greetings playgrounders,

this is a thread for stories of your houserules that came back to bite you.

not how to fix them simply stories of them coming back to bite you.

here's mine

"apply dexterity to ranged attack damage rolls as you would strenght to melee"

now. how did this come back to bite me?

simple.

in my summer group I have a Tiefling Duskblade who asked if he could switch his arcane channeling to a bow instead of melee

I saw little enough problem with this, and allowed it. and then made him aware of relevant houserules. (such as the above)

he has since taken a Mighty +4 Composite Longbow.

he rolled a natural 20. so this lead to a damage of...

3d8 (longbow) + 1d6 (sonic) + str mod x3 + dex mod x3 = pain.

fun stuff.
that said, I still plan on using the houserule, I'm now simply aware of it's full ramifications.

anywho.
what houserules of yours have come back to bite you on the keester? and why?

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that math is entirely wrong.

We used to have a houserule that you could take 2 standard actions in lieu of a full round action. Went fine for a while, but when the good spells start kicking in things get crazy.

Not one I've used myself, but one I've seen floating around on the boards.

I find this amusing.

However, they get a -10 to their balance checks to walk, unless they have the "pretty woman" trait.

My group actually got a houserule relevent to that!

-women can walk in heels fine (though presumably w/ penalties to balance; it's never come up), but men have to make balance checks to move around (normally, take ten-in combat it's rough) UNLESS the heels have been enchanted to give a bonus to balance, in which case the checks are waived completely

This came up once my wizard psuedo-involuntarily became a transvestite...
