i probably sound like a noob, but where/what is the wealth of a level 1 character?

100 gold. It's in OHB I believe.

Look in the equipment section of your PHB. Each class has it's own starting gold.

Check that, II have no idea about 4e.

It's specifically in PHB1, page 18, the first full paragraph of the right-hand column:


Finally, consult Chapter 7 to pick your equipment. You begin your career at 1st level with 100 gold pieces, enough to equip yourself with basic gear (and maybe have a few coins left over).

The rules for starting above level 1 are in DMG1, page 143. Such characters begin with 1 item at their level+1, 1 item at their level, 1 item at their level-1, an amount of gold equal to the value of an item of their level-1, and whatever mundane equipment they may desire.
