Thoughts on Shadows

Just read a master of shrouds handbook, and I really want to add use of Shadows (the monster) to my already made Shadowcraft mage for a upcoming session this weekend. Any tips to optimize their use without dedicating more than 1 feat and no class levels. I do have gold to spend though :) All suggestions welcome, just please list sources!

Shadows are on the Summon Undead V list, so if you have Cleric or Wizard casting (and it's pretty hard not to on a Shadowcraft Mage), you're set.

... it's a conjuration (summoning). you don't need clr or sor/wiz casting. you just heighten a figment.

... Ugh I wanna make it as good as I can. I know there is a spell in Frostfell that will make them better. I was wondering if there were any quick necromancer items worth using to make them more handy.
