View Full Version : What is the best single panel for you?

Taking into consideration that the panel does not need to be self-explanatory (probably all panels with the greatest deals of heroism, humor, drama, or else are built around tons and tons of previous strips), what would you consider to be the single Best panel in OotS so far?

I know that "best" is an extremely wide and subjective adjective, but subjetivity is a need for this question :P

IMO, 3rd panel from #594 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0594.html) is the most hearttouching panel ever. It is all extremely dramatic, heroic and lousily clichè, where Elan gives us a sneakpeek of the power he has adquired when becoming a Dashing Swordman, literally leaping into action on a top climax moment, just after Therkla's death, and despite being .. well, despite being Elan, i seriously think he was going to kill Kubota without further do.

So, your opinions?

Among my favorites are at least those two:

last from
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0448.html

and last from
http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0484.html
(not the black "OotS will return" panel, the one before that.)
which is actually a lot nicer when you consider the panels leading to it ("camera" going up the columns of black smoke...)

I think it's helped a lot by me liking the character in question a ton, but panel 8 of His Popularity Has Waned (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0789.html) takes the cake so far. I so did not see that coming.

The first panel here - http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0430.html

To me, it symbolises everything we know about Roy, that blind act of heroism in a final, doomed attempt to hold of Xykon before he damages the people Roy sees as his duty to protect.

And come on, is there a more bad ass panel? Seriously.

That's my favorite as well. I liked V before (I love all casters, and an excessively analytical one just does it for this nerd) but that was just too perfect. It also nicely contradicts the long string of legal run around that just preceded it.

^--- This

Roy's leap onto the Undead Dragon with the Lens Flare from the sun is the most iconic moment driven into my head by OOTS. It is by far the most memorable image from this strip for me. It's by no means my favorite scene or event in OOTS.... but everything else relies too much on the context of the situation to really explain why it is so awesome... while Roy's Leap stands on its own as a pure visual moment without needing any context to its raw awesomeness.

The composition of Panel 1 for 443 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0443.html)

Perfect sense of time, distance, and the slowly rotating Roy provides a nice sense of vertigo as you scroll down. To me, it really does represent what the medium can do in terms of having the art instill in the reader a feeling of being part of the scene.

There's been several, but some (like V's "Disjunction" (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0636.html)) really rely on the rest of the scene to set the mood.

Last panel of this (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0191.html) always makes me chuckle, though.
Fifth panel of this strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0281.html) is also awesome all on its own, as well as the seventh panel of the third page of this strip (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0409.html). Yes, I enjoy seeing Miko get the stuffing beaten out of her.

Its a panel Rich turned into an entire page in War and XP, so the website comic doesn't do it justice. It is the panel depicting Roy leaping off the castle wall by means of the ring of jumping onto the back of Xykons undead dragon, Greenhilt sword held high. I get all emotional when I flip to the page. Yes, its very pathetic of me.

On the flipside, the depiction of Roy's exit from that same battle is obviously better on the website.

I didn't like it as a two page spread in the print version, because it's interrupted by the page crease.

That said, it seems I'm in the minority, as that panel seems to be the most popular in this thread so far.

Funniest panel: last panel of 659 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0659.html)

Most dramatic panel: Actually, I think this one for me was in SoD
the entire section where Xykon faces off against Dorukan was amazing, but the moment when we see Xykon battling the angels and Right-Eye heading towards him then Redcloak casts the disintegrate spell perfectly captured all of those characters and was hugely moving, as well as showing everything wrong with Redcloak's sunk costs attitude.

Biggest "bwuh?:smallconfused:" moment: Second to last panel of 386 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0386.html). I'm pretty much with Nale there. The first two you can see coming, the leprechaun costume...not so much.

Revisiting some early strips and there are real gems I'd forgotten about, like...

An early incidence of Elan's unexpected lateral thinking (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0101.html) (panels 8-10)

And the bottom panel here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0105.html): that moment is both fine storytelling and such a recognizable moment from all our campaigns.
