Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Hi, everyone. I'm about to head to bed, but I before I did, I just wanted to apologize on how I've been acting the past week or so. I know I really haven't been at my best, been kinda anti-social and unreliable, and that at worse I've been, well, pretty complain-y and had a bad attitude, honestly. Ok so i had a brain wave. hear me out. ok so elements of harmony= parts of friendship right? now what if, each of the elements had a partner, Twlight and Trixie, applejack and soren, Rainbow and DJ Pon-3 and so on. Would the power of love make the elements even stronger? Like super charge them? cause i totally want to write that into the end of ponyard's story.

That would certainly be interesting to write out. But the elements are powerful enough to defeat Nightmare Moon as it stands, what would they need to be more powerful for? :P

Well I'll admit, I was in a real funk on Thursday (or was it Tuesday? I forget) when your comments on Nyx set off a bit of rage and feelings of inadequacy of my own. After all, Midnight is beloved to an extreme that brings out the worst of the green eyed monster in me, and seeing you unhappy about Nyx getting positive comparisons to Midnight irked me a bit.

I forgive you for the tiny, unintentional role you had in that. 'Cause I know you didn't have any responsibility for it.

It's alright, I think we *both* were in bad moods in Thursday (it was Thursday, because it was a day before the funeral), and yeah, it's sort of kind of dawned on me how I was feeling was maybe how a lot of people felt about me, and how kinda lucky I've gotten, and how it was unfair that I was feeling that way. Gave me a sort of a slap upside the head, 'You dolt' sort of thing. So, yeah, I apologize and forgive you, too.

Also, if it helps, your fics are plenty awesome, and they do need more attention. And fanart.


On the Past Sins/Nyx grumbling, it's quite ironic to see complaints against the fic being done both here and on /fic/ in ponychan.

As one poster put it succintly there:

I wholly agree with that statement. The last few chapters had me 'meh' what the hay is this thing going.

I noticed that thread, actually, in my perusal of ponychan last night, and when I went back today, sitting here watching the rain go down, it was gone, replaced by a 'discussion thread' that basically states you're not allowed to have dissenting opinions in that thread. So, yeah, I guess it got a little too heated.

And I actually agree with that statement, and as a man of mass media, despite my personal problems with the story, I absolutely have to respect, on a professional level, the authors for the top-notch advertising. I agree with that one dude who said something like "It's probably the strongest ad campaign for a fic this fandom has seen yet."


I think you've been fine. After all, you've been concerned enough to apologize (several times), which clearly shows you care. I'd say you just need more internet hugs until you start feeling better.

Honestly, that's why I like this thread. We're willing to actually sit down (errr, metaphorically) and actually talk to one another when stuff like this happens. We're actual, mature human beings, and I love this thread for that. Not just the wackiness and the ponies and that, but the fact that we treat each other with respect.


I know well what a downbeat mood can do to a mind and how hard it is to break out of. Hope both of you find a healthier balance, some better luck, and some solid priorities.

Oh, I know I'll bounce back, and I'm working on it right now. Believe me, I've been through enough in my life that I know a situation like this, I can beat, there's no doubt about that.

And I'm back. I kinda want to go back and quote some of the responses to my question about ponyships in MLP:BF, but I'm a bit lazy 'cause I just woke up and I can't quite remember where they all are in the thread.

Anyway, I think everyone pretty much agreed that a friend system was a good idea, even if choosing a single 'best friend' wasn't (and, to be honest, that wasn't one of my choices either). It has also given me a couple ideas as follows:

A 2-variable system seems like it'd be pretty popular, with one variable being how somepony feels about you in the long term and the other being the short term, which varies a bit more widely. I don't really have names for them other than short/long term and I don't think there's anything else that sums it up as well. It'd be difficult, if not outright impossible, to lose long-term progress, but the short term can vary a little more wildly with varying results on your long term relationship (i.e. if Rarity gets mad at you, it stalls your long-term progress, apologize outright and short term just returns to normal, if you get Rarity to apologize and don't rub it in her face, you get a boost to your long term and short term relationships). In this case I'd probably simplify the number of long term relationship levels down to about 3 or so.

Another idea I had, since there's technically no 'end-game' for pony relationships, is to create one. Getting to be best friends with a pony only gets you about half of their full story. When you get to the 'best friend' level, they start coming to you for help or to invite you to events. Like Applejack will ask you to help her with apple-bucking, Pinkie Pie will invite you to various parties, and they'd occasionally ask you to help you find something specific for them. I have no idea what sort of benefits to provide at that point for doing what they ask, but I'm inclined towards temporary bonuses.

I might've had a third thing, but it's slipped my mind by now.

Oh wait, I remember. There was some guy who posted that he thought a game about farming would be pretty dull. To be honest, yeah it would be if all you ever focused on was the farming. If that's all I ever did in Harvest Moon, my days would be wake up, water plants, feed livestock, sleep. The social aspect is what makes it more enjoyable, as you make friends with all the townspeople and get to know them.

And he was an enormous Gary Stu; when I had to take a leave of absence, they did some side campaigns and by the end of it... Gary Stu is putting it MILDLY, how many different girlfriends and such he had. It ruined the campaign for me personally, since the wide disparity of talents and the BS that is BESM D20 meant that I could either make every villain into something he'd kill in ten seconds flat, or everyone else spent the whole time missing.

I was not a good GM. I'll admit. But that character is part of the reason I hated Doctor Who before I even started watching it.

I know I really haven't been at my best, been kinda anti-social and unreliable, and that at worse I've been, well, pretty complain-y and had a bad attitude, honestly. That reminds me of a thought I had earlier. In Ponyland, what's the token you give to someone for engagement? There were hoof sized rings in the dragon's horde (Rarity wore one), but I think we'd have noticed that on Mr. and Mrs. Cake's hooves. Then again, they would probably take them off for work, but something that large and impractical doesn't strike me as fitting. So I'm more than open to ideas.

Big Macintosh is basically, in my mind, sort of a Hank Hill type. Some of the anger, though he keeps calmer than ol' Hank. However, he likes working. Like, if he had to assign Apple Bloom a punishment, he'd have to remember that not everypony LIKES mowing the lawn.

The reason I bring this up is the idea that one of Big Mac's favorite memories from his teenage years was that summer he worked as a farm hand at Old Man Pie's rock farm.

Gettin' up at sunrise, helpin' him and his daughters move the rocks from one field to the other, just to move 'em back the next day... no talkin' or laughin' or anythin' while ah worked the field. Eeyup. That was the best summer of mah life.

Is it me, or does the abundance of creativity surrounding ponies, by law of supply and demand, lead to feedback being much more "valuable" then average contributions? I always feel bad when I post something without paying my "dues" by commenting on others' works first. But I'm not good at chit-chat, and not giving everypony equal attention seems unfair, while giving everypony equal attention will mean each share approaches zero.

Ponies might just not do rings or the like for marriage. Perhaps they go for a more old school style and work off of dowries and the like. CHARACTER CREATION
1- Choose Character Racial Card.

Each character's charisma card is broken in two parts, the body type and their ability scores.
The body type determines what basic physical features the characters has. Pony and Buffalo types have one head and 4 hooves. Griffin and Dragon types have 2 claws and 2 feet.

Attributes. Each racial card grants access to 3 or more attribute scores

A style type can be either cool, cute, dark, geeky, glamorous, hot, or rough. When performing a charisma action for an NPC, add + 2 to your charisma score if your style type matches the type the NPC prefers.

There are 6 charisma score.
Appearance (The attractiveness of the pony's first impression.)
Speech (The appeal of the pony's speaking voice)
Song (The appeal of the pony's singing voice)
Dance (The appeal of the pony's dance moves)
Wealth (The size of the pony's income)
Reputation (The pony's status in pony society)

A character's charisma score individually cannot exceed 4 and collectively cannot normally exceed 10. The amount that the sum of a character's combined charisma score exceeds 10 by creates the character's Maintenance. Charisma scores can be negative to avoid high Maintenance.

When a character first meets, talks to, purchases an item from.or performs for a NPC, they must make the corresponding charisma roll. A charisma roll is 6 six-sided dice. Rolls of 5 or 6 grants +1 bonus to the charisma roll. Rolls equal to less than the character's Maintenance grant a -1 penalty to the charisma roll.. This is added to the charisma score of the performance being done. The result in compared to the challenge and if higher, it is a succes.

4- Choose Skill Card

Each character's skill card is broken in two parts, their profession and their skill scores.

A profession can be any job the character prefer to work as. When performing an action, add + 2 to the corresponding score if your profession would help you in anyway.

There are 6 skill scores.
Athletics (General stamina, sportiness, and athletic skill.)
Craft (The ability to make things)
Hooves (Hoof dexterity and speed)
Intelligence (General smarts and ability to do business)
Random (General wackiness not normal of characters of their type to exhibit)
Will (Mental toughness and bravery)

Ponies are weird. Characters display their weirdness through quirks. Quirks are optional but can be quite powerful. *Positive quirks are called perks and negative quirks are called flaws. For every helpful perk a character has, they must also have a harmful flaw.

Perks
Big Talker- Singer: Before making a Speech Performance, roll a d6. If you get a 4 or higher, you my change the charisma type of the speech.
Singer: Before making a Song Performance, roll a d6. If you get a 4 or higher, you my change the charisma type of the song.
Mastery- Choose an ability, charisma, or skill. Reroll all 1s when rolling for that score.
Faithful Student: +2 for all scores when in the presence of your teacher.
Fashionista: +3 to Appearance and Reputation Performances when wearing clothes.
Mini Admirer: You have an admirer. Your admirer grants you with 1 bonus item cards every other scene.
5 bits please: Your saddlebags always contain whatever anypony wants to buy (they must be able to pay you for it to appear). A character can trade you a bit card to for an item card.
Stare Master: You may use your Fly Speed score for as a Natural Bond score with a +1 bonus.
Animal Companion: You have an animal friend. You start with 2 bonus level cards.
Motivator: Once per scene, You make a Speech or Song Performance versus any character's Will to negate one Flaw they have.
Nerd: +2 to Intelligence and Spell knowledge.
Hard worker: +2 to Athletics and Strength.
Natural Born Flyer: +2 to Hooves and Wings.

Flaws
Funny Accent: -3 to Speech.
Clumsy: -3 to Hooves
Phobia: Choose a thing to be afraid of. -5 from your rolls when in the presence of your phobia.
Shy: Reroll all 6s when making Song, Speech, or Dance performances
Derpy Eyes: Reroll all 6s when making Appearances and Reputation rolls.
Obsession: Choose a thing or person to obsess over. Reroll all 6s when near near your obsession.
Earth Pegasus: -3 to Wings
Carnivorously Hammy: -4 to all stats in a scene if you don't make a hammy joke at least once in the previous scene.

Periodically the Storyteller may hand out additional cards for winning challenge. These optional cards are either level cards, item cards, bit cards, or cutie mark cards.

Level cards grant a +1 bonus to one score.

Item cards can be handed back to the Storyteller to gain a +2 bonus to one score.

Bit cards are currency. Character start with bit cards equal to their Wealth or *Reputation, whichever it higher.

Once per game, pony body type characters may trade a level card for a cutie mark card. The cutie mark also grants +4 bonus when dealing with a specialty associated with the cutie mark.

Sure, if you were one of the other players, maybe. *Except he kept outrollng them on every little thing. *And he was an enormous Gary Stu; when I had to take a leave of absence, they did some side campaigns and by the end of it... Gary Stu is putting it MILDLY, how many different girlfriends and such he had. *It ruined the campaign for me personally, since the wide disparity of talents and the BS that is BESM D20 meant that I could either make every villain into something he'd kill in ten seconds flat, or everyone else spent the whole time missing.

I always feel bad when I post something without paying my "dues" by commenting on others' works first. But I'm not good at chit-chat, and not giving everypony equal attention seems unfair, while giving everypony equal attention will mean each share approaches zero.

It's actually pretty clever, and if you read my joking 'guide to 4.9' a thread back, it really covers a lot of what they've done. Mostly it's a combination of using the 'Luna bump' without actually using Luna, an amazing movie poster that has some tantalizing images, where most other fics just have archival pictures to rely on, multiple other pictures ready to go to supplement, ones that were actually released before the fic; I'd seen them before the story itself (I'd still hate to see how much they paid for those commissions), and splitting a probably mostly done fic into multiple parts that they released in rapid succession, insuring that their fic rarely leaves the front page for very long.

For a fanfic directed towards a fanbase that has a limited number of venues for expression? That's a pretty clever marketing, and I salute them for that.

Actually, I rather like the feather exchange idea, as well. Now I'm torn. I mean, obviously that's a pegasus-specific thing, but I'm slightly uncomfortable thinking about it in terms of racially separated ceremonies. Because, what would happen if a pegasus fell in love with a unicorn? Maybe feathers or the equivalent are special things above and beyond a more centralized gift? "I love you so much. Please accept this piece of me, to go along with my heart."

Is Equestria the world MLP is set in, or is it the country where the Pony's are the native race? If the former, does that mean Celestia and Luna rule the world? If so, who's helping them, because there's just know way one or two of them can see to everything at once all the time. If it was the latter, how big is Equestria, because unless it's really small, they still need help. Do they have a Pony Nobility? Or Elected Officials? I had honestly hoped that someone would step up and give a clearer account about Midnight's history and appearances. I'm probably the last person to be providing information about the character, given that I'm probably the only one here who hasn't read them all. (Please don't take this as a strike against you, Esper. :smallfrown:) I am quite aware that my information was incomplete, but when someone asks a question I'd rather take the time to answer it to the best of my ability and trust that others will correct me on my gaps of knowledge. Otherwise, I might forget the question or it might be missed by everyone.

Trust me, I knew that you'd written something related to the original Out in the Cold, I just wasn't sure what it was about or how it related.

Well, they seem to imply that the Everfree forest isn't part of Equestria, but I feel like there's some conflicting evidence there. Also, when the dragon was sleeping, the girls were surprised that there was a dragon in Equestria, supporting the idea that it's just a country/kingdom/what-have-you, and then there was another dragon in the Everfree forest and no one seemed terribly surprised by that. So I would go with it being a nation of some sort.

IT has been a long time since I saw the episode, but didn't Twilight fear in Bird in the Hoof that Fluttershy and/or herself would be banished? Unless standard banishment is the moon (In which case I imagine over a thousand years NMM would have some company sooner or later) I imagine it is a country.
Perhaps all countries are ruled by Alicorns, but for some reason they delegate the task of sun/moon raising to Celestia and Luna?

Celestia has used the phrase "What on Earth," which has made people use Equestria as a country rather than a world. We know they've got royals, or at least duchies, what with Prince Blueblood and his being originally intended to be a Duke and all that.

Sorry. Not good at implications and stuff. My inferences lead me to country, not too big, probably pretty small, actually (Ponyville seems a bit like an outlying town, what with the Everfree and what-have-you, but it's just a couple hours' walk from Canterlot). It's possible that municiple leaders (like the Mayor) are elected while others (like certain, obvious ones) have other means.

I would personally postulate that the Everfree Forest is a part of Equestria by geography, but not under Equestrian "control" so to speak. It's obviously extremely different from the rest of Equestria (weather patterns, exotic creatures, etc).

However we have precedence that even if the Princesses don't rule over the area, they at least have some influence, as their old castle resides within the forest. So it may be a piece of Equestria that was warped by Nightmare Moon's original influence?

Actually, I rather like the feather exchange idea, as well. Now I'm torn. I had honestly hoped that someone would step up and give a clearer account about Midnight's history and appearances. I'm probably the last person to be providing information about the character, given that I'm probably the only one here who hasn't read them all. (Please don't take this as a strike against you, Esper. :smallfrown:) I am quite aware that my information was incomplete, but when someone asks a question I'd rather take the time to answer it to the best of my ability and trust that others will correct me on my gaps of knowledge. Otherwise, I might forget the question or it might be missed by everyone.

I, then, divide the rest of the land into some duchies: Hisponia (LAND OF SCIENCE AND SENSUALITY), France, Ponyconia, Ponydanavia, and wherever Appleoosa is.

Beyond that, Celestia doesn't rule directly. There are independent countries outside of it, some of ponies, others of other hoofed mammals (as much as SiuiS likes the idea of a lion country of China, the only creatures we've seen that can talk so far are hoofed mammals, Griffons and Dragons).

I'm not as fond of horse shoes. For one thing, through use, they'd get damaged over time. Also, if it's a special occasions thing, nobody would ever really get to SEE them. And someone else here pointed out a while back that horses don't need horse shoes constantly.

I have never considered the notion that wedding rings are worn so other people can see them, rather than the individuals can feel them.

Why not? We currently have differing wedding traditions based on religion, location, predilection, and even individual family clans have their own traditions.
It may be very meaningful for a unicorn to go through Pegasus wedding rites, and could say a lot about their level of dedication.

I'm biased though. I'm sick to death of the wedding standard being what girls are supposed to dream of, when it's full of outdated symbolism no one even remembers anymore. White dresses aren't a sign of the purity of the bride; theyre a sign of how much you're willing to spend. Same with location and everything else. And all of those symbols are recent, too.

But I'm a clannish folk myself. I dislike too much homogeny, especially in what should be a personalized ceremony.

Well, let's see. Off the top o' me head, there is Chasing Rainbows, Catching Rainbows, the soon-to-be-done *mumblemumble* Rainbows-- what? Ok, fine, I don't know the title beyond inclusion of the word rainbow- Space Oddpony and... One other that I can't recall that isn't Shades of Midnight. And there is, theoretically, a whole bunch of stuff, never released to the public, that isn't pony.

Equestria is a principality, while the planet has been referred to as earth. I generally use the term Equestrian Earth.

You are makin some assumptions that artificially limit things, though.
For one, the sun and moon are directly under control of a single being. The planet could be really small; it wouldn't need to worry about he sun's gravity. Equestrian earth could be a small, nigh-stationary asteroid, kept alive by Celestia's graces. If it's a planet with space at all. It may be a plane with a horizon that falls off to nowhere.

Also, the inhabitants of Equestria don't seem to need all that much ruling. It is a utopia of sorts; bullying and internalizing emotional issues are the biggest drama we've seen. There is very little robbery, killing, fighting. The only war happened to be about as big as a small family feud, and only lasted as long as it did because of outside interference; Little Strongheart and Braeburn looked about able to settle the dispute on their own.

So it's entirely possible, given what we've seen, for Celestia alone to rule a continent-wide nation. Even easier now that Luna is back. Delegation doesn't need to happen because Equestria doesn't need ruling; it needs a papa smurf to problem solve for them, to do the thinking.

It's essentially a personal decal that you can put up on the map. They're usually just static images with something silly or the name of a player. Run up to a wall, press 'T' and the spray is there.

Please don't worry about it. It wasn't that any hooves were stepped on, or that you said or didn't say something that you shouldn't, it was just a general realization/revelation that (again) the things that I write tend to vanish into the night. There's no permanence. Even my fans (and it's so stupid and selfish to complain about these things in light of the fact that I have fans) often forget that I've ever written anything. Anything at all.

Actually, I rather like the feather exchange idea, as well. Now I'm torn. I mean, obviously that's a pegasus-specific thing, but I'm slightly uncomfortable thinking about it in terms of racially separated ceremonies. Because, what would happen if a pegasus fell in love with a unicorn? Maybe feathers or the equivalent are special things above and beyond a more centralized gift? "I love you so much. Please accept this piece of me, to go along with my heart."

It would have to be secured with magic, and even then, that would probably mess with the wing somehow. Furthermore, there isn't much canonical evidence that this is the case, although we haven't seen many (if any) married pegasus.

That's a very charming story you've got there. It's clean and simple, keeping itself within the dream imagery and letting that speak for the dilemma. As soon as you're introduced to Shimmer's conundrum, you get a very clear indication of how she's feeling on the subject, and I think that's to the stories strength.

It's very floaty and charming, and I particularly enjoy the execution of Silver Lining's progressively more frantic attempts to get Shimmer's attention, and the way they chip away at the dream aesthetic until it breaks wide open. The very subtle dress "bondage" was also pretty wonderful. If I do have any suggestions for improvement, I would say that you should put a little more effort into highlighting that chipping aesthetic, such that each appearance of Silver Lining is not only less ignorable, but has a more pronounced physical effect on the Gala. In this way, there is a clear line of imagery leading to the (literal) earth shattering climax, and it feels (while necessarily jarring) less like it happened randomly.

There's certainly no characterization elements with which I am displeased, except to nitpick and mention that Shimmer is, like her namesake, not very keen on the stallions. But I don't actually care about that, so don't lose sleep over it. :smalltongue:

Presumably you're very nearly finished, but as of my reading you were not quite yet. How much more do you plan on adding before calling it a wrap?

Shimmer is the 'real' pony, a pink haired, two winged white pegasus with a scroll and quill cutie mark. She lives alone in Ponyville slipping stories in the mail slot of the library, has a hidden special talent for getting comically tangled in things, and is kidnapped on a weekly basis for various reasons, most of them pertaining to the universe's sense of narrative comedy.

The four winged, silver maned pegasus is Silver Lining, the legendary hero who is the main character of many of Shimmer's best and favorite stories. She's the release from the stresses of the world, the great and powerful (no relation) and self-confident pony that Shimmer wishes she could be.

So, basically, my OC pony bounces back and forth between writing salacious fiction about her neighbors, and mary sue self insert adventure stories. Ye gods. :smalleek:
