I'm wondering what paper/cardboard is used to print the tokens on. I'm considering creating some custom tokens and would very much like to know.

I don't know what WotC uses, but I've had good luck with this (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ETXY78).

I got tired of using tokens on their own because they're a pain to pick up and keep track of. I used this method:

1. Get a 1" diameter dowel rod.
2. Cut it into discs (1/4 to 1 inch thick, depending on your preference of token height). You can use any cheap saw.
3. Sand down.
4. Buy a large, cheap candle and melt a bit of wax onto the top of each piece of wood. While it's still warm (but don't burn yourself!) rub it so it covers that side.

Tokens can be stuck onto and pulled off of the waxed side. This way, the tokens have some mass that you can move around the table. You can make maybe many dozens of these for under $5.

I always made my own by using Newbie DMs tokens (http://newbiedm.com/2008/11/22/newbiedm-tutorial-counters-tokens-or-pogs/). Handy, and cheap.

Totally. I even have the same hole punch.

Holy crap. We currently use mini's, but that is an awesome method. I know how I'm spending my friday night.

Seriously.

Minis are cool, but you can throw together a set of tokens in about 20 minutes. So you never have to explain that the skeletons are really fire elementals, and that the kobolds are actually grey oozes again.

That was the main reason my old group went to the token method. That and the money it would cost to get the mini collection just didnt seem feasible.

I really, really prefer tokens. They're easier to deal with, don't get knocked down, and easier to track if the party is fighting 4 of the same critter.

My current group tends to use minis for PCs, and that's fine, and depending on the DM running, we'll either use tokens or minis. For NPCs, at a minimum, I really prefer tokens.

I totally forgot Newbie had that on there. It's been a while since I read that. Just don't tell him I forgot, I'm in his Monday night online game and I don't want my poor cleric to suffer. :smalltongue:

Thing is that I want to do the custom tokens professionally. Customer tells me what they want, I draw the characters/monsters, print them onto the proper card stock, and Profit. Newbie's method is fine for what I might want in my home games, but if my plan is to happen, I need something a little more.

On the subject of homemade tokens:

I had grabbed a bag of 3/4" wooden cubes, some black paint, and some adhesive letters in various colors. I painted the cubes black and applied stick on letters using different colors to indicate different conditions (bloodied, prone, etc.). They've come in handy.
