hey guys.

I am working on a "bad guy" he is leader of a group of people there have raided a library to get his hands on some scrolls :)

The Idea is he need to be a spell caster of some sort, he is level 4 and have 2 Level 2 bodyguards, both of them Warlock :)

any good ideas :) he need to be hard but not to hard :)

the grp is level 3:

bard 3
Fighter 3
Druid 3
Sorc 3

Maybe a diviner?

Edit:

Why I think this would be a good idea is that such a character would have a ready motivation to seek out knowledge, and with careful spell selection, wouldn't be impossible to beat.

cleric.

or illusionist.

that would be what I picked.

As useful as the divination school is, there aren't a whole lot of spells in it a low level that will impress PCs.

I'd recommend a sorcerer focusing in the use of illusions. A sorcerer because they have more spells per day and the versatility of other classes doesn't really come into play at that level. The warlocks can handle damage, while the illusionist misdirects them and/or hits them with color spray.

I would say to go with a Sorcerer in this situation (because of the increased SPD vs. a Wizard), but the only downside with that is that a Sorcerer only knows one level 2 spell at this level. While there are some good illusions out there, you're still pinning yourself down to one spell that's above what your PCs can do. Of course, this can easily be overcome with the right wand or scroll (the latter would fit in well with your story ). After all, a Scroll of Minor Image or Hypnotic Pattern only costs 150gp.

Other than that, I'd say to use a Cleric (of an evil deity, maybe that would go well with the Warlock theme for bodyguards, but I don't know the campaign) for better AC and healing spells. The only thing is, in my DMing experience, illusions > AC, as a lot of illusion spells give miss chance. And potions/magic items can always be used for healing.

The Spellhoarding disorder for dragons, detailed in Dragon magazine 313, would be absolutely perfect for this. It's a dragon who comes to the conclusion that knowledge = power, material possessions deteriorate but knowledge lasts forever, and so it single-mindedly seeks out more spells to add to its spellhoard.

Make him a Dragonwrought Desert Kobold (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/races/environmentalRacialVariants.htm#desertKobolds) (no Con penalty), give him Sorcerer levels but his spellcasting ability gets traded for Wizard spellcasting of equal level. Use the Battle Sorcerer (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#sorcererVariantBattleS orcerer) variant along with Stalwart Sorcerer from CM for added survivability, the drawbacks to his spellcasting get negated because he uses Wizard spellcasting. Spellhoarding gives him Int +2, Wis -4, Scribe Scroll, Eschew Materials, and +5 Spellcraft. He writes his spells on his scales, referred to as a spellhoard, instead of in a book.

Dragonwrought kobolds don't take physical ability score penalties for aging, so he could be venerable for +3 Int, Wis, and Cha. Even starting out so old he'll still outlive most races due to a considerably longer lifespan for being a dragon. That will put his ability scores at Str -4, Dex +2, Int +5, Wis -3, Cha +3, plus all the kobold traits, plus the dragon creature type qualities. I'd actually give him one Wizard level so he can specialize and get some ACFs, and three levels of Stalwart Battle Sorcerer.

Make him a Conjuration focused specialist (Enchantment, Evocation, and Necromancy prohibited), get Abrupt Jaunt from PH2, and use Martial Wizard (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#wizard) to get Combat Reflexes instead of Scribe Scroll, since he gets that via his template anyway. Take Spell Focus: Conjuration and Greater Spell Focus, give him proficiency with armor spikes via Battle Sorcerer and proficiency with Weapon Focus with a Glaive via Stalwart Sorcerer. He won't be able to cast his wizard spells in armor, but he can wear leather straps with armor spikes on them instead of armor. He can take a hand off the glaive to cast a spell then put it back on as a free action, though he probably won't do much in melee anyway. His spells should be Mage Armor, Shield, Grease x2, Color Spray x2, Alarm, Web, Glitterdust x2, Invisibility, and Mirror Image. He should start out with Mage Armor already cast, and use Shield if his Alarm spell alerts him to the PCs' approach. At the start of the fight throw on Mirror Image and then use Web and Glitterdust to hit as many foes as possible. If someone gets in his face he should Abrupt Jaunt to avoid their attack and Color Spray them. Once his foes are beaten he should try to ransom them for any arcane knowledge they can offer rather than killing them, even if he has to meet back up with them later to collect it.
