View Full Version : What's your favorite die?

I didn't see a thread like this on the front page, but there's probably one further down.

Anyhow, what is your favorite die type? These can be standard D&D dice, d30s, weird dice, anything. Pics would be appreciated.

Personally, I'm partial to the d12. It's the outcast of the group, but it's got a nice shape and size, looks cool, and could be used to cut huge d6 pools in half.

Interesting. I suppose my favourite die is the d12 as well. As said, it's an often neglected little die if certain classes aren't in play at the time, but it has a nice feel to it. The d20 is a close second due to the fact that it just feels like 'The Decider'.

My girlfriend's is the d6. I only mention because she once based a play session over using it as often as possible, due to it being the only 'familiar' die.
She... She's loosened up.

Fudge dice, also known as the dF. The d6 is second, due to its utility in dice pool systems, the d8 in third, due to personal preference regarding odds of success in dice pool systems.

I'm also fond of proper d(odd number)s, particularly d3s as they tend to have interesting forms if they aren't spindle dice. Case in point:

I made a d48, d60, and d120 out of rubber balls, with pins for the vertices and thread to mark the edges. Those are probably my favorites.

(And, since I am a purist, the opposite sides added up to 49, 61, and 121, respectively.)

d12. It has enough sides to roll and not just flop, while the individual sides are still large enough for it to feel solid and stable. I also seem to have good luck with them, partly because I don't use them often.

D20. It has a pleasing shape, feels solid in the hand and rolls in a very satisfying way.

Not really. D12 has a very different output than 2d6. For starters, it can roll 1.

Point, but is it more valuable to have an average roll 1 higher or to not lose dice everywhere and spend twice as long tallying them all?

I'm a fan of the d8. The poor, often ignored d8. I like the shape, and it doesn't have oddly shaped sides or look like a ball like its larger cousins. I guess the d10 would rank up there as well, primarily due to enjoying the WoD system.

The distributions are also completely different. For something trivial, such as a damage roll in D&D, that isn't a big deal, but if you are looking at core mechanic level stuff, d12 and 2d6 are fundamentally different.

Rolling a whole bucket of dice is much more fun. Even if they somehow produced the same results, I'd rather go with 2d6.

D6. The most common. The most varied (in color and such).

PS you can't use a D12 to cut a D6 pool in half. Take 2 D6s, the minimum is 2. VS 1d12. The minimum is 1. See my point? So when you get huge pools it can really make a difference.

I actually prefer d8s and was surprised to hear someone call them "often ignored" in this thread. (Not trying to be rude, I was genuinely surprised by that statement)

I use d8s for almost all my dice rolling (Well, all my non-d20 rolling anyway). Weapon damage rolls? I like longswords for my warriors and morningstars for my clerics. Special attack rolls? Dragonborn of Bahamut have d8 breath weapons. Weapon-like spells? Lesser Orbs do 1d8/2 levels of damage. Hit dice? Sometimes, if I'm playing a cleric, though usually it's a d10.

With a (fair) d12, all results have an equal chance coming up. With 2d6, there is more combinations that make certain numbers. With 2d6, 7 can up from 1+6, 2+5, 3+4, 4+3, 5+2, and 6+1, six different ways, while 12, will only come up with one combination, 6+6. Very different odds those. The difference is what is called the probability distribution. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Probability_distribution)

As for my favourite, I like the lonely d12. It rolls well and there is something nice of been able to come up with a double digit number on three different results.

Technically, using d12s instead of 2d6 changes quite a few things. Average damage, statistical distribution of damage, etc. Still, it's an underused die in D&D.

I use the hell out of them in d20 M, though, since it's the .50 cal damage die. Nothing like rolling a mittful of D12s.

For actual playable dice, there's a pair my father used to play with that were 20-sided d10s. They both had 0 through 9, with one set of numbers colored differently for use as d20s, and the die themselves were different colors for use as d%.

Not really, unless you throw them with far more force than necessary. But yes you could most likely break them if you put your mind to it, but not by normal usage... well unless you throw them at a particularly thick-headed DM of course, everything has a breaking point. :p

For me its got to be the D4. When I first got into gaming (about 11 yrs old) it confused the hell out of me, it was such an odd dice to see what result you had. Every other dice was the result that was 'face up' but no, not the D4 this had the number on all 3 sides and only the one that was facing the right way up counted.

Even now, 2 decades later, it still holds a little bit of that zannyness

While D6 is my favorite die, I'm somewhat particular about it.

For some reason, and I myself can't honestly explain it, I hate D6's with numbers on them. Any other type of die with numbers is fine with me. Actully I prefer all of the other dies to have numbers on them.

But a D6 with numbers just irritates me. I can't stand them. I usually throw them out whenever I buy those huge bulky pounds of dice, or change up whatever is in my current dice bag.

I love pips though. A good d6 must have pips. To me, the best looking pips are casino dice. So my bag has a bunch of regular gaming dice and a bunch of really good looking casino style D6's. They are clean, clear, concise, usually a good color, roll wonderfully well and look professional. And of course... they have pips.

So yeah, Casino style d6's are my favorite.

My favourite die is =randbetween(1,x), where x is whatever number I need, because it makes dynamic random encounter tables possible (dynamic in the sense that if a party kills something, there's one fewer encounter of that type wandering around, so encountering it again in the future becomes 1 less likely; this wouldn't work as well if the number always needed to add up to 100 so I can use a d%).

My least favourite die is the d4, because it doesn't roll, it simply, as an earlier poster said, flops. Also, the "I rolled max damage. It was a four. Joy." effect.

I too like the most my d10 on a d20. It's white, with 2 series from 0 to 9 in gray and in black. It makes for a good d10 and also a good d20.

Secondly I like a set of two d10s, une numbered 0, 1, 2, ... and the other 00, 10, 20, ... Yes, you could have two d10s of different colors, but in this way is more ...luxurious.

Then I prefer d6 with numbers to those with pips; maybe beacuse I have only four or five of them.

I like the feel of a d20. I like how rolling multiple d20's feels in the palm of your hand. I like sorting them out, seeing which attack hits and which doesn't. I like the look on the faces of my players when I pick them all up and roll again. Because they're fighting a eleven-headed hydra.

I don't like that the '17' on my first d20 has lost a bit of it's ink.

Other than that, I have a nifty looking d7 and one of these days I will buy a d30.

I like rolling a spherical 'd20', but it can't be called a d20 in that it has one side......... It's really just a bouncy ball with numbers on it I made. I really enjoy seeing my party stare when I bring it out in a suspenseful fight. It takes a LONG time to stop rolling >:D

Take a strip of paper, put a half-turn in it and stick both ends together. Draw a '1' on it somewhere, then drop it on the table whenever you feel the urge.

NOT THE TWENTY. D20s constantly rake me over the coals, burning my very soul with their intense hatred of my existence. Seriously. I once rolled 7 d20s in a row that were 6 or less. As I was sneaking through town. My perception checks (with bonuses) rarely add up to ten. They do this to me often. So I hate them.

My fav would have to be the solid d6. It's traditional. It's firm. Rogues can accumulate a heap of 'em. It's the basic dice. They make the best sounds. And, I can consistently get rolls of around 4.2/6 out of 'em. Yes, I tested, checked, and counted.

D8 by a narrow margin over d10. 8's my second favourite number and both d8s and d10s have an interesting shape without feeling as clunky as a d12 or starting to get that "sphere" feeling d20s, d30s, and d100s have.

I'm another d12-er, because there's so little love for it. It's "hip", still cool like the d20, but with bigger, more solid faces. And there's just something neat about the cut. Having pentagons fit together seems a lot cooler than having triangles fit together.

I don't particularly care if the odds on the d20 are easier to track (although, hypocritically, that's the reason I prefer the d20 for game design), I think the d12 is very cool, and deserves more love.

On further thinking, I do have to give the d6 some love as well. Because those things are always around, no matter where you go. No need to carry around fancy, eccentric dice bags or visit esoteric game shops to score a healthy bunch of your basic dice, since every household is bound to have said bunch stored away somewhere for board games or such, in my experience

d12, hands down.

As a DM, I never really used it that much... which meant when I was reaching for random stuff to represent NPCs on the battlemat, the d12 was right there, easily in reach. Starting back in AD&D, that little blue d12 has represented all manner of important (and a few unimportant) NPCs; ever since that one trans-planar campaign, that d12 is forever linked with my favorite NPC of all time. Some of my older players will call out that NPCs name when I pull out the old d12...

I love the novelty and symetry of the d12, but when was the last time anyone in the group (or the entire group) said a silent prayer on the roll of a d12?

No my friend, when youre rolling to see if you make that acrobatics check on a ledge over a 100' drop and your character is a 5th level bard, when you're making that fort save against the stare of a basilisk, when you're rolling to see if your character hits the BBEG when it has 2 hps left and the rest of the party is down and you know the big bad has at least one more fireball left in him, all eyes are glued to...

Indeed. They are quite useful and fun to roll for low level mage, small rogues, and the like.

Existing dice: the d4. Tetrahedrons are awesome, and besides, you don't get to roll d4s very often.

As for anything...
The standard uniform distribution: Anywhere between 0 and 1, equally distributed. When multiple rolls are combined in can generate any common distribution. Plus, a single roll is sufficient to emulate any "normal" die (n sides, each of which come up with probability 1/n).

Oh, you say continuous distributions are not allowed? In that case, the Poisson distribution with--what, you say infinite-range distributions are not allowed either? In that case, my choice is the d19. It is a rare prime die, and it just barely lost out to the most used die of all-the d20. So my final choice for a die is the d19.
