It's a really old Monte cook Ad&d series --- does anyone know if it was updated to 3.5

Nope. It is a very cool connected adventure. It's EXTREMELY light on stats so it's super easy to just run the fluff and fill in the stats from the Monster Manuals(3.X) or Bestiary(PF).

I'd also look at Dead Gods & The Great Modron March. Both ultra cool adventures. A lot of stuff in Planescape was light on crunch. If you own the Manual of the Planes you pretty much are set to go.
