Ok, it also makes it a fixed width font and doesn't allow line wrapping (the box will have a sideways scrollbar if it has long lines). It's designed for displaying code (as in programming code), any generic code.

It's useful for posting URLs. For example, for avatars. If you just paste the URL without the code box the forum abbreviates it with an ellipses, making it slightly less convenient and easy for people getting their avatars.
