What are some of the best ways of avoiding area attacks? So far I have:

Wings of Cover (may or may not work depending on whether that last paragraph is an exception, or a demonstration of lack of system knowledge)

Evasion/Improved Evasion (Reflex)

Spell Turning (limited)

Some of it is a little dependant...Fear is an area attack, as is Frightening Presence, and immunity to [Fear], [Mind Affecting], or high save bonuses vs either would go a long ways to preventing them.

Or are you just refering to Ref based AoE damage spells/effects like Fireball and dragon breath? Abrupt Jaunt or Celerity would work, assuming you could reach the outer edge of the effect.

I'm not worried about Mind Affecting, because that is easy enough to handle. Mainly damaging spells, but other conditions might be problematic.

Basically, this is to Pimp out a caster who spends all of his time polymorphed or shapechanged as a Swarm. That gets him immunity to weapons, and targeted effects (including stuff like disintegrate). Swarms are still vulnerable to AoE's and Mind Affecting. Mind Blank can cure the latter.

Contingency if you have the xp to spare. "When I am targetted by an area effect damaging spell, use teleport to exit the maximum radius of the spell"

Almost all of the best ways to avoid being targeted by spells don't work against area effects: Rod of Absorption, Pale Lavender Ioun Stone, Ring of Spell Turning, Spellblades.

The best counter to area effects is globe of invulnerability, but that only works up to 4th level. After that... maybe try for the DM's Girlfriend template?

1) Ready an action to attack your enemy when they attack you. If it requires Concentration, they're usually boned.

2) Sunder your enemy's spell component pouch or holy symbol, preventing casting.

3) Get access to Immediate Action movement (there's at least 4-5 different ways (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103358)).

4) Spell Resistance.

5) Energy Resistance.

SR is a good bet. Most area spells are SR: Yes.

Are there any cheap ways to get multiple Energy Resistances up?

contingent energy resistance (one spell not contingency + spell) is handy for protecting you from whatever energy damage you run into, though it's only resistance 10
