So if I have an Elven Wizard with the level 1 substitution Elf Generalist does adding the Domain Wizard variant from Unearthed Arcana have no penalty?

This is usually what is accepted. Since the Domain Wizard ability is not actually an ACF (it just says that it cannot be applied to a Specialist Wizard) they are compatible.

However, some DMs may see this as trying to "cheat the system," so be wary.

Don't forget to take the feat Collegiate Wizard for even more free spells.

Could check for flaws, initiate of fairie mysteries (dragon 319) or eidetic spellcaster (dragon 357) too.

If you wanted to add that little extra something >>

What's Domain Wizard and Elf Generalist?

By RAW, you can take both at the same time.

A DM should be well within his right mind to call the Elven Generalist a form of specialist though. You are "specializing" in being a "generalist". Which makes you a specialist, even if you don't classify for specific things like.. Master Specialist.

Edit: Domain Wizard is a very powerful wizard variant in Unearthed Arcana. Elven Generalist is a racial substitution in Races of the Wild.

Elf geralist is a substitution level that in effect gives a generalist wizard a bonus spell much like a specialist wizard does.

Domain wizard is an alternate class feature that gives you a set of spells around a particular theme gaining the ability to cast each spell once a day like a domain spell that clerics get, and at a level higher.

so basically doing elf generalist and domain wizard gives you 3 1st level spells per day at 1st level before bonus spells for hihg stats are taken into account.

Domain Wizard is from Unearth Arcana and Elf generalist is from Races of The Wild.

What's Domain Wizard and Elf Generalist?

Domain Wizard is an option found in Unearthed Arcana that lets you pick a group of themed spells. They're cast at +1 CL, you add them to your spell list for free as you level, and you get a bonus spell per level as long as its from your "domain". Only requirement is to not specialize in a school of magic.

Elf Generalist is a racial substitution found in Races of the Wild that gives you an addition spell added to your spel book every time you level as well as a bonus spell for the highest spell level you can cast.

Edit: Ah 0nimaru & Kenneth beat me to it

Although this seems to be the knee-jerk reaction, a good counterargument is pointing to the Focused Specialist variant.

It adds +2 spells of each level, whereas the Elven Generalist Domain Wizard adds +1 spell of each level (of a restricted list)and +1 spell of your highest level.

The two are comparable in power level.
