Why not attach the Shrink Item effect to a bag of holding to create a bag that can hold sixteen times as much? I mean, the bag of holding is effectively an interdimensional portal that leads into a box, so it isn't like putting smaller things into the box is going to create any conflict.

I'm not sure how the multiple effects thing works though, so it might be better to make a Rod of Shrink Item and then shrink things before putting them into the bag (Being careful to renew the shrink every couple days). Since Shrink Item has a duration of days, you even get the continuous/use activated effect for half price!

sixteen times as much?

You mean 16^3 times as much. That's 4096.

Oh, and by RAW, you could add the effect you want to a bag of holding for 30,000 gold, or less, depending on how you interpret certain aspects of the custom pricing rules.

30,000 gold extra is a bargain for a bag of holding which holds 4096 times as much, though.

Don't forget the footnote that says if a spell has a duration greater than 24 hours (which Shrink Item always will, since it has a duration of days/level and can't be cast at a lower level that 5) the cost is halved. 15k for 4000 times the storage capacity.

Shrink item only affects non-magical items. Not that it'll matter much because if you're pulling shenanigans with literally 1 million pounds of material it's probably going to be non-magical material anyway.

Indeed, except that the bag is casting the spell on each item that goes in, individually, making it use-activated. That footnote applies to continuous items, not use activated.

Call it a continuous effect on all items inside and make the effect persist for a number of rounds after the object is pulled from the bag.

It doesn't work on magic items, wouldn't be useful during combat, and would still be restricted by what you can cram down a 12" opening. not game breaking and would help an epic level adventurer actualy carry all that gold around.

Obvious solution: make the shrinking apparatus a magic funnel, which is ten feet wide at the top. When not in use, you can just put the funnel into itself to shrink it. That way you can fit logs inside and easily carry everything you need for a boat.
