View Full Version : What to name a Luxury Submarine?

In the campaign I'm DMing I gave access to (once they fix it up) what is essentially a luxury mage tower-submarine, as part of the treasure they're getting for the campaign. I just can't think of a good name for it though, and I think it should have a good one, or none at all.

Backstory of the vessel: It once belonged to a powerful (level 25ish? 30 tops) wizard of an ancient magi (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Precursors) race that once lived in floating continents a la Chrono Trigger. It used to be able to fly and swim but now enough magic power has leaked from it that is can only swim and surface. Consider it like a ~150 foot super yacht, only it's circular, like a UFO or Chemosphere house, (http://www.google.com/search?q=Chemosphere&hl=en&prmd=ivns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=22IqTvXlNuPniALloeWvAg&ved=0CEwQsAQ) 100 foot diameter, 3 floors, 5 staterooms and a master, arcane library, etc. Continent crashed after a particularly cataclysmic war and the flying house went down with it, only to be found 10,000 years later.

So, any good ideas, playground? Ripping off other names is fine (and encouraged!) but please let me know what the name is from if you can. You know, juuuust in case I get called on it :smallwink:

On that note, Talon Karde named one of his luxury yachts the Uwana Buyer.

I really should point to The Culture novels by Iain M Banks in which Very powerful (sentient) spacecraft names themselves.

For example,
*No More Mr Nice Guy
*Proft Margin
*Trade Surplus
*So Much For Subtlety
*Youthful Indiscretion
*It's Character Forming
*No Fixed Abode
*Wisdom Like Silence
*Just Passing Through
*Excuses And Accusations
*You'll Thank Me Later
*Conventional Wisdom
*Now Look What You've Made Me Do
*Don't Try This At Home
*Now We Try It My Way

Oh, yeah! Wasn't that the one he was in when he picked up Mara Jade on that backwater planet where the locals were hunting sentient life-forms or farming components for explosives or something?

Depending on the wizard's personality, he might use the Ob'enn method of naming ships - Cloak of Untrammeled Dignity would be great (Sword of Inevitable Justice might be as well).

Schlock Mercenary is a good source of ship names in general: Post-Dated Check Loan, Serial Peacemaker (brilliant for an adventurer), Predictably Damaged, Pretentious Drivel.

"Dead weight" rings a bell in my ear, especially for something that doesn't look like it should float but does so anyhow.

"It's magic! I ain't have to explain carp!" could work, too, even if it is a bit wordy.:smalltongue: Actually, scratch that: just name the thing "Carp." Paint it a good red-orange color just to drive that idea home.

Anyway, Red Herring is an awesome name for a submarine.

I think I want to give it some fantastical, ethereal, unearthly name and have it's translation be Red Herring.

Translate to greek, then to italian, and finally to latin.
Granted, that'll give a different answer than if you just go from English to Latin, but that'd be part of the unearthliness.

When in doubt, borrow from Schlock Mercenary and call it the Serial Peacemaker.

Then you can say you're going to"pour some Serial Peacemaker into a big bowl of no-problem. (http://www.schlockmercenary.com/2003-09-16)'"

Yeah... the Bard in my group keeps insisting that our ship's name is "She's One of Ours, Captain!" even though it has "SRG Legacy" written on her side and "Her Serenity's Grace" on the crest (hint: we started in Sigil).

On topic: "This ship submarine belongs to a PC group! Hands/paws/tentacles off or we'll find out just how much exp you're worth the hard way!"

Asheram
2011-07-30, 05:01 PM
Well.. How about not naming it at all?
This is basicly a flying castle and I doubt there ever was more than one of them out of there. He'd probably just refer to it as "my ship" or "my house" and if people asked where to deliver a thing, he'd say. "You'll know when you see it."

Alternatively, it could be like naming his house and probably has a big arcane mark on the hull to show you who owns it.

I second the vote for yellow submarine, also make sure you've got 4 bards on board. ! will have perform(percussion), 2 will have perform(lyre), and 1 will have perform(bass lyre), 1 of the lyre players will have leadership with a fat asian cohort. :smallamused:
