Man, you gotta love the character limits on thread titles. I had a really good one worked out for you all, too :smalltongue:

Anyway, let's get this ball of banter rolling!

Rules List
1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

14. Once you have made a Random Banter thread, you must wait 50 threads before making another one.

15. If you can avoid dibs calling on making the next thread, that will avoid people needing to wait if the thread hits 50 pages while the dibs-caller is asleep.

What? Portal 2 totally has replay value! You replay it just for the dialogue.
But yes, it would be better if longer. Also the difficulty curve is a little out of whack and you know what I wrote a whole blog post (http://ralphpocketwatch.blogspot.com/2011/05/now-youre-thinking-with-portals.html) about this.

If only there were multiple solutions to each particular puzzle, that would've extended the lifespan of the game considerably; but you're right, you do play it for the dialogue.

Yeah, I guess. Heaven's Light grates on my nerves for the little kids emotions, and the fact that I have to wait through it before I get to listen to Frollo sing about lust while baring his soul to a fireplace. I suppose it would seem much better without Hellfire on it's tail, but not to much better, IMO.

In terms of enabling people to break out into song, nothing beats "I'll Make a Man Out of You".

Moaning Mertyl was a character who was charactarized by her a) mudblood status, b) the fact that she died and haunts a toiler, and c) cries a lot.

And was played by a beautiful 45-year old; if I look that well-preserved when I'm 45, I'll definitely be pleased.

A life-long spiral of let-downs that would make lesser men cry tears of joy. Tears. From the shock of it all.

It sounds like it's definitely time to watch Tengen Toppa Gurren Langann, and turn those tears of joy into tears of awesome.

Indubitably. Forever.

Bold.

How bold; I salute you

Japanese mummies, maybe, but the history of the larder? And actually, your thing sounds interesting?

The two feature an intertwinning history; this brought the Engima of Amigara Fault into existence.

South Americas's south is Chile and Argentina, their extreme souths are called desserts and have had little population density for a long time by virtue of being rather deadly.

Africa is Africa and I doubt Australia is that far down the south.

Everything is extreme over here; especially winter. It's meant to be cold at the moment, given the season, but it only brought us closer to the Sun.

Yes. Although those two often go hand in hand (not me though, usually. I don't think anyone could call Frollo charming).

Hell yes!

Again, you need to meet Viola.

She'll be the Little Red-Haired Girl to my Charlie Brown, just like she always was.

Sexy isn't always related to attractive.

Most of the time and at least in one definition. Though charming is as well related it lacks the sexual descriptor before it.
And according to the Oxford Dictionary (as official as you get)

Sexy
adjective (sexier, sexiest)
1 sexually attractive or exciting:
sexy French underwear
sexually aroused:
neither of them was feeling sexy
2 informal very exciting or appealing:
business magazines might not seem like the sexiest career choice

Charming
adjective
very pleasant or attractive:
a charming country cottage
(of a person or their manner) very polite, friendly, and likeable:
he was a charming, affectionate colleague

Good night.

well, blue in itse'f is nice but when it's in led form, like the display on my clock.... it seems like it's perpetually blur thirty

Bluebluebluegreenorange. (http://www.lawrence-najjar.com/papers/Using_color_effectively.html)

The reason for not using saturated blue for text, thin lines, and high resolution information is simple. The eye is not designed to see it clearly.

The lens absorbs some of the light that is transmitted through it. In fact, the lens absorbs almost twice as much light in the blue region of the color spectrum as in the yellow and red regions (Murch, 1983). This problem increases with age because the lens gradually yellows and filters out the shorter wavelengths of light, such as blue.

To focus light onto the retina, small muscles in the eye change the thickness and thinness of the lens. When these muscles are relaxed, the lens focuses middle wavelength light, such as yellow and green, on the retina. To focus long wavelength light, the muscles make the lens thicker. To focus short wavelength light, like blue, the muscles must make the lens thinner. Saturated blue, however, has such a short wavelength that the lens simply cannot be made thin enough to focus it on the retina. Instead, the wavelengths that produce saturated blue focus in front of the retina (Murch, 1984c). This means that small, saturated blue objects, like text, always appear blurry to us.

The non-uniform distribution of photopigments among the cones in the retina is biased against blue. About 64% of the cones contain "red" photopigment, 32% contain "green," and only about 2% contain "blue" (Murch, 1983). In fact, the center of the retina, where the lens focuses incoming wavelengths, has almost no cones with "blue" photopigment (Murch, 1984c; Human Factors Society, 1988). This means that we cannot focus on small, saturated, blue objects -- like text.

The opponent color theory also explains why we have trouble perceiving small, saturated blue objects. In the opponent color theory, opponent colors are red-green and blue-yellow. Brightness information is transmitted using inputs from the red and green cones. So blue is not involved in transmitting brightness information. This means that the eye has difficulty perceiving differences in the brightness of saturated blue objects. Since brightness differences help the eye to focus on objects, the edges of saturated blue objects will be perceived as blurry (Murch, 1983).

So, don't use saturated blue for text or other small objects. Instead, depending on the background, use black, white, and gray because the eye can focus best on these colors (Murch, 1984a).

Blargh. Why is the old thread locked? Now I have to reconstruct quotes by hand.

I used to make the distinction between newbies, regulars, and the Playground elite, but that was only when I was a relative newbie. After rising through the ranks, I've realized that the distinction is an illusion. There is no "upper class" here, just Playgrounders.

Oh no, it's not like a status thing, but there is a distinction. The Old Guard have been here for years, they have a bunch of shared experiences and inside jokes and so on. Also they're really recognisable.

I'm just a guy that used to browse these forums a lot, but I lost interest. I check the forums every once in a while and each time there are different people who are "popular" or "regulars."

If you looked in RB in the past couple of years I will have been here. Also probably Curly.

Aw, geez :smalltongue: hold on...

EDIT: Is there an easy way to do this..?

Well, what you should have done is quoted the OP of the last thread to make the OP of this thread, and then just added the link for the last thread. Of course now you can't do that because it's locked for some reason, so you either have to do it all by hand, or I guess you could ask Rawhide nicely? Or you could go back to the last unlocked RB thread, quote it from there and just add the subsequent links.
But however you do it, those links must be reinstated. You've been here a while, you should know how this works. :smallannoyed:

Frollo is sexy, Gothel is sexy, Snape is sexy, Bellatrix is sexy. The awesome villains are sexy. (And I'm counting Snape, even though he isn't.) Jafar? NO. He is stupid!

Massive no. For one thing, Jafar may not be sexy, but he's sexier than Snape.
Secondly and more to the point, what really makes villains in that sort of mould great isn't sexiness. It's charisma. Style. Force of personality. Presence. A part of you wants to see them triumph, not because it would be a good thing, but because of the way they would do it. And Jafar has that.

There are other things that can make a good villain - as I say, this is just a particular mould of villain.

Why...what...how...who...what..when..what..how..wh at...you..what?

If you will make comments like being jealous at Blue's infatuation for Jeudi, expect such speculation.

Is it really the Old Guard?
There seems to be a split, half of it is extremely active and constantly posts around (which is more akin to regulars, regulars which have been here for years...). The other half seems non-existent until you watch them blink in and out once a year and see references to them in sigs and quotes the rest of the year (Which do sound like an old guard.).

He wanted to marry Jasmine to get power/consolidate his power, and also because she was desirable.

Um, no. It was pretty clear he was on Dumbledore's side the whole time, with only book 6 being any indication of the contrary. If he wasn't on dumbledore's side in book 6, then his dual with Harry at the end makes no sense at all, and he's either a massively incompetent and stupid villain (which is a stark contrast to the cold, calculating man he's always been) or he's actually not a villain at all and simply a player in a massive xanatos gambit by Dumbledore.

Examples:

Book 1: He was working against Quirrel the whole time because he believed that Quirrel was attempting to steal the stone.

Book 2: Well he didn't actually do much here.

Book 3: The worst you can accuse him of is holding a childhood grudge. The other option is that he helped the ministry hunt down who everyone thought was a murderer.

Book 4: As soon as he feels the Dark Mark returning, he encourages Karkaroff to stand by Dumbledore's side or flee to try and hide. After the mark returns in force, he selflessly agrees to spy on the Dark Lord.

Book 5: He tries to overcome his hatred and loathing for James Potter by teaching his son ligillimancy and continues spying for the Order of the Phoenix... only refusing to do so when Harry Potter invades his privacy.

Book 6: The first hints that he may be a double agent for Voldemort are spoken in his conversation with a pair of deatheaters who probably have the power to kill him. Then again, his excuses are fairly weak. He does kill Dumbledore, but to be very honest there was no way Dumbledore was going to live and probably suspected that the longer the Death Eaters stayed at the top of the tower, the more likely they were to detect Harry. In addition, he was saving Draco Malfoy the scarring and traumatizing act of committing murder. This is completely ignoring the crap about the "elder wand, the death stick, the wand of DESTINYYYYYYYYY!!!!" in the seventh book. Finally, when Harry and Snape "dual" Snape lets Harry go despite having immense superiority over Harry in the entire dual... choosing not to instead subdue him and bring him before the Dark Lord.

Snape was never a villain and to be very honest, JK Rowling's hamfisted attempts to classify Snape as a villain in her reader's minds were childish and made of failure. The only arguably evil act he committed in the entire series was to kill Dumbledore, something that would have been done by someone else anyways in that exact moment, and in doing so he protected Draco Malfoy's soul (remember that murder causes your soul to split).

Yes, okay. So sorry, that came out wrong. For the sixth book and the seventh book up until The Prince's Tale, Snape was awesome villain.

ZombyWoof
2011-07-01, 12:07 PM
Again in the sixth book it's pretty clear he's not a villain by the end of it. In his dual with Harry, if he were a villain he would have captured Harry and brought him back to Voldemort. Every other piece of evidence except possibly his killing of Dumbledore was intentionally left vague by Rowling.

I've already explained Dumbledore's death: someone was going to kill him, Snape just made the job faster to a) protect Malfoy's soul, b) protect his skin (if someone else killed him, Snape might have died due to the unbreakable bond), and c) get the deatheaters off the roof so Harry can escape.

Actually...
Yes, he is still a villainous character in all of those.
In the first book, what he actually did isn't explained at the time and his grudge against James affects how he views and treats Harry for the worse.

In the third book, he continues to work against the main trio even when there is evidence to support Sirius' innocence, because of a childhood grudge. Holding a childhood grudge doesn't sound so bad, until you realize that it would result in Sirius either having his soul ripped from his body or spending more time in a place where his happiness is constantly destroyed.

In the fourth, he continues to be a jerk to Harry because of his grudge against James.

In the fifth, he's petty and refuses to continue the (very important) occlumency lessons with Harry after Harry accidentally looks into Snape's mind.

In the sixth, he kills Dumbledore and leaves Harry alive for Voldemort to kill.

His one really evil act may have been killing Dumbledore, but he's also responsible for Voldemort attacking the Potters at all; recall who told Voldy about the prophecy. Furthermore, the motives behind Snape's action are never explained to the reader until the last book.
While I do agree that he isn't evil, that doesn't disqualify him from being a villain.

The reading stuff I can say would not necessarily vary, I watched a decent amount of tv and still ended up reading more than watching for some reason and good old 22 and 23 (Discovery Channel and History Channel before it got fixated in world war II) actually pushed me to read (and my parents did that as well since I ended up learning equal dosage of conspiracy theories and conflicting theories and they decided it was better for me to sort it out by myself). As for healthiness I don't even know the true correlation, but I believe it does affect (though for different reasons other than time).

My attention span seems equal to my cousins's cousins's which have grown in a 0 technology environment. Though I never watch for long extended periods of time, just short breaks during the day and Sakura Card Captors at 8:00 p.m. the Wednesdays.

Somehow, I don't think that's normally how relationships of any sort whatsoever normally start.
It's hardly dignified or anything. I mean shipping any person who gave permission with another person (or more) in stories that massively vary in quality.
And being the Mistress of it.

So now I do weights on top of my cardio-vascular work. My personal trainer is slightly camp though I think, just the voice and some of his mannerisms. It's pretty fun to be honest, and my right shoulder only hurts very slightly.
Probably though the alcohol that my mother plied me with isn't going to help matters.
She poured me about half a glass of martini and barely any lemonade on top!
She calls it a One Drink A Night Special.
I can see why.

I just feel like I'm always on the outside. It doesn't seem like I've found where I fit in... :smallfrown:

I tell you one thing: Even though things were a lot better in the gymnasium (Swedish high school. I keep writing it like that because we'd never call the American high school "gymnasium" in Swedish :smallwink:) than in upper elementary, I still felt a bit on the outside. Especially since I have problems with taking social initiatives and am generally bad at small talk.

Now, half a month ago, our Canadian exchange student had a birthday picnic with most of the class attending. Toward the end, I expressed a wish to do more things with the class (which I've come to love, despite not feeling fully fit in), but expressing my inability to take initiatives due to an unfounded fear that no one would attend or appreciate it. I must say that the responses I got was the most heartwarming thing I've heard (being said to me) in a long time (I won't get into them, they were pretty many).

So, my point with this was to tell that just because you feel outside doesn't neccessarily mean that you are outside, and that people may appreciate you a lot more than you actually know.

Also,

I've never been rebellious, experiencing mood swings or personality crises, had a change of taste/style (apart from liking music a bit more and becoming a slight bit disinterested in Lego (I like it, I just can't find the drive to build anything to nigh completion)) or anything like that typical teenage behaviour. Even though YES, anywhere you'd say so in the playground the effect would be much similar... there is no counter argument actually...

Going to far beyond, however will get you interesting results.
And I actually either reserve from commenting when I would be forced to lie or actually say what I mean severely softened, I don't believe in the concept of a white lie. And I'm normally a lot more direct in RL, the playground softness me since I can't really see people's facial expressions or mental state from this side of the screen.

It's called fishing for compliments when done intentionally. It's very common among girls. That doesn't mean they all are though. I certainly mean it when I have these sudden fears that you're all just too polite to tell me that I'm actually obnoxious and you all hate me.
Polite is different from lying. Polite would be either not saying anything or just agreeing with someone from the mass discretely. The moment one begins to elaborate you either mean it or are lying, and I don't presume the Playground lying, ergo they mean it. As for me, if I had any argument against I would present it in a moderate way.

Weeztop flagmol!

(I, like my brother tend to make up words and then use them in regular conversations. I say Hebble-ho to say hello, he says Good $TIME! to say good bye (I don't have an excuse, but he has Aspergers))

So do I but I don't make up words :smalltongue:
