Kings Landing

The mood around the capitol of the Seven Kingdoms was somber. In the streets people moved slowly, and there was weeping by some of the more devoted of the subjects. The Queen, or rather a Queen, was dead. It was announced in the early hours of the morning, Queen Minisa Targaryen had passed in the dead of the night.

Lord Vyce Timans, Master of Whisperers on the Small Council, pulled his cloak tighter around him. Even the Seven seemed to weep for the Queen, as the downpour had been constant since morning. He cursed as a passing wagon threw mud onto his cloak and the edges of his fine robes. The Small Council had been called by the King, and Timan’s knew from experience that their merciful liege was less than kind to those who kept him waiting- especially on a day such as this.

Without so much as a nod, the guards at the gate to the Red Keep allowed his entrance, and soon enough Vyce opened the door to the council chamber. The other members had already arrived. Lord Damon Marbrand, Master of the King's Coin sat speaking in quietly with Master of Ships Harbert Baratheon. Master of Laws Aenys Targaryen, son of the king sat to the left of the large straight backed chair. The seat to the right was reserved for the Hand of the King, Cyrus Tully, who was currently away at his family estate.

The King entered the room, flanked as always by his pale armored shadows, the Kingsguard. With a gesture, he demanded that his council take their seats. "As you all know, my wife passed in the night. The Maesters say she fell from one of the tower windows... which is a less than acceptable way for a Targaryen to die. You" He indicated his son " Iwant you to draft a official statement to be sent to all of the Great Houses to invite them to the funeral"

Aenys nodded "I will begin at once father"

Aegos turned his eyes onto the rest of his council "The times are bleak my subjects. The Great Houses squabble daily, the land is getting colder, and now one of my beloved wives are dead" the king sighs theatrically "We must raise our subjects spirits. Minisa always loved tournaments..." he trails off looking at Lord Damon.

The young man blinked and nodded his head, obviously going through the calculations in his head "The Treasury certainly can handle a Tournament at the moment my lord, especially with the new taxes that your lordship is planning"

"Excellent" Aegos leaned back in his chair "Now, anything else I should know?"

The Wall

In the far north, the men of the Nightwatch protect against the wildlings and worse from beyond the wall, a great Bastion of Ice that held back the worse of the wild. In the gloom of the night, Karl Cowlfield and Ivan Hunter patrolled slowly, stopping and looking out over the black forest just beyond the light of the flickering torches.

"I'm cold"

Ivan stopped and looked at his companion in amazement " Cold? Really? In the North?"

Karl scowled and spit off the wall " Colder than usual I mean"

The pair resume walking, and Ivan nods "You reckon that winter is on its way?"

Karl was silent for a moment "I hope not."

Ivan shook his head "I hear you. Gods, I would of never stole that chicken if I knew winter would be coming"

Karl snorted in amusement "Yes you would"

Ivan joined his laughter "Yeah, but I would've been more careful about it!"

To all Houses:
In the Name of the Crown, The Golden Dragon, First of his name, King Aegos Targaryen:

In the light of the untimely death of the Minisa Targaryen all houses in the Seven Kingdom are invited to the funeral of the beloved Queen. The House of Whent will be housed at the expense of the crown, but all others must make their own plans.

In the Queen's honor, after the funeral, there will be a Grand Tournament held in her honor. All houses are invited to prove their valor in archery, lance, and melee.

Maegys Targaryen [daughter of Rhaena][12]
Rhaenarys Targaryen [daughter of Minisa][11]
Viserys Targaryen [son of Rhaena][4]
Overview: Over 200 years ago, Aegon the Conqueror from Valyria invaded Westeros with the help of their secret weapon - dragons. Aegon united the Seven Kingdoms under one monarchy. Since then, the Targaryen dragons have died out, but they still rule over the Seven Kingdoms. Over the years, the Targaryens have been praised as wise and fair leaders, but King Aegos is certainly an exception to the trend. A once happy people are now embarrassed, demoralized and discouraged by their King. Aegos is greedy, impulsive, and dishonorable, taking advantage of his all-powerful position. Some houses whisper about an uprising, but many are adamant about loyalty to the crown.

Vassals
I assigned vassals using a random number generator to both make things fair and to make things interesting with variety. I used a dice roller to assign the 12 points of stats for each vassal and then randomly assigned them to PCs. The vassals for the major NPCs are listed under their entry. I limited vassals to having a maximum of 3 reputation, defensive espionage, or morale because I figure they aren't all that useful for their PC lieges and I didn't want anyone having a vassal loved by all of the Seven Kingdoms, loved by all of their people, unable to be infiltrated, and completely useless other than that.

House Carwin

Malus Carwin stood in the rookery of the Eastern Twin, gazing down into the courtyard below. From this height, he could just make out Master-at-Arms Henry and his eldest son, Miach, attempting once again to try to teach Gorman how to properly use a sword and shield. They seem to have gotten to the point, once again, where Gorman would throw down the sword and shield in disgust. Malus chuckled a bit to himself, Gorman had always preferred a bow.

He could also just make out Vanessa standing a bit away, probably laughing at the spectacle. And the bundle in her arms could only be Rose. A smile began to form at that thought. There'd never been a child in all of the kingdoms as adorable as his little Rose...

"My lord, the message from King's Landing?" Malus turned with a start. Maester Brandt stood, the message in hand and a raven perched on his shoulder.

"Yes, of course. Thank you Maester." He walked over and took the message, glancing over it quickly. He had almost forgot why he had come up here in the first place, how had he managed that? Perhaps he really was starting to get old...

He quickly read over the letter. Give me just a moment Maester, I need you to send a response.

His Highness Aegos, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms

We are deeply sorry to hear of the death of Queen Minisa. My eldest son and I will of course attend her funeral.

And while I think I may finally be to old to participate in the tourney, I think my elder son would very much like to enter the lists.

Humbly yours,
Malus Carwin, Lord of the Crossing

House Bareth

As he worked his way up the winding stairs of the rookery tower, Cassus Bareth reflected back on the success of the hunt, in his mind he had etched in the picture of his eldest son Symon calmly setting his great spear as the frenzied huge boar hurtled towards him. A proud smile graced his face at the memory of his bravery, though no doubt the tale would grow even more magnificent as the young man bragged of his feat in the feast to be held till the beast would be undoubtedly twice as big and thrice as ferocious.

Shaking his head he noticed he had reached the maesters study and pushed open the door, at his desk maester Krellin looked up at him, a grave look etched on his face. Rising from his desk, crossing the room towards Cassus he held out a slip of parchement 'My Lord, a raven down from Kings Landing, word from the Iron Throne regarding the Queen.'

'Hmmm...' reaching out and taking the message he unraveled the parchment 'Dark wings, dark words indeed maester Krellin. We'll be needing to put together a suitable retinue for the journey to Kings Landing.'

Message to House Targaryen:
To His Grace Aegon Targaryen, First of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms

House Barath sends it's condolences for the untimely death of Her Grace, the Queen Minisa, all the realms undoubtedly weep alongside Your Grace at her loss. Your loyal servants in House Barath will journey to Kings Landing with all haste for the funeral and tourney to be held in her honour.

Hmm. A funeral and a tournament? Differing tastes, surely.

Lord Joran Argenta was pacing back and forth in the small room. After a moment, he sat down next to the papers.

Well. It is an opportunity, at least.

to Targaryen:

His Highness Aegos, Lord of the Iron Throne

Our condolences for your loss. I will personally be attending the funeral, of course.

Yours,
Lord Joran Argenta, of Silverhill

to Baratheon:

Lady Cyrenna Baratheon, of Storm's End

I trust we will both be attending the funeral in King's Landing. I believe the Tournament afterward would present a good opportunity to discuss privately some interesting matters that we might both have a stake in.

Yours,
Lord Joran Argenta, of Silverhill

to Lannister:

Lord Titus Lannister,

Our two families have old and strong ties. And the wealth of our lands and castles is also partially dependant on each other. Perhaps we should discuss some arrangements about how to make better use of the situation and hopefully build upon the wealth and power of both of us.

Yours,
Lord Joran Argenta

The Varangs’ subjects were gathered around a balcony in the courtyard of the Dreadfort, one of the most fearsome strongholds in the North and all of Westeros. Most of the Varang family stood solemnly at the balcony, and Lord Rudolf gave a speech:

“We are approaching a difficult time in Westeros. Her Majesty the Queen, wife of the great King Aegos, has passed. Winter approaches. But rest assured that through the harshness to come, we, the Varang, will stand firm, and stand strong. For the monarchy, for the Faith, and for the greatness of Westeros and the North!”

In the courtyard of the settlement square, some of the North’s finest sculptors unveil a statue of the Targaryen King and the late Queen. As the Varang and their subjects applaud, the Septon Conrad Snow blesses the statue in the name of the Seven. Shortly afterwards, a military parade of the Dreadfort's guard ensures. Varang soldiers march around the castle both to honor the monarchy and display force, both for their lords and as a warning to any who dare defy the Varang. The sound of stomping boots echoes off the mountains, and is a clear reminder of the Varang's motto: We March In Step.

To the Targaryens
Your Grace,
The whole North is distraught to hear of the Queen’s passing, and the House of Varang wishes to offer its most sincere condolences. I will attend the funeral along with a retinue and my the two eldest of my sons, Wulfric and Ferdinand, as well as our House Septon, Conrad Snow, who, if Your Majesty deems it appropriate, would be honored to participate in the religious service. My sons and I would be honored to compete at the festival in her honor—Wulfric and Ferdinand are unsurpassed swordsmen. I myself would be honored to participate in jousting for the dearest Queen’s honor and Your Grace’s entertainment.
Sincerely Yours,
Lord Rudolf Varang, Lord of the Dreadfort

Everyone:
Could people please mark the espionage level of their conversation? It makes this so much easier. Thanks.

House Flint

Rayon pushed off the wall behind him, walking up to his father, his hands held out in a conciliatory, calming gesture which, coincidentally, also displayed his new kid-skin gloves.
"Lord Father, we have to go. It is the King's Tourney, for the dead queen. Not to go would be an enormous insult. Your brother can hold the castle and the lands while we are gone."
The Lord of the Cape stopped in his tracks for a second. For half an hour now, Lord Rakhar Flint had been ranting, first at his Maester, then at his wife, now at his sons. He grunted.
"It is a plot, I tell you. Reed and Muldoch and Manderly are all plotting against us. And Stark. We are surrounded by Northmen, and they like us not, no matter how many times we try and prove our loyalty in their eyes, to them, we remain Ironmen. I can not leave my castle alone."
Rayon sighed silently. He knew that when his father was in such a mood, he would not stop for hours. Eventually, he would see reason. Eventually.

***

It was a short train. Father had insisted that his younger son, despite being thirteen years would remain on the Cape, with his mother and uncle. At least he had allowed Rayon to come to prove himself in the Tourney. Morna was coming too, her mother had insisted. The girl was sixteen and, when most of her cohorts were married already, not even promised to anyone. High time for her to find a suitor at court.

Note:
Rayon will enter the Joust. Morna will enter the Archery competition, if women are allowed at all.

House Storris

House Targaryen
His most Excellent Majesty, The Golden Dragon, First of his name, King Aegos Targaryen,

The love we hold for you and your house compels us to mourning. I and my eldest son will depart at once to King's Landing that we may share in your grief.

Moreover, we will surely take part in the tournament you have called, to give fitting honor to the name of your queen.

House Hightower
We see your poverty the mockery of your name made by those who do not to proper honor to your legacy and good work. We are dispatching our son Rhombar to you, to Oldtown, to discuss matters of import to us both.

House Tyrell
May the grace of the Seven be with you and yours.

We wish to make an offer, an agreement of mutual benefit. Give us leave and honor to take over the naval duties of the South, so that you may focus wholly on your armies. In this way, you will be secure from the mechanization of those around you, and we shall be your shield against the dangers of the sea.

In exchange, we will provide the merchants of your lands preferential rates and position in the trade fleets we are working to assemble.

The pride of House Storris’ navy was a mighty vessel. Her name was Sunchaser, her prow was a carven sea eagle, and her timbers were white. She was massive yet nimble, the result of centuries of innovation, epiphany, and trial. More than a hundred feet in length, its keel was like a blade, its four masts, two on either side, bore many great white sails.

It was a warship, and well made for its function. Lord Stromveron, patriarch of his house, was master of the ship, and was now charged with the honor of bearing his brother in law to King’s Landing. About it were yet others, for the Storris were not one’s to waste any opportunity.

The center-masted trade carvels and a host of smaller escorts all sat in Dawnsport’s deepwater harbor behind the gleaming white seawalls. Soon, the first of the Storris tradefleets would depart, carrying fine woods, books, red wine from the hills of the Arbor, and many other goods besides. It was now in the Almighty’s hands if this venture would bring wealth or ruin to House Storris.

With them they bore another treasure, the ashes of a Storris, wheather lord or lady or child was unknown, who's ashes were to be released to the sea. For that was there way, when non living remembered their name, their ashes were scattered. The place of the living was not to dwell ever in the shadow of the dead, but to delight in the gifts they had left behind.

Almost lost amid the splendor of the white ships a small yacht also departed, heading for Whispering Sound.

Meanwhile, in the North...

Varangs Combat Banditry and Piracy

The North has long been a rough and chaotic land. Pirates sail the coasts, and bandits waylay travelers and attack farms. Lord Rudolf Varang will no longer stand by in the face of such criminality.

He sends the Varangian military, under the command of his second son Ferdinand Varang, and led by Hill Tribe trackers, scouts, and woodsmen, to find bandit camps. They systematically attempt to root out and slaughter any bandits found in Varang lands.

Captured bandits are escorted to Widow's Watch, the seat of House Bolton, with a message:

They are of no use to us. Do what you will.

-Ferdinand Varang

The Varang will not tolerate lawlessness in their territory. They would like to work with House Nightsnow to eliminate piracy in the North through an orchestrated naval sweep of Northern islands and the coast, to ferret out pockets of piracy and bring to them a bloody justice.

We indeed have the quantities you desire, however, such common woods are hardly fit for the use of a Great house such as yourself. Our trade fleet is departing for King's Landing even as this message is dispatched. They have with them several quantities of material, including the wood you have requested.

Yet there are finer woods more in line with your prestige and status. The fragrant cedars of Arbor as well as mahogany, rosewood, and others. If you truly desire only what you have specified the merchants accompanying the fleet will be glad to negotiate. Moreover, passage to King's Landing can also be arranged as well. The voyage by sea is much quicker then by land and with the escorts much safer.

House Carthis
An interesting offer. We are some distance from each other and it would seem that our goods would sell well at your ports and vice versa. We have already begun establishing a trade fleet, to bring our products, both material and finished, to more diverse markets. Perhaps we can work together in this.

OOC: PM level
I have spoken with the GMs. My tradefleet will serve as a stat growth platform for others. At the EoT include the use of Econ in the production of trade goods for use with the Storris trade fleets and you will gain more in return then you would normally.

House Hightower
Will send a PM in a sec.

House Tyrell
We understand. The duties of Warden of the South are important to all Westros. We have come to a realization recently, that while our island is bountiful such bounty will not endure forever. We would like to begin importing raw materials in the form of stone, fine sand, other assorted goods.

The artisans of the Arbor have a great deal of skill and are able to produce goods of excellent quality and beauty.

In exchange we would provide you with discounts on finished products. Additionally, we offer a partnership with our tradefleets, which we hope will soon unite Westros in a great stability and prosperity conferring network.

GM
We extend the offer of allowing them to produce trade goods to be carried by our fleets, that they spend econ thing you mentioned in PM.

There is also another matter we would be interested in discussing. We have encountered some small difficulty in trade to the mainland due to a lack of a receptive port. Would you be willing to negotiate the ceding of an appropriate town or city to us in exchange for something of ours you consider of equal worth and a reduction on tariffs to go along with it?
OOC: Which I assume would provide me with an Econ bonus of some kind.

Lord Erik was at the entrance to the keep, watching with pride as his boys sparred in the yard. They were both well past the time to be wed, but he had yet to find suitable wifes for him; everyone who has offered a daughter or niece has been to lowborn for his taste. His son's deserved the best, as does his daughter who has flowered into a truly beautiful young girl. She was looking more and more like her mother everyday!

The serving boy Robert Sand approached him, and indicated that the Maester had just received ravens. Proceeding up to the Maester's Rookery, he read the letters and wrote out the appropriate responses.

You come to the table with bold offers, Lord Storris. Is Old Town not a receptive port for your trading needs? I will ask Lord Hightower to lower his docking charges for Storris ships, but I am not eager to cede parts of my land to anyone.

Trade with other parts of the Kingdoms would be beneficial to us. We would be willing to specialize and produce goods for trade. We already export a great deal of food to the rest of Westeros, but more trade never hurt anyone.

But Daaaaaaaaaaaad, I want to go to King's Landing! Why can't I go? Gorman was begging completely shamelessly now, probably half a step from kneeling at his father's feet. But Malus was not having any of it.

"I said no, Gorman. And stop that, that isn't how a Carwin should behave!" He instantly regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth. He'd said them much more sharply than he'd meant, and Gorman was close to tears now. "I'm sorry Gorman, but I need you to stay here." He bent down, so he could look his youngest son in the eye. "Your Uncle, your brother and I are all going, so someone has to stay and watch over the Twins. There must always be a Carwin here to protect the Riverlands, and for now that falls to you. Do you understand?" Gorman looked at the ground as he nodded.

"It's alright, it'll just be a few days, a week at the most. We'll be back before you know it."

Gorman looked up, "Just a few days?"

Lord Rakhar Flint sends Ravens to:

Identical messages to the Houses Murdoch and Vailan, House Manderly, as well as their vassals Ryswell, Mormont and Tallhart (Esp. +++++-)

Lords and Nobles of the North, protectors of Blazewater Bay, the Saltspear, and the Stony Shore.

The Ironmen of the Grey Isles are building their fleet again, as they have for thousands of years. Their culture is built upon the idea of shedding good Northman blood. Can we trust them to keep the King's peace, when they have a fleet the size of all ours combined, and a lust for our gold, our women, and our land? When winter is coming, from whence will the Ironmen bring their food?

I say we must stand together against the Ironmen. We must act as one Fleet, as one structure, as one family, for we are Lords of the North, and we know that in winter, those who stand alone, perish.

Perhaps we could meet and unite our forces on the march down the King's road to King's Landing, to discuss this matter further and more privately?

With your leave, House Flint wishes to unite the fleets of the western coasts of the North into one force against the Ironmen, so we can stand against them united. To build a defensive fleet the likes of which the world has never seen.

Hyperion dictates another two letters to Maester Lumin. Lumin is a brilliant but absent minded Dornishman in his early forties, he scribbles furiously as his Lord's low onerous tone races ahead.
Hyperion looks out the window at his children assumbled in the courtyard below. He can tell simply by their body language what the boys are discussing. Bartholomew and Riddick are discussing heatedly and for the countless time which one of them is going to win the archery. Louisea stood to one side, he was sure she was rolling her eyes. He echoed the sentiment. The boys were good, he had seen to that. In hindsight he reflected that teaching them modesty as well would have been an excellent decision.
He finished his letters and thanked Lumin and dismissed him. He worries about the archery. Once Hyperion Highflower was the truest arrow this side of the Neck, with the famed Lavender Bow he had ruled the archery for almost two decades before retiring at 35. The Lavender Bow was always his preferred weapon, the family Valyrian sword Steelrose always sat uneasily in his hand.
He sighed as he remembered his time in the lists. It had just been another way for the northerns to laugh at him. The bastard could neither lance nor survive the melee, he was only a bowman. The fact he was the best bowman they would ever see was lost on them.
The bastard only excelled at the only competition the peasantry were allowed. He frowned, that part had always annoyed him. That peasants were allowed only made it more difficult surely? Some of the best archers he had faced were peasants. When you're two standing alone as the target gets moved to 140 meters you don't give a damn about bloodlines. He had respected some of them a damn sight more than the nobility assembled for the tourney. They were better winners and better losers.

His eyes however were not what they once were. He knew he would not survive the distance. He decided to enter anyway, remembering the first time he had won the silver arrow from Austin Stone, called Trueshot. The old man's eyes were failing him then. He still stood the line, still scored perfectly until the target reached 80 meters. He allowed the new champion to beat him rather than simply retire. Hyperion had felt guilt for years as a result of his decision. It was Rikkon's first tourney it was a good time to finally allow someone the same honour as Trueshot allowed him. He hoped with all his heart it would be one of the boys. They were very good, but still he worried...

"A tournament? Well, at least Ser Aeric and I can enter the melee. Isn't as though we can do anything about the other categories."

"This is true. I doubt the King would be amused to see the heir of my house flinging rocks at his archery butts, although I'm sure you would do well. Slinging hasn't been considered part of 'proper' warfare in the kingdoms for some time."

"And you'll be abstaining from the melee, my lord?"

"Yes. I'm not an ancient man, but I'm older. In my day I was good, and still am. But the price that comes with that is every new, young fighter looking to prove himself by bringing you down. That's attention I can do without. My name isn't renowned among the kingdoms like some, but I'm sure a few petty lordlings would see my helm on the field and go out of their way to arrange a meeting. Such seekers of glory aren't always... proper in their tournament fighting."

Malus stood up and turned to face his wife, Vanessa. The worry was obvious on her face, and only decreased slightly when he stepped forward and embraced her tightly. "We'll just be gone a week or so, no more. You needn't worry for us."

I know, but I will anyway. They seperated, but Malus held her hands in his as she continued. You know how the roads are, be careful. The bandits may not know who you are, and they probably won't care...

"I doubt there's a bandit between here and King's Landing who doesn't know of Malus Carwin. I'm told many outlaws still fear him for the stories that came out of the battle at Seagard all those years ago." Desmond Carwin walked up, smiling brightly as he almost always did. "Well brother, are we ready to go?"

Malus couldn't help breaking into a smile of his own as he took his brother's hand. Yes, we are. Miach got impatient and wanted to ride ahead a few minutes, but the rest of us were just waiting for you.

Well then what are we waiting for?" Desmond gave a short bow to Vanessa, and walked toward the horses. As he did, Master-at-Arms Henry Pratchet walked past him in the opposite direction. They nodded at each other in acknowledgement as they passed, but said nothing.

"My lord, the horses are ready and everything is prepared." He glances over his shoulder at the men-at-arms who had already mounted up. "Are you sure that twelve is enough men my lord? With the roads as they are..."

"We'll be fine Henry, most of the trip will be on the King's Road anyway, so it shouldn't be a problem. And besides, we can travel faster with fewer men." Henry nodded, but didn't press the issue further. The two men walked over to over to the horses and Malus mounted up. "The Twins are under your care Henry. Keep them safe. He glances over towards Vanessa and Gorman and watched them wave goodbye to him as Henry replied, "As always, milord."

Malus turns his horse so that he's looking at Desmond and his men, who are waiting for his word. "What are you waiting for? Lets go! We have to catch up with Miach after all." Fourteen horsemen ride out of the gate of the Eastern Twin, racing down the road toward the King's Road.

But to answer your question, yes. Miach will be there, as will my brother Desmond. I believe they both intend to enter the lists in lance and melee. They want me to as well, but I fear that I'm beginning to grow to old for such things.

Also, I received a letter from Lord Tully recently. I noticed he used "mysterious" to describe Minisa's death. What did he mean by that?

True, the northmen were not their friends. But he would bet no other lord would take a hundred foot and a hundred horse with them to King's Landing. It was a folly, it would make them seem scared in front of the other lords. As if they had to hide a weakness.
He and his sister had taken three outriders with them and rode in the van. "I am Providence"
D Espionage: ++++-

To House Targaryen

I am saddened by the news of such a grievous death and would fly to Kingslanding at once but for my own frail health, which cannot withstand the battering of the seas.

In our stead we are sending our dear nephew and heir, Ser Charles Ulmstead, lately the ward of the Arryns. He is a brave and dexter knight and we are sure that he will heap much honor upon the arms of House Ulmstead.

To House Nightsnow of Skagos from House Ulmstead of the Sisters

To the honorable head of House Nightsnow, Lord of Skagos from Lord Barnabus Ulmstead of the Sisters, Keeper of the Silver Key, sends his regards.

"I am the power of God and I am Providence, what dost thou wish that I shall give thee?"

There is much that is in our power to give you. But what we offer now is the Wildlings. Long our honest merchant have plied our wares among them and long have the vicious savages cheated us out of our honest commerce and attacked our sworn men at the slightest provocation.

There must be an end of this. No man cheats us. We shall set up the greatest marketplace that the wildlings have ever seen, it will bring them from their mountain hovels with gold clinking on their arms.

Mayhaps, that would be a good time for your ships to come in and set the wildlings to the sword. Then we can recover what the wildlings have cheated and stolen from us and you can win a great victory over the murderers and raiders that lurk beyond the Wall.

Long may both our Houses prosper.

Behind the gates of the silver key in the high solar of the Ulmsteads, Lord Barnabas was holding court. No minstrels played, but only the crash of the wild surf against the tower. Before him lay a bowl of well-spiced crab soup, and a merchant with rusted chains.

“You ran from me, my money still in your pockets, thinking I would give chase. But you left your treasures behind.” Next to Barnabas stood a young girl, eyes pointed down with what should be fear, her arm covered by the Lords long fingers and the skin that lay between them. “I know you would come back, and so you have.”

The merchant no longer howled and pulled at his chains, that was long in the past for him. He stared blankly at Ulmstead. “What would you have of me?” he whispered.

"What should concern you is what you shall have from me. I am Providence. I have the power of God in my hands. What dost thou wish that I shall give three?” He intoned the old words, already knowing the answer. An Ulmstead should always know the answer to any question they ask.

“The girl, please my lord.”

And Ulmstead told him what he needed to know, a tale of blood and treason. As he spoke, his webbed fingers dragged themselves along the fine hair of the whimpering girl. “Do all this and you shall have your daughter returned to you in three years time and a clutch of golden dragons besides. Try to steal back your life from me and I will send this girl to Old Volantis and tears will never be far from her cheeks.”

The merchant was cowed but not yet broken, “They say that dragons may buy a man’s silence for a time, but his death will buy it forever.”

For the first time, a smile crept across Lord Barnabas’ lips. “It is not your silence that I want, there will be such tales that you will tell…”

My soldiers are well-trained in keeping out any undesirables and my most loyal servants will be in good position to observe and intercede against any schemes in the King’s Landing, should it be your wish.

[I’d like to use my Def. Espionage action to improve security during the Tournament – a temporarily boost to the Def. Espionage of House Targaryen in the King’s Landing only. Of course should the King agree, I will be in a better position to spy on him, by my House is affiliated with his, so perhaps a measure of trust will be extended].

[What’s implied in ‘’suffering no traitors’’ is of course, should his majesty wish someone dead, while keeping his hands clean, he has but to send that man to House Rosby’s lands].

To Malus Carwin, Lord of the Crossing

In fact, Bethany is no longer being courted by Eddard. It appeared that the two were not fit for each other, and Bellena has begun spending more time in Riverrun with Eddard. Her son Ben is also Eddard's nephew has created a good bond between the two.

So I see that as a bright opportunity for Bethany and Miach? Don't you?
Aliser Whent

Lyle sat quietly in his room alone. It had been a rough journey, and he had only arrived early thanks to the Gods and a good steed. He was alone in King's Landing, a scary thought, but he had visited his twin nephew's and his niece this evening. It was a sad thought, his sister's children no longer having their mother. But they were not motherless entirely, for Rhaena appeared to have taken the children in as her own.

Both Baeron and Daeron were Targaryens, there was no doubt about it. Their sense of entitlement was strong, and they worried very little about much else apart from themselves. They seemed to be a shifty team, with such elegance and charm, yet very sly.

Rhaenarys appeared to be very much like her mother. It brought tears to Lyle's eyes to see such a splitting image of his sister. She had grown up so much since their last visit. She seemed very distant from the rest of the Targaryen family, and Lyle worried that without Minisia, she would be quickly and easily forgotten.

It was nearing midnight when Lyle finally got word from Aliser. His father was safe, on his way, and had told Lyle that he was going to be the Whent fighting in the tournament unless Lyle felt otherwise. Lyle was well trained in battle, he was currently the head of their defensive forces and had fought, and won many a time. But he was grieving, and already was slightly upset that his sister's death was resulting in a joyous tournament for the benefit of the King. Regardless, he knew it was in his sister's honor this tournament was taking place. She loved them so, and Lyle knew she'd want him to partake.

Lyle picked up his sword and began to shine it. He stopped feeling so alone in King's Landing. He was safe with his sword.

Malus Carwin

The riders of House Carwin arrived in King's Landing just at dusk, with no fanfare. Just as Malus Carwin liked it. The fifteen riders made their way slowly through the winding streets. The people brave or foolish enough to be on the streets after dark mostly stayed out of the rider's way as they headed toward the Street of Sisters to an higher end Inn where Malus and Desmond had stayed before.
________________

Several hours later, Malus Carwin sat in his room at the inn, contemplating his shield. The Sea Wall was ancient, easily older than House Carwin. And it showed. The blue-green metal was scratched, worn, and dented. But one thing was peculiar. On no surface of the shield was there an obvious patch. Even on close examination, it seemed that this shield had never once been pierced.

It was a strange thing to be thinking about in the small hours of the morning, but that wasn't the only thing he was thinking about. He was also thinking about how disappointed Miach had sounded when he'd found out the Malus wouldn't be competing in the Melee. The excuse, and it sounded like an excuse to even him now, that he was too old hadn't changed the boy's mind. It was his first tourney, and he'd been hoping to fight alongside his father.

So Malus sat, staring at his shield. "Well, perhaps I could strap this on one more time..."

End of Turn 1

House Carthis

Lord Vanis stands at the harbor, watching as a great fleet of trade vessels approaches flying the crest of House Storris. As the ships dock, fine goods of all southern production are unloaded off the ships: wine from House Redwyne, delicate cloths made in the Reach, and even fine jewelry from Dorne. Several great houses, particularly House Carthis and Storris, have cooperated to found a great and intricate trade network. House Carthis has begun construction on a large road network to connect their port to other towns inland while House Storris has connected several southern ports using their trade fleet.

The Arbor

Word of the Arbor's riches through the trade network had not fallen on deaf ears. While ships of the Arbor were predisposed, a great fleet of unidentified longships escorted an army of raiders to rob House Storris. Unopposed, the raiders were able to steal some of the Arbor's riches. While they could have taken much more, the raider attack only took what it could before the army of the Arbor was able to react. They were gone as quickly as they had arrived.

Lannisport

A similar tale was happening simultaneously at Lannisport near Casterly Rock. An equally large group of unidentified longships moved in to raid the rich port of the Lannisters. The longships took what they came for and again quickly departed, but a few were intercepted by Lannister forces. Several ships were prevented from leaving the harbor and House Lannister saved some of their goods from being stolen while taking a few of the raiders captive. They have placed a ransom on the raiders hoping that their leader claims them and they can discover who is responsible.

Throne Room, King's Landing

Lord Vyce Timans stood to the right of the Iron Throne with the rest of the Small Council, watching the King receive lords from all over the Seven Kingdoms. The stout Lord Duram of Bar Emmon knelt and looked up at the King as he opened the present he'd been presented with. Opening the ornate wooden box, King Aegos lifted a pair of ragged undergarments from it. Confusion turned to rage on the King's face as he glared down at Lord Duram.

"How dare you mock me, Lord Duram, right after the funeral of my beloved wife. I knew you were stupid, but I at least thought you loyal. Guards!"

Several gold cloaks moved to seize Lord Duram. "Bu-but! There must be a mistake. That is not the gift I brought for you, Your Grace!" the boy lord continued to protest as he was dragged from the throne room.

Tournament Grounds, King's Landing

The sound of hooves grew closer as Lord Damon Marbrand watched the two horses gallop towards each other. Benjen Stark, heir to his father's house, and Thomas Argenta raced towards each other, lances pointed. Benjen Stark shifted his lance at the last second and succeeded in shoving Thomas off his horse. Thomas cried out from the dirt, nursing his arm which was bent in an unnatural direction. He was helped to his feet and escorted away from the grounds as the crowd politely applauded the joust. The sound of an old man's laughter was audible over the applause.

"Father, please!" pleaded a young, beautiful girl that happened to be Victoria Rosby. "It's not an appropriate time!" The poor girl's father had become senile in his old age, and she was a single woman trying to maintain his lordship and dignity. The old man continued to laugh, accidentally spitting in his daughter's face. Lord Damon pitied the sweet girl.

Later in the joust...

Throughout the day, many knights and lords had proved themselves and others had been equally embarrassed on the lists. During the semifinals, Alric Vailan, an underdog from the cold north, was unseated by the crowd favorite, Ser Rikkard Hornridge. Ser Rikkard represented House Rosby. The house had hosted its own competition of sorts for their knights to determine who would represent the noble house at the tournament. His triumph over his fellow knights was understandable given his success during the joust.

Ser Rikkard's opponent was Desmond Carwin, younger brother to Lord Malus Carwin of the Twins. He defeated Gregory Gargalen from Dorne in his previous match. The two knights were about to begin their seventh tilt. Ser Rikkard rode a large destrier versus the small, quick courser ridden by Desmond. Their squires each handed them new lances and the riders urged their horses forward. The thunderous hooves were interrupted by a loud cracking sound as their lances broke on each others' shields. Desmond Carwin had clearly been knocked off balance and was unable to keep his seat, falling into the dirt.

OOC:
Jousts tend to be the most important events at a tournament, so House Rosby wins + wealth and - reputation.

Melee

The joust had been an obviously popular event, but a surprisingly larger crowd had come to watch the melee event. Earlier in the melee, there had been a brief pause in the fighting to allow the crowd to carry Ser Charles Ulmstead off the field. Having lost his helm, the heir to House Ulmstead had suffered a serious blow to the head by a knight riding by on his horse. He was now being treated by the Maesters of the city.

It was down to nine men. Ser Rikkard Hornridge had again been a crowd favorite, largely due to his success in the joust. However, he had been a target early on, also due to his success in the joust. The other favorite to win was Ser Jeor Grovton, a large bear of a man who wields a warhammer and serves as Master-at-Arms for House Argenta. His large stature and renowned experience made him a formidable foe on the field. As Ser Jeor's blows caused Loras Tyrell to yield, the three still-standing Carwins defeated Lancel Lannister.

On the other side of the field, Lyle Whent shone in his armor as he traded blows with the two young Gargalen boys teaming up on him. Lyle had performed brilliantly, driven by his emotion to bring honor to his late sister. However, the Gargalen boys finally forced Lyle to yield.

The last six competitors came together, the Carwins making quick work of the Gargalen boys. Ser Jeor knocked Lord Malus Carwin off his feet with his hammer, leaving just he, Desmond Carwin, and Micah Carwin standing. Desmond would not settle for second place again. The two Carwins sent a flurry of attacks against the knight. Despite his size, Ser Jeor was quite nimble and managed to hold his ground for a while. At the end of the day, Desmond Carwin knocked Ser Jeor off his feat with the help of his nephew and they won gold and honor for House Carwin.

OOC:
House Carwin wins - wealth and - reputation.

Shortly after the melee, Eddard Tully is seen running up to Lyle Whent. Nervously, he says, "My lord... I can only imagine that your grief on this day matches that of the valor you've displayed in the tournament. I know it may be an inappropriate time, but I must take the opportunity of being with you in person to ask... will you give me your daughter's hand to marry? Bellena is a beautiful girl from a noble family, and my father and I could not be more excited about the idea of joining our families."

Archery Range

Despite the smaller number of entrants, the archery tournament displayed perhaps the most exceptional abilities of the competition. House Highflowers entered four men into the contest, including a man they hired named Dagoth Gunthor. Gunthor was famed in King's Landing for having won several previous archery tournaments, so he was the favorite to win. Strangely, Lord Hyperion Highflowers shot better than his hired bow and surprised the crowd with his amazing precision despite being one of the older competitors. Darius Stromveron outperformed them all, though. He represents House Storris and wields their family heirloom - a great Valyrian bow. His precision won the archery contest for his house.

OOC:
House Storris wins - wealth and - reputation.
Tournament Details:
I determined the victors using dice rolls, but predetermined bonuses were given to the results based on descriptions.

Some interesting results...
House Carwin had the best rolls overall, by far. Particularly Desmond Carwin.

Darius Stromveron had the highest roll in the entire tournament and good fluff to match it.

Ser Charles Ulmstead somehow managed to roll all 1's. That's why he suffered a serious blow to the head. Thomas Argenta had nearly as bad of a roll for the joust, so he broke his arm.

Great Sept of Baelor, King's Landing

"... several of these 'red priests' have approached your noble houses about their false god. In the name of the King, I label all those who choose to abandon their faith in the name of this god to be blasphemers," spoke the High Septon.

Lord Domeric Manderly stood nearby, watching the High Septon speak to the crowd. His young page, Rickard Stark, came running up to the lord, a letter in his hands.

"My lord, a raven from White Harbor."

Reading the letter, Lord Domeric's heart leapt into his throat. "... has been murdered. It was not subtle. The assassin stabbed your son in his sleep and made sloppy work of escape. Your knights pursued the killer to Karstark lands, but he was lost in the woods." Lord Domeric did his best to keep his composure as he led Rickard Stark out of the crowd to his quarters. "We have to get back to White Harbor, Rickard. Please let my guards know immediately."

After Lord Domeric and the young page left the crowd, King Aegos replaced the High Septon on the steps to address the gathered crowd. "I thank you all for coming to honor the life of my late wife. I would like to take this opportunity to address the many lords who have gathered for the tournament. First, I will be beginning the process of finding a new wife. You are required to send your daughters to be evaluated by me before leaving the city." Mumbles began to come from the disgruntled crowd. "Additionally, taxes will be raised throughout the Seven Kingdoms to cover the costs of this tournament and to raise security throughout the Kingdoms."

"You're mad!" cried a stray voice from the crowd as it grew louder and more unhappy.

"I'm the King," muttered King Aegos as he was escorted off the steps by his gold cloaks.

OOC:
A tax of - temporary wealth will be charged on each house at the end of each turn for as long as the King says. You can choose whether you obey his commands, of course.

The Vale of Arryn

Though Lord Elbert Arryn was at the Queen's tournament, his men were not idle. A combined force of House Arryn, House Coldwater, House Royce, and all their bannermen were marching through the mountain passes that lead to House Farland. They had officially declared House Farland to be unsuitable to rule over Gulltown and their portion of the Vale. Previously vassals to House Farland, House Grafton has seized Old Anchor and Iron Oaks already. They ready to march on Runestone, located next to Gull Town. The small fighting force the Farlands keep is waiting to defend Gull Town from their enemies. House Arryn has declared that House Grafton will take over governance of the parts of the Vale previously ruled by House Farland. Dishonorable actions would not be tolerated in their lands.

OOC:
Ninjabob (House Farland) and Madwand (House Nightsnow) have dropped out of the game. They have become NPCs.

For the most part, they are good-natured people, but they have a tendency to seek personal gain through sometimes underhanded means. Despite being well-liked by most, they are trusted by few.

King's Landing

Private Meeting with Lannisters:

"Thank you for receiving me. " Lord Joran Argenta nods politely as equals. "I hope you have time - there is a few things I would like to discuss."

"First of all, it is clear to me that the... current state of the Kingdom is not quite what it might have been, or once was." Careful words from a careful man, but both of the Lords in the room were well versed in such wordplay and understood each other's meaning perfectly.

"Especially with the most recent news from the Throne. Dreadful. Of course our policy will be to watch and wait, for now. However, there is something to be said for action so long as your allegiance is secure.

Would you be interested in a marriage between our families to tighten our ancestral bonds? My daughter Sari is but a year younger from your boys, who by the way handled themselves well in the tournament. She has grown into a fine young woman, if I might say so myself.

A loyal friend is an important thing at times like these. And perhaps it might bring opportunities for us both to expand our holdings... our House has long lamented our lack of a port to call our own."

Confident that Titus Lannister would understand exactly what he was proposing, Joran leaned back to await his response.

Private Meeting with Baratheon:

"Greetings, good Lady, and thank you for welcoming me."

This meeting had a different tone. A little food and drink, a comfortable table near a fireplace, people moving in and out though keeping a respectable distance from the two nobles.

"As for the purpose of my visit, I will keep it simple. House Bar Emmon has insulted our noble family, as they have yours, for too often and too long. Our honour is stained as our hands have been tied by their favour with the Targaryens. However, the strained situation in the Kingdom and now this latest debacle have alienated them. House Bar Emmon currently has no protector, and I believe we should remind them why they should keep good relations to older and more noble Houses.

Would you be willing to work with me and regain the part of wealthy Stormlands lost to their greed?"

House Storris

By raven from the Arbor: Lady Storris has given birth to three healthy children. Two daughters and a son have joined their brothers as heirs to the Arbor and its bounty. As custom dictates their naming ceremony will take place on the Arbor one year from the day of their birth.

House Targaryen
My lord, most glorious and honored protector of the Realm and king of the people of Westros,

As you know I am without any daughters of proper age. While my wife was with child when I departed the Arbor, the children she has given me are not of a suitable maturity, and may not survive to reach adulthood.

House Lannister
It appears we have an enemy in common. Would you perhaps allow some of our experts in interrogation 'question' a few of your captives?

We would also be interested in wiping out this scourge together.

House Lannister - House Argenta [EspD: Private Meeting!]
"Hmm.." Titus Lannister thought out loud. "Well, I would certainly agree with you that something needs to be done about this problem that is our king. I'm only thankful that I do not have a daughter to give him. The taxes are enough. I would also agree that having friends during these times will be necessary to get anything done. Naturally, marriages are the cement that hold alliances and deals together. I'd like to hear more of what you have in mind before we proceed with joining our families."

Titus walked to the window in his chambers, looking out on the yard. His boys sat together in the courtyard, keeping to themselves. They were oblivious to the longing stares that their handsome Lannister features attracted. "Which of my boys were you thinking?"

House Baratheon - House Argenta [EspD: Private Meeting!]
Cyrenna Baratheon chuckled to herself at Lord Joran's offer. "My Lord, you underestimate our hatred for Bar Emmon. Their green lord is but a boy and a greedy, gluttonous one as well."

"By right, most of House Bar Emmon's lands should belong to the Baratheons. I must hear how you would intend to divide the land and spoils before I agree to planning anything significant."

House Targaryen - House Storris [EspD +++++ ++]
Excuses. I guess you're exempt.

Private Meeting with Lannister:

Lord Joran steps to the window as well, though keeping a polite distance to Titus.

"I would never so much as presume. But I have noticed that she has given some glances in the direction of your namesake. Handsome young lad, he is."

Again, more said than spoken. Argenta wishes for an alliance, yes, but not unification. Even a slight nod to Lannister's old heritage and higher status - it is quite a lot from proud Joran Argenta.

"As for what I would be planning for the other matter. Like I wrote earlier, there are some matters that require privacy, and some that require secrecy. This one would be the latter. Perhaps you would be so kind as to arrange something suitable after we return to our holdings from this trip?"

Private Meeting with Baratheon:

"Ah." Lord Joran smiles. "I simply do not wish to presume. But I trust that you enjoyed seeing the King's reaction to his gift."

He leans back in his chair.

"Now, House Argenta has plenty of lands, and very wealthy mines. We do not wish to appear greedy, nor do we really need to govern more than is our due. There is only one long-standing wish that our territory has not granted us, and that is access to the sea.

However, Bar Emmon is taxing the Goldroad. I wish to see this part of the road brought under the same jurisdiction that governs most of it from Lannister lands on. Our stretch of the Mander and the Goldroad are our two key routes to transport our goods and people, and they are making the latter prohibitively expensive to maintain.

The Goldroad and the bank of Blackwater Rush that it follows. The rest belong to your lands. As for their existing wealth, I believe it should be first shared to compensate for the losses in men, and the rest divided.

You are wise, my Lady, and know that there are more reasons for this than our mutual hatred for Bar Emmon. The Kingdom is not what it once was. A true and loyal ally could be worth more than we can imagine, in the coming days of strife. The newest tax from the Iron Throne, I fear, is just going to be more tinder, dry leaves waiting for a spark."

Joran sighs and takes a sip of his wine.

"These are dark times for the unwary. But there are opportunities in turmoil, if one knows to grasp them."

House Lannister - House Argenta [EspD: Private Meeting!]
Oh, of course he's handsome! His name is not all that he shares with his lord father," says Titus, flashing a smile at Lord Joran.

"If secrecy is what you suggest, I would be happy to receive you and your daughter at Casterly Rock upon our return to the Westerlands. It is much easier to ensure your safety there than at Lannisport, a recent target to unknown raiders."

House Baratheon - House Argenta [EspD: Private Meeting!]
"If the King was wiser, he would realize that his previously faithful lord would never so openly disgrace him. The fact that he was set up is obvious to me. Our King can't seem to see past his own stacks of gold nowadays.

Your divide sounds reasonable. You have more claim to the Goldsroad and Blackwater Rush while I would be glad to control old Baratheon lands, especially those that border King's Landing. As you say, the King's actions are bound to start a fire somewhere in the Seven Kingdoms. Having land so close to King's Landing would keep the Baratheons ever involved in the political mess that it will surely come to. The upcoming times of chaos will be the perfect opportunity to better our respective houses, as you've already said.

You're a cunning man, Lord Joran. You remind me of a Lannister. I am not certain as to whether that is a good thing or a bad thing," says Cyrenna, smirking.

House Lannister - House Storris [EspD ++++]
OOC: I was trying to say that the Lannister's espionage would be much effective at cracking the hostages than your 0 EspO. There are other ways to interrogate using different stats, though, such as torture. You're welcome to send said resources to Lannisport.

Private Meeting Lannister:

Joran smiles. "Of course. We will be visiting, then, to continue our discussion on a later date."

The small talk continues for a while longer, though both Lords know that the important parts are over. After some time, Joran stands up from his seat.

"If you'll excuse me, I should go tend to my son. The injury shouldn't be too bad, they say it should heal fine, but as a father yourself you know how it is..." With a slightly apologetic shrug, Joran leaves.

Private Meeting Baratheon:

"Having lived as their neighbour for all these years, I will have to take that as a compliment. But it does a man well to remember that there are more important things in this world than gold and power.

And in case House Baratheon ever finds it needs allies in the political mess King's Landing always is and will always be, I will be glad to talk."

King's Landing

"Damn it!" Thomas Argenta would probably punch something if he wasn't aware that that would be a tremendously bad idea right now.

"Oh, don't be such a baby. It was just a bit of bad luck, better it happen in tournament than on a battlefield." Sari is sitting next to his bed, trying to suppress a grin. "It was quite a fall."

"Go ahead and laugh, you know you want to."

"Come on. It'll heal soon enough, and you can try again. There's going to be more tournaments."

"Yeah. I know." It doesn't make this any more bearable, though.

House Highflowers EspionageD: ++++

House Highflowers sails into Kings Landing before the assembled Dornish fleet. Seven of the finest ships in the Highflowers navy were flying seven unusual sails. Each had a great likeness of one of the Seven. Ahead of the Dornish fleet Hyperion Highflowers ships race ahead in formation of a seven pointed star. Having left his flagship in Starfall harbour Hyperion comes to Kings Landing aboard Blue Beard flying an great banner of the Father. He can see Outrageous Fortune and Secret flying the Smith and the Maid. He can't make out the others, but he knows their position. When Ble Beard's captain glides her into dock he makes his way ashore with several small chests and armed guards. He shouts loud to all those who had come out to see the ships of Dorne arrive 'It is written in the Seven pointed Star that the Father commands us to be generous. While I fly his banner how could I do less?' He and his men open the boxes and begin throwing silver Stags* into the crowd. It takes almost a minute to dispose of them all. He waits until the crowd has calmed down before he continues 'Never let it be said Hyperion Highflowers is not a pious man.'

*Coin, if you're not familiar with the books and picturing Hyperion throwing little silver animals.

Well this is interesting. Aria said looking at a report.

What? The King's marriage declaration? I didn't think you would be interested. Her sister teased. Aria threw a pillow in response and all discussion was breifly ignored in favour of pillow hostilities. Once a truce was declared Aria handed the report over to her sister.

This is pretty dangerous info. What should we do with it? Ariel said, all joking gone from her voice.

Whatever we want really. We can keep it a secret, or sell it if we want. Aria answered flippantly.

I think we should just give it away.

What!? But why? How does that benefit our House or the North?

Simple it makes us some friends in the south which we might need later. Ariel replied sweetly.

Aria just snorted, knowing it was useless to argue.

House Carthis

"You did what?! Why on earth didn't you tell anybody?"
"I... I was afraid, father. I'm sorry to have dishonored the house. I was just a boy.... I didn't think..."
"Damn it. It came at the worst possible time, too... Why couldn't you have just told someone..."
"I'm sorry. I'll leave in the morning."
"What? Don't be stupid, boy. You wouldn't last five minutes out there. House Carthis has about three people from here to the Arbour that wouldn't slit their throat as soon as look at them. I'm not throwing a Carthis out, no matter how little thinking they seem to have done."
"I..."
"Didn't think. But you were, what, sixteen? I can forgive that."
"...Thank you."
"What, did you think we were going to disown you? It was stupid thing to do, but we all do stupid things from time to time. No, the major problem I have with your actions is that you didn't tell anyone."
"Father, I thought..."
"That you could hide him? And what, did you want him to grow up as a farmer?"
"I..."
"Look, I won't pretend i'm happy with the situation. But I can understand why you did it. I just would have hoped that you would have learnt that Carthis stands together better than that."
"I... I'm sorry. I..."
"Don't cry. Look, don't... Ah, forget it. Don't cry in public."
And one more thing, my boy... When I said that Carthis stands together, I included your son in that. Bring him here. What's his name?"[/color]
"Vanis. Vanis Carthis."

The patriarch of the Carthis family, Vanis Carthis, has adopted a peasant boy who apparently saved Vanis' life when he was injured hunting. The boy, sixteen years old, has been named Vanis after his benefactor.

------------------------------------------------

At castle Carthis, all was not well. The rain had not abated for days now, and Carthis was preparing for the long ride back to King's Landing. They would have taken a ship, but the rain saw a chance of wipping into a storm on the Bay of Seals, and Vanis didn't want to take the chance.

"Father, you shouldn't go. Erathis can escort us, he's going that way anyway."
"I must, Alis. If I don't go the King would take that as a sign of disloyalty. You know the mood he's in these days. You saw him at the tornament... And anyway, I need to be there to make sure things go according to plan.
Now, we should get lucky. But if we don't..."
"We don't have much of a choice, father. And anyway, a Carthis as a Queen wouldn't be all that bad."
"I would rather emigrate over the sea than see one of my daughters married to that man."
The old man coughed, and fell slightly to the side.
His daughter grabbed him he fell, propping him up. She sat him down in a chair, and turned to face him, concern written over her face.
"Are you alright? What happened? Is it getting worse?"
"It doesn't matter. I'll be fine."
"Father, we need to know. You can't keep it bottled up much longer. Is it getting worse?"
The old man was silent for a long time before replying.
"Yes."

To House Storris
Our trading network is developing extensively. Shall we continue our trades? In addition, would it be possible for us to set up an trading embassy on the Arbour, and for you to do the same here?

To House Targyen
Our delegation will arrive forewith.

To House Bar Emmon
We apologise for any delay, but the proposed marriage cannot be carried out until the King has married. For that reason, it must be put off indefinitely.

To House Farland
We see that you are probably going to be wiped out within the year. No doubt you and your family will be tortured and executed, as an example. Things are unfortunately past the time that we could help you keep control of your purview, but we can still help.
We control the sea around you, and we can send ships to evacuate you and your family, and most of your wealth, to a safe place. We ask for funding for this operation, of course - if you would hand over half your offensive espionage services we would be most thankful. This, simply, is the best deal we can offer you - those espionage services aren't going to be very useful when an army is knocking on your door.
In return for this, of course, we have a variety of refuges that you might want to evacuate to. We suggest the Arbour, as we have friends there and the climate is nice this time of year.

OOC: Yes, i'm offering to Baby Doc him. He doesn't have much have a choice, as he's being invaded by utterly overwhelming forces, and more troops will likely join to eat his corpse. Evacuating with most of his wealth and half his off esp services to a nice place far from his enemies and a tropical climate, with the added bonus that those said enemies will believe that he is dead, is a win.

Yours, always open to negotiate,

Are you planning anything else short-term that we should know about, re: the thing that we discussed earlier?

To House Barethon
Greetings. We have something to discuss. Both of us are going to King's Landing, would you like to meet there?

To GM
GM, can I extract morale from the public elevation of a poor peasant boy into a noble family? Possibly in exchange for reputation?

Rayon grinned. Broadly.
"Truly, Dear Sister, you have never looked more beautiful."
Morna frowned, staring at her reflection in the mirror. She had never been very beautiful, but dedication could overcome a lot of nature's failings.
"The white and silver is a very nice touch, much better than father's suggestion of grey, as befits our house. Why, one could even think you wanted to marry the king."
She shot him a glance that could have shattered the walls of Storm's End all by itself, then continued affixing more pearl-studded pins to the towering monstrosity her maids had constructed from her straw-dull hair.
"Of course I do. Who wouldn't want to be second queen? You only get half as much to do at official occasions than the first queen."
He smiled, and passed her belt, tiny, intricately fitted silver links made to look like waves and fishes moving with every step.
"In any case, make the best impression. The King would hate if anyone didn't give their best for this little ceremony."

Do not worry my sons, you have made your father proud today. Your team work and tactics were exemplery, but there was not much you could do against those 3 Carwins. They understood your tactics too well. Come. Let us go meet your future brides.

An excellent idea my friend, let us make it happen. Perhaps to make the tournament more fun we shall place a wager on who's house wins the tournament over all? Nothing too extravagent of course, just friendly competition.

Of course I want to know who's responsible for this mess! Who was it and why did they do it? I hear rumors of the demise of myself and my house.

That's kind of you, but we have an extensive team of agents at our disposal already and they work for free.

The Night's Watch - House Muldoch [EspD +++++ -]
Bodies tend to be our problem, actually. We would be willing to fund the trips to acquire them.

Vanis Carthis,

Your greed knows no end. I've already found someone willing to help for a much lower price.

House Baratheon - House Carthis [EspD +++-]
We are in King's Landing currently. What did you want to discuss?

GM Message: I don't think rescuing one peasant boy would raise the morale of your people. If said peasant boy becomes popular with House Carthis and is then made heir, yes. You would gain morale and lose reputation for that. Just adopting him is kind of a small scale fluff thing.

To GM:

So, as soon as King's Landing is over with and everyone's back home, the attack on Bar Emmon begins. My plan is to gather my troops at Silverhill, wait for news of Baratheon's army moving and then begin heading towards King's Landing along the Goldroad. Once we cross the Bar Emmon border we'll take apart any fortifications we see but do no harm to the people and, since it should be easy to supply us along the road, we'll bring our own supplies instead of foraging from the land and taking the peasants' stuff.

Can't see any major castles marked on the map in the area so we'll just first secure control over the road and the land area we talked about with Baratheon and then if the war isn't over, we'll move in to support the allies against wherever Bar Emmon is making their stand.

If it so happens that our army is faced by a superior Bar Emmon army, we'll fall back to defensive positions and hold out until allies arrive to relieve us. And if it looks like Bar Emmon is for whatever reason attacking over the border to our lands, we'll again hold our forts and tell them that Baratheon is attacking their homes so they should probably turn back. If they don't, we'll fight defensively and inflicting as many casualties on them as we can while waiting for our allies to come to our rescue.

Malus Carwin sat in the common room of the inn, watching the party his brother had going on with mild amusement. The moment that they had arrived back for the night, Desmond had essentially claimed the place, he, the men-at-arms, and any random person who happened to enter the inn, had been celebrating for several hours.

Malus sat off by himself, watching his brother's antics with a smile. He had definitely earned this revelry. Though Malus was sure he would hear about how he got knocked on his arse for a long time.

Miach sat next to him, talking about the wonders of the city, how amazing the tournament had been, but Malus had trouble listening. His mind couldn't help but keep turning to the surprise he had for Miach.

House Whent: Private Conversation at the Tournament

After the melee, Malus tracks Lyle Whent down to speak with him in private.

"It's good to see you Lyle, though I wish it had been under better circumstances. Your sister was dear to all of us, and she will be missed greatly.

However, I have something else I'd like to bring up. I don't know if you father mentioned it, but I've been in correspondence with him lately. He told me that Eddard Tully is no longer courting Betheny. He and I thought that with that being the case, perhaps Betheny and Miach could be wed? They've always been fond of each other, after all. And it will finally unite our houses in blood as well as friendship. What do you say?"

House Carwin: Private Conversation at the Tournament

Lyle had spoken with his father briefly after the tournament. He had heard of the plans attempted by Aliser for Bethany. The pending marriage between Bellena and Eddard Tully was already wonderful, and the prospect of Bethany marrying Miach Carwin was most beneficial. The Riverlands were going to be strongly intertwined, a stronghold to be feared, and not to be messed with. Lyle knew Aliser was getting too old to rule as Lord of Harrenhal, and he knew that it was in his best interest to take his daughters' marriages seriously. These were good times for the Whents, despite the loss of his sister.

"Ah yes my good friend Malus. I have spoken with my father and I am delighted in plans for marriage! Bellena and Eddard are to be married within the year, and Bethany and Miach should be next! We would love to have you and your house stay with us on your way home from King's Landing. Bethany and Miach can spend some quality time together, and if things go well, as they should, Bethany could go and spend time at your family's home. Wedding preparations can be discussed in the meantime. I am delighted in this my friend."

"I have, well heard him that is, not seen him, just shouts, 'my eyes, my eyes!'"

To the honored Lord Manderly,

Lord Barnabas ill health has currently made it unable for him to set pen to paper, but he has set the responsibility on my humble shoulders to set forth this message to you.

The local Sistermen have been much harassed by rumors of Wildlings being sold ocean-going boats by the Braavosi as of late. Our honored lord does not give much weight to the words of the smallfolk, but as he cares for them as if they were his own children, he has decided to set their fears to rest by building a defensive fleet.

Our own shipyards are not able build enough vessels, so we would like to appeal to the Manderlies for aid. We would, of course, pay you in gold and in return we would expect fast sailing vessels that would be able to catch any interlopers at sea and intercept them before they can reach our fair isles. My Lord is sure that the great shipyards of White Harbor would be able to provide is with the finest of vessels.

My Lord would be greatly in your debt, if you could help him in this matter.

Maester,

Thank you for letting us know of the Braavosi's cooperation with the Wildlings. As protectors of the largest port in the North, it is important that we are alert to any possible threats to White Harbor.

As for your request, we can produce those ships for you. We can produce as much as + ships within the year. How many are you looking to buy? I hope House Ulmstead has the gold to pay for it.

My son was assassinated while I was away at the tournament in King's Landing. The family's grief is unmatched at this time. Shortly, we will be marching on the wretched scum who is responsible for his death - House Karstark. They are a poor excuse for Northerners. If you would pledge support to eliminating the Karstarks, we would discount your cost and share the spoils of their defeat with your house. Please let me know if you are interested.

Beginning of Turn 3...

King's Landing

The King's new tax money has not gone to waste. Parties and festivities have become twice as common in the capital city as the King takes his time choosing his third queen. The taxes have been used to fund reinforcements for the capital as well. Sellswords and mercenaries have been seen flocking to the city to serve the King in addition to his current forces. The King has issued an update on his taxation:

To the lords of House Storris, Carthis, Redwyne, and any other nation involved in the new trade network,

Your efforts to boost the economy of my Seven Kingdoms have been noted. To show my appreciation for what you have established, I will be rewarding you by building a fleet to serve in the name of the crown to protect the coasts and your trade lanes. Your taxes have been doubled to pay for this venture.

House Highflowers

The raiders have not stopped their attacks. Their quick, bannerless longships moved in to attack the city of Starfall, but they faced a prepared resistance force this time. Not only did the raiders fail to actually raid anything, but House Highflowers managed to decimate a good portion of the fleet and took several prisoners.

On another note, the talk of the land seems to be how generous Lord Hyperion Highflowers is after he donated a large sum of gold to the High Septon and the Chuch.

The Vale of Arryn

The Vale is at peace once more after the swift and one-sided conquest of House Farland. It is rumored that House Farland and their retainers have covertly fled their lands and have taken sanctuary in the lands of their fellow loyalists and allies in the Crownlands, House Bar Emmon. The two houses are in similar positions and have joined forces for mutual survival. House Grafton now governs Gull Town and the lands previously held by Hosue Farland.

House Manderly

After the assassination of his son and heir, Lord Domeric sought out justice. Having followed the assassin to Karstark lands where he disappeared, Lord Domeric was able to but 2-and-2 together. House Manderly and House Ulmstead have combined forces to march on Karstark lands. No real fighting has taken place yet, and no one has received word from Lord Arnolf Karstark on the matter.

House Bar Emmon

With Lord Duram in prison, the ladies and the house retainers are in charge of managing the house. House Bar Emmon was tipped off about an upcoming attack by an unknown source. A large force of soldiers representing House Argenta marched down the Goldroad into Bar Emmon lands and began laying claim to several small settlements and farming communities. At the same time, a huge force of combined armies from House Baratheon and House Buckler moved in to assault Bar Emmon's eastern holdings.

Initially, neither force faced much resistance. As House Argenta got further in land, they stumbled across a moderate force of Bar Emmon troops in one of their defensible holdings. House Argenta largely outnumbered Bar Emmon's troops and pushed them back despite their defensive advantage. Both side faced casualties in the battle, but House Argenta has claimed some of Bar Emmon's lands for their own.

Meanwhile, House Baratheon's forces seize a much larger area of land from Bar Emmon and are bewildered at the complete lack of resistance. Much of the east lies in Baratheon hands, but they also discovered the location of Bar Emmon's army. A large force is walled up in Sharp Point, the primary city of those lands. The Baratheon forces have laid siege to the city.

Having known about Argenta's attack ahead of time, House Bar Emmon took advantage of this knowledge. Their fellow loyalists and allies in the Crownlands, House Farland, assisted Bar Emmon in hiring a sizable number of mercenaries and, accompanied with regular soldiers, they crossed the borders of House Argenta with the intention of attacking Goldengrove while Argenta forces were elsewhere. They planned to use the element of surprise to disable House Argenta, but they themselves were surprised when their forces were opposed by the smaller armies of House Rowan. House Rowan intercepted the forces before they reached Goldengrove, but they were unable to stop the larger Bar Emmon force. Both sides lost armies, but House Rowan was forced to retreat to Goldengrove where they are besieged.

They are a sworn brotherhood trained to manage the deadly abnormalities found north of the wall. As such, they have little interest in gold or glory and mostly ignore the politics of the Seven Kingdoms. They have strong ties to House Stark, Lords of the North.

House Rosby

While Gyles Rosby hasn’t been seen in public for a while and there are rumors of his health taking a turn for the worse, there is a flurry of proclamations issued in his name:

The taxes on House Rykker are lowered, to account for the difficulties the Rosby’s bannermen face in defending their liege’s land. Additional supplies and weapons are sent to the Rykker’s soldiers their fortifications are repaired and strengthened and new routes are established to send reinforcements in case of war.

A special purse is put aside to pay pensions to the veteran soldiers and those, who lost limbs, fighting to protect House Rosby. This purse is extended to soldiers of House Rykker.

To GM Only

''Come closer, Ser Hornrigde. I had it bad recently. My health is failing more rapidly, then I expected. I fear the end, not for myself, but what it would mean for my daughter. I want you to make me a promise, that you will serve and protect her. I’ll give you a special command… call them Thorn Knights. You can handpick the best men for it among my sworn men and those you deem trustworthy. I want Thorn Knights to act as personal troop for my daughter.''

[I spend +++ Morale to form Thorn Knights, to protect my beautiful rose, Victoria Rosby. A bit of knightly lady worship could be nice. I know it’s grim-dark Westeros, but a bit of idealism and knightly traditions should still be possible]

House Storris

House Targaryen
Majesty, I pray you reconsider you new tax on the trade fleet. Already the navies of the Arbor and others make clear the way for the other ships.

These increased costs will have to be passed along to our costumers and this will reduce the availability of goods and services for towns and ports all over Westros.

Might I instead offer a solution more likely to enrich both your majesty and all your Realm? If the trade fleets are expanded, with royal permission of course, to begin to cover overland trade as well it would truly be beneficial. I propose a cooperative in which all houses who wish involvement in the Wealth Conferring Trade Network they would be able to invest in local outlets and in turn be open to a share of the profits.

OOC: I want to set up something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHOAM

Of course House Storris, having invested significantly already would have a large portion of the directorships. Local trade would not be restricted. However the same justification for the fleets works for this. With its larger economic base the it would be able to ship goods more cheaply then independent merchants. In areas like the North furs for example would be fairly cheap. But farther south few besides this new enterprise would be able to deliver goods in bulk. If the king approves of the idea, we can continue the negotiations via PM.

After the pleasantries have been dealt with, horses taken care of, luggage taken somewhere and so on, the weary travellers are hopefully treated to some customary hospitality before further negotiations on the two subjects at hand commence. Perhaps the seating and such arrangements may have been chosen to let the two marriage candidates have a little time with each other. That's up to the Lannisters - if they decide otherwise I'm sure there is a subtle message there, and Joran will not miss that.

Iron Islands

Captain Farman stood on the deck of the Fair Maiden, peering patiently into his bronze spyglass. Little could be seen at this hour of the night, but that was the point. He had been waiting for close to an hour.

Out of the darkness came a bright, orange light. That was the sign. He gave orders to begin rowing and continued watching the orange glow as it quickly grew larger. Distant cries could be heard. On either side of him, ships of the Lannister navy sailed swiftly and quietly towards the burning ships of the Iron Men.

As the Fair Maiden and the rest of the fleet closed the distance, the Iron Men were mobilizing. Unfortunately this was what the Iron Men knew best - war. But the Westerlands struck the first blow. As they came within range of the enemy ships, Captain Farman gave the orders to fire on the Greyjoy fleet which was still struggling to mobilize. A few ships had left their ports and returned fire on the Lannister ships. They were quick. The night which had been dark and silent only a few minutes before had become alive with the sounds of cannon fire and the bright light of ships burning. Men shouted frantic orders to their crews and Captain Farman watched as a Greyjoy ship collided with a Lannister ship near theirs.

Their orders were to cause as much damage as possible and get out before the Iron Men could mobilize in full force, so the Lannister fleet withdrew their forces as quickly as they had moved in for the attack. The Fair Maiden
sailed away from the Iron Islands, her captain continuing to peer out of his spyglass at the chaos they had started.

The bonds of loyalty between liege lord and vassal are the foundation of land’s order and justice. Everywhere, that is, except for the Riverlands. In fact, the Riverlands were more peaceful than ever before. After his return from King's Landing, Malus had started an organized effort to root out bandits and highwaymen in the lands under his control. It had taken much time and effort, but banditry in Carwin lands hand almost been eliminated. A Banquet at White Harbour (Various northern houses invited)

Lord Rakhar flint had spent lavishly on this feast, despite this not being his own hall. He had provided the musicians, had imported expensive foods and dishes for the cooks to prepare, and had personally arrived with four carts of ale and wine in tow.
Now, he was sitting at a long table in a small, private room, just him and the Lords.
"My Lords", he begins, nodding at each of them in turn, beginning at Lord Stark.
"You may recall I warned you of planned Ironman attacks earlier. We were mistaken."
He makes a pause for dramatic effect, as his son and two guards escort a man into the hall. Judging from the fair hair and the sea-tanned face, an Ironman.
"This man here is Ser Anath Elderhall, an Ironman captain and our ally.
Not we were the targets of the Ironmen. We saw the fleet, and leapt to conclusions. No. The Ironmen remember well that they, like us, are First Men. They have declared themselves against the Lannisters, for whom we, as well, have little love.
My lords, I bring you a suggestion. The King in the North bowed his head to the dragons of the south. But there are no dragons anymore, and we must no longer bow to this rich Andal whose ancestors took Casterly rock away from the first men by trickery. Should not these lands be ours?
I say, let us come to the help of our First Man brothers. Send our fleets, and our armies against the Lannisters and show them that the North stands proud, once again."

A letter to House Greyjoy (+++-)

To the Great Lord of the Iron Isles

My Lord: once again, the first men find themselves under threat from the Andals, our ships burned, our lands plundered, our honour spit upon.
But are not all first men brothers? Quarrelsome, for certain, as all brothers are, but in the end, still sharing blood.
The Rock is still brother to the Iron, and the blood of the Kraken still flows in the veins of House Flint. We offer you an alliance.

Sharp Point Siege

House Baratheon first noticed something was amiss when their supply lines were being raided. Raids were uncommon in their lands and \raids targeting Lady Cyrenna's house were unheard of. Because of the trouble with the supply lines, it was not entirely unexpected when scouts reported a large army of House Rosby troops marching towards the siege.

The battle began at dawn. Baratheon and Buckler troops still outnumbered Bar Emmon and their new allies. A cavalry charge was performed by Rosby knights led by Lord Rosby's recently established Thorn Knights. Captain of the Thorn Knights and champion of the Queen's Tournament, Ser Rikkard Hornridge led his fellow knights against the Baratheon troops in hopes of breaking the siege of Sharp Point. Meanwhile, Rosby infantry marched towards the much larger Baratheon and Buckler forces. Bar Emmon took advantage of the reinforcements and the troops began to attack from the city.

The fighting was hard, but the battle short. Baratheon forces were stuck between the city, Rosby infantry, and the Rosby cavalry charge. Ser Rikkard and his Thorn Knights proved themselves in battle for the first time, cutting down two of Cyrenna Baratheon's champions and breaking her soldiers. To avoid a slaughter, the soldiers of House Baratheon and Buckler made a quick retreat to reinforce their conquered lands and to reestablish their supply lines.

House Mooton - House Rosby [EspD +++++ ++]
Lord Gyles Rosby,

I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate you coming to me with this information. House Carthis is a wolf in sheep's clothing. He promised us wealth and independence in exchange for our spies and used those same spies to attack us. Unfortunately it would be difficult for us to wage a war with them, especially with our complete lack of defenses against further espionage attacks. It would be extremely helpful if you would lend us your aid in the form of protecting us from their infiltration. Perhaps if they try again your agents can surprise them and make a counterattack.

House Lannister - House Highflowers [EspD ++++]
I understand. Your help would be appreciated as soon as you are able. Our first strike against the Iron Men was to our advantage, but they are sure to strike us back with twice the strength if the assault does not continue. Your men would be helpful for the cause.

House Mallister - House Carwin [EspD +++-]
OOC: Probably. Remind me in your EOT?

My liege,

Our swords are sharp and ready to serve you if the need arises. Your kind leadership makes my men eager to fight for you. Let me know if there is anything that you specifically need.

Lord Patrek Mallister

Banquet at White Harbor
The Banquet happened to be smaller than usual. Several of the lords who were expected to attend were not present due to the tension between House Manderly and House Karstark and their houses being on the brink of war.

The Lords of the North, typically unified in their purposes, could not agree on a course of action.

"We have conflict between our own people. Is it really wise to waste our resources on a bunch of snobs in the south?"

"I think this war does present us with opportunity. Opportunity to rid our coast of the raiding Greyjoys once and for all."

"Anything involving killing Lannister men makes me happy."

House Stark specifically does not seem interested in thwarting the Lannisters. "The Westerlands are too far and the Greyjoys have done nothing to earn my trust. Our resources would be better used keeping violence out of the North and solving the issues between our own houses."

(OOC: The PC houses of the North can speak for themselves.)

House Greyjoy - House Flint [EspD +++-]
Generally we do not see reason for working with lousy Northerners whether you are of Iron descent or not. Half of the Kingdoms are of Iron blood with all of the pillaging we do. However, the Westerlands have somehow managed to put up a decent fight. We could use your help... and especially your espionage.

House Lannister - House Argenta [In-person: PM Level]
The young couple is given plenty of alone time in the lavish city of Casterly Rock. Never far from them are older members of both houses, watching the couple happily interact. There seems to be quite a bond between the two.

"Yes, the Hewitt lands could be profitable, though they fail to take advantage of their geography. I might be interested, but with our current war it would be unwise to anger any of the houses from the Reach. We cannot fight a war on two fronts. Can you?"

House Baratheon - House Carthis [EspD +++++ -]
Bah, truce. The King cannot deny me the Baratheon rights to Bar Emmon lands.

House Targaryen - House Storris [EspD +++++ ++]
An interesting proposition... more gold always makes me happy. I'll bring it to the council.

to House Lannister:

"My intention was not to do it before the current conflicts are finished, of course. But things should be planned and prepared in advance."

To House Mooton [Def. Espionage +++++ ++]

''Of course. As soon as you openly denounce House Carthis for their misdeeds, my men will move to protect you from their retaliation.
It would be most wise for you to send your children to House Rosby’s lands for the duration of this dispute. I fear, House Carthis may strike against them and here, they’ll be most secure under my protection, until the power of House Carthis is broken and the threat is past.''

To House Bar Emmon/Farland [Def. Espionage +++++ ++]

''House Rosby won’t stand aside, when the loyal king’s subjects are betrayed and assaulted. Let us combine our forces and drive the Baratheon from your lands. If we continue to attack their supply lines, will slowly erode their power. But at the same time, we mustn’t be too overeager and leave the city completely unguarded.''

To GM Only

Actually raids were supposed to start after the battle. I didn’t want to betray my presence early on. I was planning to land near Baratheon and use my high mobility to arrive on the heels of the scouts reporting my arrival, so I’ll catch them unprepared. Still, it worked out fine I guess.

Did I manage to capture anybody of note? A bit of ransom money would be nice.

I'd like to hear what you want to get worked out beforehand, then. Though I suspect that as more and more houses become involved in the wars of the Kingdoms, the entirety of the Seven Kingdoms will be pulled into conflict. We may need the Reach for our own survival.
House Mooton - House Rosby[EspD +++++ ++]
You must understand that I am hesitant to trust any of my children in the hands of anyone at this time. Already I have been fooled by the wolf in sheep's clothing. I will be sending them to King's Landing with some of my men.

We will issue a public statement shortly.
Houses Bar Emmon & Farland - House Rosby [EspD +++++ ++]
Perhaps half of the Bar Emmon forces and a legion (+) of your men should be left behind to defend the city. The rest can be sent to bring the war to the Baratheons and reclaim our land.
GM-Thelonius
Sent you a PM.

Casterly Rock - Private Meeting

"Hewitt has long been a shield of the Reach against the Ironmen. It appears you are dealing with that enemy now, so we cannot play on that, but they have also been away from most of the plots in the more central lands and are not very on guard against intrigue.

The casualties you have inflicted on the Greyjoy fleet should increase your reputation if you play things right. You are shielding us now, after all. If we, at the same time, found a way to discredit Hewitt, people would turn to you. This could legitimize further action on our part.

But you are right in that we need to consolidate quickly. The King's demands are going to spark a war, sooner rather than later.

Perhaps we should approach Tyrell, try and secure ourselves a friendly front?"

House Muldoch

Banquet at White Harbor
Why should we bother to ally ourselves with the Grey Islands? Ultimately it serves the North best if we leave them to fight off the Lannisters on their own as two of our rivals will be weakened.

Banquet at White Harbour

Lord Rakhar strokes his grey beard, smiling a bit. Apparently, he suspected that question.
"Because, my Lord Muldoch, because those who take part in a war take part of the spoils. How would you like a few chests of Lannister gold, or a slice of the Land our ancestors once held before the Andals came? Claims can certainly still be found, the Maesters keep every shred of paper ever written."
He pauses again, takes a sip from his cup.
"The Lannisters are, soldier for soldier, almost evenly matched with the Iron Men, even with their allies. They have far fewer ships, though much more gold. If the North were to add his power... why, we would smash them."

House Lannister - House Argenta [In-person: PM Level]
"Perhaps finding a way to tie the Hewitts to the Greyjoys later in the war would fit to serve our purpose.

The wars at hand are of greater importance, though. The Westerlands much stand together and protect our desirable lands from the greedy clutches of covetous neighbors. It would be best if we made an offer to Lord Tyrell and formalized things with House Baratheon before more sides enter this conflict."
Banquet at White Harbor
"Are you even from the North? You do not act like it. You act like your Iron brothers more than you act like us. We will not empty our lands and march to war with a distant kingdom whose people are already plagued by the violent conflicts in those lands. If anything, we will join with the Westerlands to rid the threat of the Iron Men from our coasts."

House Martell & Tyrell to the houses of the Reach & Dorne:
Lord Martell & Tyrell formally summon the lords of their lands to convene at Highgarden to discuss the conflicts in the Seven Kingdoms. It is of the greatest importance that all are in attendance.

Casterly Rock - Private Meeting:

"All right.

If you handle Tyrell, I will talk with Baratheon. What about the other houses? Stark surely does not like the... excesses of the King. And securing the Vale would go a long way toward winning any wars."

Banquet at White Harbor
That was uncalled for. Lord Muldoch says to the latest speaker. However it does bring up another reason not to get involved. If we side with the Ironmen the reputation of the entire north will be hurt badly. Also if we really want our old lands back then let us wait for them to weaken each other and then attack whoever we want without having to worry about the Ironmen attacking us later. Or we could just build up our own forces and infanstucture to ensure that the North holds dominance without having to interfere in other's affairs.
