I've been looking at saga edition again, and wondering why anyone would bother with advanced weapon proficiency. Every other proficiency can be gained through multiclassing, lightsabers are better for their size catagory, and the sheer diversity of simple weapons probably makes them a better choice for specialisation.

Additionally it seems weird that someone with access to a vibroblade or bayonette would leave it switched off- Is their any fluff reason why the sonic vibrations would make a weapon that much harder to use?

Would it be fair to just make all advanced melee weapons simple? Or give avanced melee proficiency as a bonus feat for the soldier class?

Weapon Proficiency [advanced melee weapons] is already a bonus feat for every class except Jedi. :smallconfused:

Anyway, don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

Seriously? I must have missed some errata or something because my book doesn't include that in the bonus feat lists.

Either way I'll go with this, thanks for the response.

It's not errata (unless it was removed by an errata), since my book is from the original print run.

There are quite a few reasons to use an advanced melee weapon:

-Usually better crit range (neutronium reinforcement from Scum&Villainy makes your crit range 19-20; the only eqivalent for lightsabers is Vapaad talent, which requires 12 BAB, Juyo, weapon focus and weapon specialization: lightsaber)

-The lightsabers might deal the most damage in a given size category, but other weapons outdo them in absolute damage: the most damaging lightsaber (great lightsaber) is 2d10; the most damaging advanced melee (power hammer) deals 2d12

Advanced Melee weapons are great - I made a droid soldier that two-handed two vibroaxes (he had reinforced mounts or whatever they're called). He outdamaged everyone else in the party by a long shot, but wound up exploding due to his poor defenses.

Brobot, you will be missed.

Except if they have DR or the like in which the lightsaber is much better.
