View Full Version : [PF] fun with Dwarven sorcerers

Just noticed that the Empyreal wild-blooded type for the celestial bloodline of the Pathfinder sorcerer uses WIS in place of CHA for all class features. This lead me to the rather peculiar idea of an effective dwarven sorcerer. How do we make this fun and thematic?

My first thought is to get approval for the battle-sorcerer 3rd party variant to make a bearded gish-in-a-can, but I'm open to other ideas.

Note: this is purely theoretical at this point, though I might submit it to the next PBP I apply to.

or...use gold dwarves and keep using charisma.

Pathfinder dwarves are +2CON, +2 WIS, and -2 CHA*. Using 3.5 variant races would both not use the WIS bonus and require special DM approval.

Anyway, Gish in a can could work via Sorcadin, and empyreal bloodline lends itself to "warrior of the light" anyway. This requires a bunch of 3.5 stuff to work well, though. If you're stuck with just PF material, I'd suggest going straight sorcerer and playing up the angelic powers.

If nothing else, a guided weapon is a nice fall-back.

Gish is one option, but possibly not the only one. Are you familiar with the Taltos books? Daymar there looks like a high-WIS, low CHA sorcerer to me.

First thought: Fast Healer Feat (http://www.pathfindersrd.com/feats/general-feats/fast-healer) + Infernal Healing Spell (http://www.pathfindersrd.com/magic/all-spells/i/infernal-healing) + Extend Spell Metamagic (http://www.pathfindersrd.com/feats/metamagic-feats/extend-spell-metamagic---final) + Magical Lineage Trait (http://www.d20pfsrd.com/traits/magic-traits/magical-lineage)

If I read this correctly, assuming a CON score of 16, combining all of these together will create a 1st level spell that will heal either 80 hit points (if Fast Healer applies every round due to the magical nature of fast healing) or 23 hit points (if the Fast Healer feat only applies once).

Another possibility is you can abuse your Dwarfiness to play around with Wealth By Level mechanics. Combine the Craftsman alternate racial trait with the Hedge Magician and Eldritch Smith traits to reduce your costs by 5% for each trait, so long as the item in question has some stone or metal in it. Since it's only a +5 to the DC to craft an item based on a spell you can't cast, that 10% can compensate for your relatively small spell list.

Edit: The +5 to the craft DC got errata-ed (http://paizo.com/paizo/faq/v5748nruor1fm#v5748eaic9o7j).

Mixing a celestial bloodline with infernal healing? Might cause an allergic reaction.

Oddly enough, neither of the bloodline nor the spell have alignment restrictions for arcane casters, but you might get asked some awkward questions for about 20 rounds.

Only to spell trigger/spell completion items. Making wondrous items, weapons, armor, whatever, you're still good to go - you're just not going to be a master potion brewer or scroll maker (but then, those don't involve a lot of stone, either). Believe me, with my last wizard, my DM didn't entirely appreciate the "yeah, those divine spells I can't cast? +5 to DC each. Oh look, I take ten to the crafting check and auto-pass."

New Idea:

Take the Stonesinger alternate racial feature, then make an Empyreal/Deep Earth (maybe bedrock) bloodline crossblooded sorcerer.

Overall, it will give you a nicely thematic mix of class features and a good selection of available bonus spells and feats.

Crossblooded has two downsides. The first is that you lose a spell known per level. This sucks. The second is that you take a -2 to your will saves. This is more than counterbalanced by the fact that you are using wisdom as a casting stat.

Well, it occurred to me that a one-level dip in sohei monk would qualify for eldritch knight (sohei gets simple + martial weapons prof). That would give casting stat to AC, add in guided weapons for casting stat to AC, attack, and damage. A different and interesting way to Gish, even if its not optimal.

As a bonus, he could always act in a surprise round and flurry with any weapon that is on the monk list and not exotic.
