at least that's what wizards of the coast thinks :smalltongue: i saw this today i felt the playground would appreciate the irony. In the incantrix fluff text it says "Because they have little offensive combat magic against normal creatures, they prefer to avoid combat or travel with companions who balance their shortcomings"

just wanted to share! (hope i didn't get anyone's hackles up too much with the thread tittle)

Just read this. There are a number of beautiful gems in this article. (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/cwc/20061013a)

"The monk is the only other core class, aside from the barbarian, that has no dead levels. Players always have something to look forward to with the monk, which boasts the most colorful and unique special abilities of all the character classes."

Actually, that might not be stupidity, but laziness. I think copied that line from the 2e incantatrix-description, where it had to specialize in the incantation sub-school, which had many opposed schools, among them the then most powerful schools evocation, necromancy and conjuration

I still can't decide whether to giggle or facepalm when I read through the first chapter of Complete Mage. I can also never decide if it's just WotC not understanding how their own game works, or if it's them just stubbornly (if somewhat reasonably) refusing to admit that the assumptions they had when they wrote the PHB aren't really accurate.

The idea is that since Incantrix have so much stuff to use against other casters, they suffer against non-magic creatures.

Well.. it's not *wrong*. Monks do have a lot of assorted interesting special abilities. They're not claiming those abilities are powerful, after all, just that they are around and the fill in the Monk's level chart (unless you disagree with their definition of a 'dead level'. Like, say, Monk 14, where the "colorful and unique special ability" to look forward to is that you can Slow Fall down a little bit longer wall.)

And the commentary on casters is basically "well, at least they get spells".

I think this (http://instantrimshot.com/index.php?sound=priceiswrong&play=true) neatly sums up the appropriate response to WotC in these instances
