I'm playing in a D&D game where I will be obtaining a Bear Companion, I'm only level 2 and I haven't taken the Natural Bond feat yet. I was wondering what is better for an animal companion, to give it bonuses as you level up, or to switch to a different one as time goes on? I was thinking of taking a Black Bear (-3 Druid level) when I hit level 3 or 4 (i am planning on taking natural bond at level 3) and then replacing it with a Brown Bear at level 7 and keeping that and only giving it bonuses from my druid level. I know it is a tad bit early planning, but the party consists between the levels of 1 and 3, and in our last session we fought a Dire Bear and 3 Dire Wolves, so we level up fast, but with a very high risk of dieing.
