I'd like to hear what everyone else has to say about the spell. Effectively, we're trying to use it to make a constant item that casts Zone of Silence in the creature's space. A similar item are the Shackles of Silence, but those are designed with Silence, not Zone of.
The way I read it, the two spells do the following:
Silence-
1. Sound cannot go In to Out, Out to In, or Through.
2. Spells with Verbal Components cannot be cast.
Zone of Silence-
1. Sound within the field travels normally.
2. Sound does not travel outside of the field.
3. Language-Dependent and Sonic Spells cannot effect targets outside the field.
And while ZoS is 4 times smaller, it seems significantly better than Silence in almost every other way. So, by interpretation, Boots of Zone of Silence would make Move Silently checks obsolete, wouldn't cast a field of silence over your target (if you're sneaking up on them) and alert them to your presence (or at least that something was wrong), and wouldn't deafen the caster.
Am I right?
