It occurred to me, as I read through the archives yet again, that the IFCC never explicitly stated that they would take V's soul AFTER he/she died. V definitely asserted such, but allowing him/her to make assumptions would not bind them to abide said assumptions, right?

Yes, since the IFCC has indicated several times that they don't want V to die at this point, and have indicated a wish to take the gates, it is essentially a matter of putting two and two together. However, nothing has been explicitly stated, so there is a bit of room for doubt.
