View Full Version : PF: Can a construct have feats?

I'm trying to build a monster, specifically a construct; I came across this:

Skill points equal to 2 + Int modifier (minimum 1) per Hit Die. However, most constructs are mindless and gain no skill points or feats. Constructs do not have any class skills, regardless of their Intelligence scores.

From here. (http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/monsters/creatureTypes.html)

Does my construct get to have any feats? It's a sword-fighter type of thing. Further, since it's mindless, do I give it an INT or WIS score of 0? I know that it won't get a CON score.

Only if it has an Intelligence score, unless it is mentioned to have feats in its entry.

House rules could probably let you craft it with a feat for a cost. And construction would require the feat as a prerequisite.

EDIT: missed the last two lines :smalltongue:

It should have an Intelligence of 1 at least. Constructs does have wisdom scores. Average for most.

A mindless construct has Int -, no skills, and no feats.

A construct with Int of 1 or more gets skills = 2+int mod (at least 1/HD, 4x for the first), and normal feats for its HD. I don't recall any specific cases of this that aren't living constructs in 3.5, but I haven't ever looked for it before. For reference things with Int of 1-2 are of animal intelligence.

Lifespark Constructs (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/bestiary/monster-listings/templates/lifespark-construct-template) can gain feats and skill points. Otherwise, no, Constructs cannot gain feats, skill points, or any other things which require Intelligence scores.

tichnically, no x4 for the first in PF.

The Robot template from Dungeons of Golarian will give your construct intelligence, however.

For something which isn't third-party, a Bioconstruct Modification (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/magic/building-and-modifying-constructs) costs 22,750gp and increases the construct's CR by 1.

Lack of skills and feats is a function of Int -- (specifically, of the associated Mindless ability), not the Construct type.

You can go the bonus feat route, if you're only looking to add one specific feat to a mindless creature. While not a construct, examples of a mindless creature with a bonus feat would be skeleton and zombie templates.

So -- no Int, means no skills or feats. Special Attacks would be the way to go?

Also, still sort of wondering about Wis...

Mindless creatures have Wisdom and Charisma. They just lack Intelligence.

Even oozes and skeletons have Wis

If you're the dungeon master, and you want a construct to have feats, give the damn thing feats.

It's not like the players are going to rise up against you.

Depends on what your building. The lack of feats and skills is dependent on the Int score, not the type. My favorite examples being the Inevitables (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/inevitable.htm).

In the case of mindless constructs (not all are), it's Int -, not Int 0. Wis and Cha are based on the specific critter (as is Int, really).

Are you the DM, making an arbitrary construct, or are you a player, crafting one by the rules? This changes answers rather significantly....

Robot template? Tell me more!

All I know off the top of my head is that it is a template found in Dungeons of Golarion (the Red Redoubt section, which is about Numerian technology) which provides Constructs with an intelligence score, while making them a tad more fragile. I believe they take increased damage from electricty.

If you could reproduce the text of this template (assuming it is OGL) I will love you forever.
