fountain and intending to head north.

North of the Plaza, Mastiff Road continues up through Old Town.

A young man walks into the plaza, smelling not too pleasant after days of travelling here. He looks around for some place to get a room and perhaps a bath, taking note of this talk of the royal wedding and the king's failing health.

He plans to look into this news of disappearances in Old Town and this gnomish dignitary. Gainful employment (and fun), it seems, are never far away in Aldhaven.

Gather Information: [roll0]

The disappearances in old town seem to be something the city guard has tried to cover up. Perhaps talking to the city watch post stationed Old Town would reveal more.

He hears that the Gnome dignitary is in Aldhaven to sign an important trade and defence treaty between Aldhaven and its satellite cities and the gnome kingdoms. The Kings failing health is what has caused delays and as such the treaty is not signed yet. He even hears that there was a failed attempt against the Gnome's life.

Aldhaven is full of place's to eat and drink depending on what his wallet can afford and his stomach tolerate. From cheap, tasteless beaver meat and simple food to extravagant cuisine as well.

The closest and most well known tavern to the central plaza is off course the famous and infamous at the same time Sad Flint.

North of the Plaza, Mastiff Road continues up through Old Town. The figure walks around the fountain, drawing a few glances. A guard nearby says, "Please put away your weapon unless you're trying to sell it. You're unsettling the merchants a bit."

Other than a few quick glances from those nearby making sure you aren't about to do something stupid like many adventurers before you who thought they were above the law, most people aren't really paying attention. It seems like adventurers are common in this part of the city, particularly with the Sad Flint and Ezekiel's Supplies being located here.

Gregor heads to the Sad Flint, removing and dusting his hat off as he goes.

You see a halfling enter through those doors as you enter.

Barmaids of many different races weave in and out of the traffic, delivering food and drinks, as well as picking up empty crockery and more than a few pick-up lines.

The armored adventurer came to a halt as it heard the guard, the helm that hid it's face turning down to stare at him silently for a moment. "... Oh! Right, my apologies!" As it turns out the tall adventurer in armor was a woman with a deep, husky voice.

"I don't have any kind of sheath. Wherever I put it I can never draw it fully from the scabbard." The woman explained herself before she turned her attention back to her large sword, her other hand removing the straps from her back off her shoulder, setting it on the ground, She opened the larger middle pocket of her back, her sword slowly sinking into and disappearing from sight into the much smaller back, obviously magical as well.

With that down, the armored woman headed north down Mastif Road and towards Old Town, keen on investigating the recent disappearances.

"Barman! How do you do? Can I get a pint of your house bitter and a glass of frenzywater?"

Drinks assumedly in hand, Gregor attempts to make his way to an empty table. Barring that, one with plenty of space and not too many people, in which case:

The bar man, a huge half-giant looks at you and frowns at your tone. He complies with your request though and places two large glasses infront of you and grunts

"That will be 2 gold, boy"

Luckily for you, you find an empty table almost in the middle of the room as it seems very few of the patrons choose to consiously be in the center of attention.

"Why thank you sir. Thirst and fatigue do make a man want for drink this time of day."

Gregor pays for the drinks and tips the barman a gold for good measure, as service was prompt and his demeanor so . . . colourful. With a wink he is off to sit at the center table, as leaning against the wall does not appeal to him.

While he drinks the bitter, he leaves the frenzy water alone, and plans what his next move will be. Should he scout out this dignitary or see about these disappearances? He traces on the table with his finger, a nervous habit he's had since he was young.

Sir Chivalry it doesnt really work like that in open sandbox game. You cant make an int/wis roll and ask me to decide what your character does. The game is "reactive" you tell me what you -do- I tell you what the effect is... I cannot and will not make decisions for your character... The check does so that is smart enough to make his own decisions.

He is hard pressed to receive an answer from the beyond. It seems such challenges are those that are faced among all work seeking individuals and it comes down to personal choice.

It would help if he could collect more information on both cases before making an educated decision as both ventures seem complex. The disappearances is something that the might of the City Watch has been unable to address and the Gnome dignitary is something that would take incredible tact.

During his rumor gathering he did hear that there was indeed an attempt on the Gnome's life and that it failed horribly as the retinue of the Gnome took care of it without him lifting a finger.

While contemplating all this he notices that in the shadowy corners of the Flint there are various individuals that also sit on their own and some are not even drinking but rather observing the rest of the tavern.

In general from his few hours in the city he realises that the amount of possibilities and diffrent types of employment are simply staggering... the world is an oyster waiting for him to pick it. In addition to that he had also heard when asking about the Sad Flint that many find employment in its heart though the rumors where vague about the details.

As a DM of sandbox games, I've found you have to accept that there is something we shall call momentum in games like this. Either you provide it or the players do. It is not at the moment being provided by the DMs, so I'm left to provide my own momentum. Know that waiting for players to provide their own momentum can take some time, especially when given all the information a legally blind man would know starting off.

A few questions:

Did I teleport into the square? Unless I did, I walked through at least nine or ten districts to get to a city square in a metropolis. Are you telling me none of them (these areas near the entrance of the city) are embassy districts? Knowledge (local) [roll0] (max result possible 10)

Is this city xenophobically closed off from outsiders? I can assume not, as they seem to like us adventurers, so they must have relations with the outside. Now either these embassies are placed in their own ghettoes for demi-human races, or they are grouped in at least the same ward if not district. Knowledge (local) [roll1] (max result possible 10)

And finally, can I get an answer as to where my character can take a bath and sleep. I'm not doing either of those in a place that has murdering cultists in the basement, or whatever that was before in the Sad Flint. Knowledge (local) [roll2] (max result possible 10), Gather Information for the embassy district while I'm at it [roll3] hours:[roll4]

Gregor looks at the sign posts nearby. The clever denizens of this city must have marked where important areas are, and at least this will help him find his way away from the square, with its hustle and bustle.

Depending on what the signs say, he will head for these sorts of places in this order of preference
1. Embassy district, if it exists
2. university district, or some area of assembled scholars, so he knows where to go later
3. a nice restaurant or eating hall
4. bath and sleep

The Plaza isn't a district, it's just a large, open square in Midtown with an actual name.

The DMG defines a metropolis as 25,001+ residents, which Aldhaven definitely has; however, it is certainly not as large as a modern day metropolis. By modern terms, it would probably be considered a small city. We do use the rules for a metropolis for Aldhaven, because, by the rules, it is one. Now, if your curious as to more specifics of the city's makeup, that'll require some RP or really good knowledge rolls. There are no obvious street signs to any of the embassies in the city.
Nor are there any signs pointing the way to the university; however, asking around yields a quick answer withing a few minutes, as most people know that it is located in Old Town.
There are numerous restaurants, taverns, and inns located throughout the city, though the only one in the Plaza itself is the Sad Flint.

Hmmm, nah, to risky and probably not big enough either. It's close to a good source though....

When using terms that are present in the language of the game, it is best to assume these terms are defined as defined in the rulebooks.

A district is ~500 people on average, ranging from 350 to 550. This metropolis would have ~50 districts at least, assuming it wasn't all slums and red light districts and other high density districts.

If the districts you mention are "wards", groupings of three to five districts into over-arching areas, then yes, you have nine wards, so you're at worst about one short, which is your perogative as the triumvarate DMs, and from the looks of things you've got everything you need.

That's basically what I'm trying to figure out here, as the way the city divides itself is important to my character (I'll find it out on my own as I go, just want to know you've got the info I need). Also, no embassy district. Cool. Straight answers generally help, instead of vagueness, unless there's a reason for it.

Back to the game (these are all knowledge (local)(max result 10))! Does the area around the university have anywhere to sleep [roll0], eat [roll1], and wash up [roll2]?

For the record since I am from Athens...

if you come today to Athens from the airport (or even the port) and you cross a city of 5 million and reach the center from the central roads you will find NO embassies.

You will also not find any signs pointing TO the embassies.

The American and Israeli embassies are the only two most famous Embassies because people demonstrate outside them very often but if you ask me where the German, Spanish, French and British embassy is I actually have no clue and I have lived in Athens for 25 years.

So although what you say -in theory- could be right in practice many times things are diffrent. Thats why I made it clear that you can either do a knowledge check (which represents the generic info you hear on the street) or ACTUALLY walk up to a guard and ask "hey are there any embassies around here?"

In addition to the above most dark ages/medieval/Renaissance cities did not have a street by street name. There were few major roads that were named but in reality you had more, as you point out, smaller neighborhoods or districts (for example The Shambles was a common name for a particular type of street in many English cities... as was the High Streets which were not named but rather called... High Street)

Lastly, I realise that in order to keep going you need momentum as you say... I am far to skeptical though due to the backlash and possible results and need of retcons that this may cause.

To give an example, Plans who is DMing me some times answers with one liners to avoid "forcing" me into situations... so after listening I manage to unlock a locked door. He could answer -you unlock and walk outside-.He doesnt though... he choose to simply say -you hear a satisfying click as the door is unlocked-. This means I need to make a post saying I go out but its better than the alternative of him telling me I go out, I get seen and then I tell him "by I didnt SAY I go out...".

Back to the game.

There are three taverns very close to the university that fill the criteria of food, bath and sleep.

He learns that one of them, the Fancy Pony, has a fairly bad reputation as quite a few customers have in the past complained about the fact that their possessions disappear after they enter the baths but it is widely accepted as the best of the four.

The one that has the least amount of negative comments is the Lion and the Mouse, a small two-story family run establishment that is expensive but said to have the finest honey mead in the quarter.

The most exclusive one is the Old Weavers Inn that boasts the claim that it has been around since 1192 without ever closing. The prices here are unreasonable to the extreme and it some times seen as a privilege to be actually allowed to rent a room for more than two nights in a row.

All three are no more than 10 minutes walking from each other and located fairly close to the University.

Gregor walks into the Lion and the Mouse, taking off his hat again and greeting any employee he meets

"Hello, I was wondering if I could rent a room?"

The tavern part of the inn is half-empty currently and as such quite a few of the patrons turn to look at you as you enter but return to their drinks and conversations a moment later.

The tavern is tastefully decorated with paintings on the walls and fairly rustic brewery equipment used to convey the atmosphere.

From the perspective of staff you see two currently. An older, plum woman in her late forties and a younger man that is incredibly skinny and timid and who is currently cleaning a table from spilled beer. You have the feeling that the patrons on the particular table have spilled the drink on purpose as they seem to be making fun of the young man.

At your question the woman waves you over and leans closer.

"Welcome to the Lion and the Mouse traveler!" she says with a winning smile. "Are you interested in a longer term rent or just something for tonight?" she asks as she puts a hand-written catalog that details a wide variety of food and drink in front of you.

Gregor heads off to Old Town, glad to finally have a direction.

He keeps his hands crossed under his cloak as he walks, in order to keep them warm, and hurries so as to make the most of the daylight.Districts aren't defined in the DMG; however, Cityscape has this definition:
A district might be a single neighborhood or city block, or it might encompass a large area. Districts have their own purposes or identities. Some contain similar types of buildings, such as a waterfront or shop district. Others, such as a lord’s keep or a garrison, are single buildings or complexes with large numbers of residents and staff. A district can contain as few as several dozen people, or as many as several thousand. Most average between 300 and 600 individuals. Some cities have multiple examples of the same district, but few contain every kind. As a general guideline, small cities have about twenty districts, large cities around forty, and metropolises roughly eighty.
The terms “quarter,” “neighborhood,” “ward,” “end,” and “section” might be used instead of “district.”

Aldhaven uses the larger "version" of districts. In the end, it boils down to we chose to call them "districts" rather than one of the other synonyms. Now, if you wish to continue a rules discussion, then take it to PMs rather than the IC thread.

Among the crowds bustling through the busy market streets is a rather average-looking young woman, distinguished by a shock of red hair and a yellow robe matted with the stains of long and arduous travel by foot. She had thought Vallair a busy city, Mirella reflected as she looked about, but the ducal city, however prosperous it was, wasn't a patch on the capital of the Kingdom of Aldhaven.

She stops in the center of the square, shading her eyes against the sun to look up at and admire the statue of King Rosen for a moment, then looks about at the crowds. She hears the town crier as he calls out the news of the day, and starts slightly as he calls out that the university is accepting new students. Luck, it seems, is not against her at all. She walks over, her walking stick clicking against the cobbles. "Hello," she says to him. "Might I enquire about the last story you called out, about the University? How may I reach the University from here, and do you know how long registration will be open?"

Isaac's eyebrows rise.

"Really? There's a racket for you. Okay, I guess I'll have to comp my guys for this on my own dime. They've got day jobs, after all."

He goes back to his students, helps them put the finishing touches on the banner, and then gets right to the business of putting on a show. Isaac is clearly experienced at this kind of thing- his loud, clear voice and line of practiced patter attract plenty of spectators. They begin with a brick-breaking demonstration: the first student breaks a single one with an overhand chop, failing on the first attempt and succeeding on the second. It's no great feat, but the fact that it's obviously his first attempt gives it a certain charm: the trepidation on his face as he stepped up to it and the relief and sudden pride on it when the brick finally broke bring a smattering of applause from the crowd. The second student breaks three, then Isaac sets up a stack as high as his waist and invites the crowd to tell him which brick to break. He breaks the third brick into the stack with a single palm strike to the top of the stack: then the fifth, the seventh. When some wag in the crowd shouts out "Fourth and sixth!" he grins, shifts his stance, and obligest with panache, which gets outright cheers from the growing audience. Once the brick fragments are cleared up, the next thing is a dizzying array of trips, sweeps and throws. The demonstration starts slowly with a few small foot sweeps that put the recipiant gently on their back, but slowly escalates to big hip throws, leaping suplexes, and impressive sacrifice throws that pound the victim into the floor with dull thuds. They move onto acrobatic kicks, then a short series of block-and-counterthrow techniques, finally culminating in a spectacular display of toughness in which wooden staves and paving stones are shattered over Isaac's head and limbs. It's all cleanly rehearsed and quite well-presented.

"And now we move on to the really fun part. We're a school of martial arts, not of looking impressive, and despite everything we've shown you today we aren't worth spit if we can't fight. Who among you has the courage to have a friendly match with the master of Three Treasures? Lose, and I promise you that you'll walk away with your life, limbs, and dignity intact- and a great story to tell your friends. Win, and the prize is a dagger of targath metal, a potent talisman against disease and a fine tool besides. Any takers?"

Fighting nonlethally is nice, but not required. No poison, nothing that endangers the spectators. Do you understand? Any questions?"

After a few seconds of inactivity the two opponents start circling each other and the half-orc seems to be backing away in this makeshift ring.

About the time some in the crowd are ready to start jeering Gurthang jumps forward and pretends to charge close for a punishing punch. The last moment though he leaps in the air and tries to deliver a flying kick.

The martial artist almost dodges but instead the blow glances him. Instead of actually being hit though it seems he stayed in his spot on purpose. The crowd gasps as they see the monks hands having grasped the foot that appeared to have hit him.

With a deft motion he swings his own fist and drops the half-orc on the ground. Then with a speed that is almost impossible to follow he delivers a blow on Gurthang on the solar plexus while he is still down.

The half-orc, a brute of a man, exhales heavily and falls unconsious.

Isaac waits still in ready state for a single moment and then leans over his opponent and touches the spot where he hit causing the bruising to dissappear. The half-orc gets up slowly and unsteadily eyeing the crowd and the superior martial artist.

As Isaac looks at the crows he says

"Give it up for the brave Gurthang! He was the first to challenge where no one else had dared, and there's no shame in losing to the master of the Three Treasures School of Martial Arts. Do we have another challenger?"

Perry diCarto surveyed the plaza, his blue eyes narrow as he watched the comings and goings of the city. He nodded to a watchman as he passed by, his fists clenching and relaxing as he went. He was tall and muscular, and he was certain his martial bearing was noticed by some as he walked through. Noticing the ongoing antics of a 'martial arts master', he took note of the name 'Isaac' and went on his way. He too was a martial artist, though likely of a much different variety.

His first goals were to find work, and to find a place to rest. This seemed as good a place as any to begin both.

DiCarto approached a city guardsman and smiled politely. "Guardsman, my name is diCarto. I understand that there may be work here for those inclined to assist the city watch. Would you be able to point me in the direction of the guardhouse or the local 'wanted' posting area?"

"Thank you, sir."

DiCarto wasn't entirely certain as to where the Fortress was, but he spent a few minutes looking around and found his way there. Parting the flow of humanity with his massive build, he made good time on the way to the fortress. As he went, he idly listened for any rumblings of the going ons of the city.

Upon his arrival, he met up with someone appearing to be an administrator and said, "My friend, my name is diCarto. I am here to meet with the Captain of the Watch. Could you please see me to him?"

"Well, it's about 11 now, and nightfall's at seven or so this time of year. the Fortress is clear on the other side of town from here to the northwest, but you can make it back in the city gates rather easily from there. It's on the island in the middle of the river between the Docks and the city proper. Just be careful, they lock both those gates at night and they don't care if that means they end up locking you on the bridge."

Lilith Ebonmar in her disguise as Lelia wander the city streets bored. Her daddy hadn't given her any missions lately and as such she was free to travel and do whatever she wanted. While it was never said out right, it was heavily implied that though it seemed like a break it wasn't. All this time off meant was that she was to gather information on her own and do anything that might benefit the Ebonmar family or make them money.

Lelia sighed as she looked around and listed to the town crier. Countless things were currently available, but nothing quite picked up her interest. Still, she wanted to make her daddy proud so she sighed and tried to think of what might be the best option.

On one hand the gnome assassination one seemed very interesting and profitable. But Lelia was hesitant about any job that offered that much for an assassination. Sure, it was a high level target who probably had quite a bit of protection, but it didn't take much to kill a man done correctly so there had to be a catch. Lelia smirked as she got an idea.

She knew how she could have some fun, possibly get reward money, and at the same time get some fame. As she began to make a plan she saw the listing for the missing cat. She raised an eyebrow and rolled her eyes. Once she saw which noble she laughed. "Whatever, it wouldn't hurt and it could net me some pocket money." She mumbled. In reality she also saw it would be a good chance to gather some information on the family when she returned the cat.

Satisfied with her two plans she began looking around, gathering information, and talking with a few of her contacts around the city and in the Ebonmar Infiltrators.

Wilstaff stiffens. No, no clerics. Bug-eared hacks always forcing their unreasonably narrow definition of 'sanity' onto the world around. Not for us. Besides, if I had brain damage I think I would see it. And no, no telepathy. Bennett always says that if he could read my mind, it would probably qualify as light reading. Such a wit, that one. And I don't really know yet what we do in the club, aside from fight to the death and play face paint. If I find out, I'll be the first to know.

Say, you seem to have spent more time in the city proper than us. We've been out on the outskirts, which are aptly named because they are not in. Anything interesting happening that stupidhead guards won't tell us about?

"Fair enough." He drank deeply. "As for your question, lots is happening. The Crier might be of service to you. He can tell you more than I. If you're fairly good with a weapon, there's an orange-haired man who's leading an expedition in a few days somewhere. He can be met between 5 and 7 o'clock in the evening at the Drowned Mermaid. Other than that, see the Fortress postings or the Crier. They'll have it all."

Don't get snippy, Ben. I'm trying to be profound, and that involves making broad, sweeping statements with no actual facts behind them. Not a reason to take offense.

Wilstaff swerves back to Perry.

Nah, those sound like jobs. Yesterday we needed jobs, today we've got money and a to-do list and tattoo-crazy friends and booze and a shiny new rope with which we shall strike fear into our enemies. Non-lethal? I dunno, that's not our style. Besides, Bennett is a slow healer. Hate to see him get injured from a fight for fun and then have those injuries catch up to him when we're fighting for our life against....things which make that necessary. But we will watch such a display. We overheard someone of your name was intending to engage in a duel tomorrow, and were wondering if you wished us to show up beforehand, maybe offer a little additional support for a nominal fee. So I'll wrestle him to the ground, beat him while he can't swing his sword, and then knock him unconscious and let the guards take him back to the Fortress for some good old fashioned performance evaluation from his boss."

"You'll want to check at the Fortress then. All outstanding bounties are placed there."

"Thanks."

The plain man asks for the location of the fortress and ventures to it.

While on the way back from posting a message with the Town Crier, Wilstaff strolls down Mastiff Street, looking to see if he can encounter the large individual from the night before, possibly while he is dueling.

Hawkman! Hawwwwwkmaaaan! Bennett, shout louder, he won't be able to hear you!

Perry stepped out onto Mastiff Street and went to the appointed location for his duel, stretching and warming up.

He looks around and hears the hobgoblin from the night before. "Wilstaff! How fare you, friend?"

Wilstaff addresses his mute friend.

Ha, told you that would work. You're such a pessimist, B.

He then extends his hand in greeting to Perry.

Hey there, hi there, ho there! Doing better and better all the time. I know you're busy with the police pounding and I don't want to keep you, but once you've done with him, I was hoping to see about hiring you for a quick task involving the Watch. And despite Bennett's misgivings towards you, I think you're just the man for the job.

Perry shakes the mans hand and nods. "I do like work. I also intend to go look around for treasure or whatever I can later today, too. So, here's my thinking. Tell me what you'd like me to do, and how much you'll pay me to do it. Then, you watch me win the duel in front of the citizenry. Then we figure out how to take care of your business. And after that, perhaps we can go find some nearby dungeon to explore. Thoughts?"

Wilstaff's eyes dart around, taking in the crowd nearby with a trace of nervousness. He speaks in hushed tones. Well, I don't want to go into too much detail out here. The walls have ears, as do some of the meat pies. But here's the skinny: you mentioned last night that not only do you know the Captain of the Watch, but he pays you for things. That's the kind of connection we need. Those Skulks have turned the docks into a killing zone, but with the arrangement the Watch seems to have with them, nothing is done. We just want to set up a meeting with the Captain and lay out a counterproposal for him. Initial compensation isn't much. If you get him to agree to the meeting, 100 gold. If either we or you can convince him to listen to our side of things, then my boss is willing to negotiate a payment with you of a substantially higher amount. Additionally, if we get him to see our side of things, then once we've cleared up certain pressing clan obligations, Bennett is prepared to accompany you on a job of your choosing. I will probably tag along as well. And we'll only take 25% of any treasure or reward accrued from it. What say you, Hawkman?

Perry nodded. "Okay. We need to talk in private later today. I need to know more about your employer before I try to get the Captain into bed with him... But first, I duel. Will you be attendig? And how did you feel about a random tomb crawl?"

hustlertwo

Sure, we can hang around to watch. The whole meeting thing is all we have on the ol' to-do list today. And Bennett isn't too comfy with tombs, they make it tough for him to catch his breath. Probably claustrophobia or something. But in a couple days, after certain important events have transpired...sure. It would be nice to have some muscle around. And Bennett, before you say anything, you have to actually have muscle before you qualify as muscle.

Wilstaff and Bennett wait to watch the match.

Do we do a dual thread after this, or what?

we'll resolve the combat in his thread and post a summary to the city streets. Unless you had planned on possibly interfering. If so, I'll make a teamup thread.

Wilstaff will intervene only if Perry is in imminent danger of losing and/or dying.

The duel begins in earnest, the Detective wasting no time insulting the goliath and attacking while the goliath is flatfooted.

Duel thread is up.

After having a meal for <depends on time of day> and listens to the Town Criers adventures. His ears perk up when he talks about the Drowned Mermaid. "Huh, that sounds like I might get some money for spells outta that." Looking around for somebody, Arlec tries asking people if they can direct him to the Drowning Mermaid.*

Gather information: [roll0] if it succeeds, he'll head straight there.

An otherwise nondescript man of some considerable height, whose eyes appear to glow red like those of a wolf in the lantern light, arrives in the town center and approaches the crier.

Begging your pardon sir, but I have just arrived in Aldhaven and am looking for work. I was once porter to the great house Gambhiri and would relish the opportunity to serve in that capacity again for the lords apparent of Aldhaven if they would have me. Might you be able to direct me to the appropriate authorities whit whom to inquire regarding similar employ?

On the way there...

"The Porter's Guildhouse is in the Guildsman's District, to the far northeast of town."

Thank you, sir I shall be taking my leave of you presently.

With that the tallish man bows and heads off toward the Guildsmans district. Taking stock of the storefronts, banking and drinking establishments, other Guildhouses and the like that he may pass on his way...

It isn't often one sees elven chain mail, let alone on a human. Nor has it ever been seen in the particular style the current wearer has. It is in the style of The Ruby Sorceress. What is more the person wearing it is female. Her name is Tia Malone, as most of the older merchants remember. She has come home. Not for the expected funeral of His Majesty, though she probably will perform that service, but for a much simpler reason. Her parents had died. She was now the owner of the Malone Funeral Parlor.

She stopped at the fountain to greet the gaurds.

Is everything alright. I don't remember you two. My name is Tia Malone. Can you tell me what the current tax status is on inheriting a funeral parlor?
