The sky has been slowly darkening all day, and the smell of rain has been thick in the air. Now it has finally begun to fall, accompanied by loud peals of thunder that seem to roll across the landscape. The sun is hidden behind massive stormclouds, and a cold wind blows from the north.

As bolts of lightning begin to slam from cloud to ground and pieces of hail begin to strike the earth, the need for shelter becomes obvious. Ahead in the distance, a large tor rises from the ground, its form illuminated by the occasional lightning bolt. It seems rocky and solid, and though climbing it in this weather would be folly, it might have some outcropping that would provide safety from the storm.

As you approach the cave, you see others climbing the tor, and a few already huddled near the entrance to the cave. Lightning once more splits the sky, and the first bits of hail have begun to fall. Including yourself the group, driven together by the storm and fate, includes a adamantine-plated warforged, a beautiful elf gripping a greatsword, a human covered in tools and the trappings of magic, a slight and quick halfling, and a young human woman with twin longswords and striking features.

You hear someone, you can't tell who, call out to the rest of the group. "Why are we waiting outside in the storm? The seal to this tor was blasted open last month!" You look and see that the massive stone seal to the earthen tomb is indeed shattered, and the massive door into the depths of the hill looms unlocked and unguarded. Above you, thunder booms, shockingly loud. "Hurry up, you all, before this storm kills us!"

Post all OOC comments and dice rolls in spoilers.

I think I'm going to pick blue for most of my DM-y comments, though recurring characters may get their own colors.

The massive warforged takes a moment to light up a hooded lantern, sheltering the flint behind it's greatcloak-covered form, then steps inside the tomb, wordlessly motioning others to follow.

Clear illumination for 30' radius, shadowy illumination for 60'.

The light and the opening of the massive stone door, which opens without a sound, reveal a stone chamber beyond the entrance that measures at least ten paces square. Peeling paint and broken scrollwork suggest that it was once decorated with some care, but now only dust remains. Three massive stone doors—one each to the left and right, and one directly across from the entrance—lead deeper into the tor. You can smell a faint scent coming out of the tomb, almost hidden by the rain; decay and mold, with a tiny hint of ozone.

Sida runs inside still using her backpack as a shield from the hail; instead of frightened by the storm she seems excited. When she gets inside she nods at the warforged in appreciation for the light and looks back to see if anyone needs any help.

"A silver piece says the left door leads to trouble. Anyone care to take that bet?" The halfling grins as he lowers his hood, fishing a silver mark from somewhere in his vest, flipping it several feet into the air before catching it and returning it to his vest in a flash. "Kind of you to bring a lantern to help all us poor, lightless stragglers, my good... er... fellow. Say, you aren't one of those 'forged that fancies itself a woman, are you? Not that there's anything wrong with that if you are, of course. Just, you know, curious.

"Lampbearer, you have the honor of meeting Erad Silverfingers, halfling extraordinaire! Gambler of legend, wilier than foxes, quicker than a snake, and all around useful-person! Anything you need done, I'm your man! Well..." The halfling flexes an arm, pulling an expression of mock sadness at the lack of any noticable biceps. "Anything that doesn't involve me picking up something heavier than a coin pouch, anyway. Oh, and doors. I don't do doors. Nasty things. Have you ever met a door that held anything good for you behind it in a place like this? I haven't.

"...what are the odds your heart really is tin, do you suppose? Say... ten to one? Twenty? Your gold on my silver?" Erad grins, hopping down off the stone.

While approaching the group she was completely in awe with the music the female human was playing – “Your music is all over the place, the storm is compleeeeetely ashamed” – and after taking a seat, she looked directly at her play with admiration and added – “so what Father told me about other Bards is true”

Charging into the tor, rain dripping off his thick woolen cloak, Wilf tries to stop himself suddenly as he sees the arranged humanoids... and others.

"Stormpeace! Please, stormpeace!"

Taking a moment to actually glance around beyond his initial exclamation, he clocks the violin-playing bard, the smirking halfling and the intimidating warforged.

"... Huh, looks like you already agreed."

Removing his cloak with a swift movement, he flicks it toward the door in an attempt to remove as much water from it as he can.

"Terrible bloody weather."

Slightly more than a mumble, Wilf clearly intends for the others to hear.

“Don’t say that!” – replied Haianna while puffing her cheeks – “your music is great, I don’t know why both Father and you like to play downhow pretty both play” – and after a pause to catch some breath, Haianna said with entusiasm – “I prefer how you adressed yourself before, a champion, sounds way better and fits you. Myself, the armor is just the way to be able to travel and force my luck under the teachings of Tymora”.

She then looked at her surroundings and noticed they were not alone. The Bard’s music attracted her to this place, and it was just now that she noticed a Halfling who appears to be the companion of a Warforged, and an aproaching Human to whom Haianna next spoke – “Terrible indeed, but I’m pretty sure we will make us good company while waiting for it to stop” – then she spoke as if referring to everyone – “Haianna is my name.”

The sound of his knocking echos gently, but there is otherwise no effect. Outside, thunder rumbles once more, and the ferocity of the hail seems to increase.

The sound of hissing rain, pounding hail, and howling wind from outside is interrupted only by the occasional loud crack of thunder. Still, this room seems stable enough for the most part. Even when the thunder seems to shake the very ground, not so much as a mote of dust filters down from the ceiling.

The doors leading into the tor, however, do show signs of weakness, seeming to tremble with every thunderclap. Suddenly, in conjunction with a particularly loud thunderclap, all three doors break open at once, falling from their doorways into the room with a great cacophony. Seconds later, the sounds of squeaking fill the air as a pack of rats swarms in from the largest doorway.

Yay, combat time! I'll have the map up after class; until then, feel free to roll initiative in the OOC or IC threads; if you put it in the IC, add some fluff to go with it. There is no surprise round.

The rats provoke attacks of opportunity for everyone as they attempt to enter your squares. Their turn is not over, but I'll need some AoO's from you all.

The rats seem to be crazed due to the lightning and the noise, but the more naturally-minded among you notice that they seem to be acting out of character for such vermin, which would normally choose to run instead of fight. A drain in the center of the floor allows the water to escape, but old, dark stains suggest that it was used to carry away other fluids long ago, and you can detect a whiff of decay and death, stronger than in the previous chamber. You can tell as you approach that the room beyond has a lit torch or fire inside, and you can hear the sound of speaking in an odd tongue*.

As Bastion enters the room, however, the doorway bursts open, revealing two burly hobgoblins, each holding a sword and a torch. They stare at the party for a moment, shocked and enraged, and then charge forward, shouting at the top of their lungs. They swing at Bastion and Sida, but their attacks both go wide, the haste of their attack throwing off their aim.

If you speak Goblin:

This module is odd, in that you can skip most of the encounters and move straight to the boss fight.

SPOILER ALERT: This is the boss fight.

A long, stone table dominates the center of this chamber, and bright bits of gold wink from within the dust that covers the floor. Upon the table lies the well-preserved corpse of a tall bugbear wearing the tabard and belts of a knight. Standing off to one side of the table is a human woman, an attractive brunette barely older than Haianna. She blinks at your light, and it becomes clear why the two hobgoblins, creatures with natural darkvision, were holding torches.

"Oh. Hi there." Her voice is the same as the one that suggested you enter the Tor and that you continue to explore it. You notice that she's covered in trinkets, tools, and gear, in a manner that resembles Wilfred. It's merely a resemblance, however, as this woman clearly had more money to work with when outfitting herself.

"I didn't really expect you all to get here so quickly. I wasn't quite ready, you see, and you forced me to make some hasty changes, in the dark, no less." She places her hand on a metal switch, and you see that a large and confusing tangle of machinery and magical fixtures has been built into the chamber roof. You see two copper strips that run out of the chamber into the last one, where they presumably travel all the way to the top of the hill.

"Now then, I'm glad to have some witnesses for the first in a long, long line of wonderous, original creations. Ladies, gentlemen, I give you: life." She throws the switch in time with a massive crack of lightning. There's a terrible screeching sound from the machinery, and two long copper prongs funnel electric power into the body on the table. Suddenly, the corpse twitches, and then sits up, lifting an old, rusted morningstar in one hand and a javelin in the other. As it climbs off the table, its mouth opens to loose an eerie moan. The brunette shrugs and laughs, and the light, happy sound is twisted into something dark by the situation and the surroundings. "Well, to be accurate, un-life, but that's just semantics. Now then, let's see how you all do."

She is not, in fact, a part of this module, but I've always wanted to have an overarching plot of my very own, and she's one of the best villain's I've ever come up with.

That said, if you decide to kill her I will not get mad at you or punish your character; however, I will warn you that she's several levels above you guys, for now anyway.

She darts around the edge of the room and moves towards Wilf, her face panicked and wide. She leaps clear over Wilfred, her movements clearly enhanced by magic. She lands on the other side of Wilfred in the hallway and then she cuts down a small side passage, her feet slapping on the stone.

The rest of your attacks are far less successful, as the powerful undead creation proves to be as tough as stone, its rotten shield and tough skin keeping it safe from harm. "So this your reanimation thingamajig, what's the point? Zombies aren't that difficult to create, and most people don't even need a thunderstorm for it."

There is a moment of tense silence, and then the urge to explain clearly gets the best of your host. "Yes, making undead is pretty easy, but it's expensive. Now, this machine was pretty expensive too, I suppose, but it doesn't require fuel other than the lightning that this region is so known for. If you want to drag the hobgoblins in here and use them I wouldn't mind; they thought I was going to help them create a little home base for their band of raiders, and I got them to help me move the heavy pieces."

She speaks long enough for you to tell that her voice is coming from all around you; it seems that she's still using the illusion Wilfred saw through before. "Anyway, I request that you do not mess around in this place; it took forever to get everything set up, and I want to see if I can get the machine to start pumping out more impressive things, like wights and ghouls. Any chance you'll go wait in the vestibule until the storm dies down?" Her tone is faintly sarcastic; as best you can tell she doesn't expect you to listen to her.

Bastion prods the nearest piece of the eldritch machine harder. "Your lil' hobgoblins tried to kill us." With voice of deep disapproval, "Without even introducing themselves." Clanking the morning star to his armour-plated chest as a demonstration, the construct adds, "And so did your twice-late test subject. I tend to take that sort of thing personally."

"Then there's this whole 'undead factory' thing. Why couldn't you invite a machine that can make waffles, instead?"

With the battle over, Wilf inspects the machine carefully, checking each and every part of it for magic as he goes.

"Fascinating..."

Engrossed in his inspection, he almost doesn't notice Bastion poking the machinery with the morningstar. As he does though, he rushes toward the warforged and tries his best to push away the morningstar.

"What are you doing!? No! Stop hitting it! Agh!"

Satisfied he's made his point, the human once more draws upon his knowledge and continues inspecting the machinery, completely ignoring the illusory artificer.

"This... Shouldn't work?"

Speaking aloud to nobody in particular, he continues.

"It's complicated, I'll give it that, and very well-made... But it shouldn't work? There's vital parts missing all over the place... How... How is this working?"

With Sida's suggestion he exclaims once more, rushing over to her and waving his hands in a mix between excitement at the machine and dismay at the group's proposal to destroy it.

"What!? No! Don't do that! Maybe I can use some of this later! Destroying it serves no purpose! It shouldn't even work anyway, I'm not entirely sure why it did, it's clearly half complete, but there we are. Anyway, no, can't destroy it, terrible waste! At the end of this hallway is a small chamber whose wooden door lies on the floor. The smell of dust pervades the air, and the sound of thunder is muted here. Numerous body-shaped lumps are visible through the doorway, each wrapped carefully in layers of grey thread like woven mummies.

Bastion walks down the hallway first, and he makes it though the small cobwebs littering the hallway without much problem, the powerful warforged not bothered by little bugs like humanoids would be.

He is, however, bothered by the very large, strong, and nearly invisible web spun across the hallway in the doorway at it's end. He's caught in the unnaturally sticky and strong net, and as he struggles an extremely large spider crawls down from the ceiling. It suddenly becomes very clear where the mummified bodies came from.

I rolled Init in RL to save us a bit of time; if you would prefer to roll in the OOC instead, let me know, but I don't think it should be a problem. You win, so after the surprise round it will be your go.

If you continue on to the main room you see that the rat's corpses have received no such treatment, being right where you left them. Traveling on to the room to the left side of the massive entrance, Bastion steps through the door, wary and alert, the rest of the party close behind him.

The only object of interest in this chamber is a statue at the far end. It resembles a sarcophagus standing upright, except that the head of the figure carved upon its lid looks distorted and seems to have tendrils instead of hair. The stone chest sits there in the middle of the floor, the lid clearly unlocked. The stonework was quite fancy, once, but time and leaking water has eroded the intricately engraved stone. On some places you can see the hint of faded paint, and you realize that the chest may have once been quite the work of art.

Tempt-tempt. You know you just want to open it up. Or, you know, Wilfred could Search for traps. One of those two things.

Wilfred carefully moves forward, checking the floor beneath and around him as he goes. When he reaches the chest he inspects it carefully before easing the lid open a half an inch. He peers under the lid to see a stretched wire extending between the lid and the main chest, and an arrow pointed at his eye. He manages to freeze in place, having just noticed the trap in time.

Wilfred uses his mastery of engineering and mechanical skill with incredible precision, defeating the trap in an extremely complicated and obscure way: he cuts the wire. Easing the lid open, he finds that most of the chest is taken up by a trap designed to fire a fusillade of darts around the chest when opened. Inside the chest are two pearls, a bag of coins, and a well-made headband that seems to have ignored the effects of time. The coins are of an old denomination, but not too old for you to be unable to tell that they're worth about one hundred of the current standard gold pieces.

While his disabling of the trap is simple, Wilfred spends much time pondering it and trying to make it look as complicated as possible.

That done, he ignores the "regular" items and picks up the headband, concentrating for a moment.

Wilfred puts the headband on, and nothing much happens. While you all wait with bated breath for him to try it on, however, you all realize something; you haven't heard any thunder or lightning for several minutes. Even though you're near the entrance, you can't hear the storm at all.

When Erad arrives in the main entrance room he finds that the storm outside has indeed quieted. It is currently raining lightly outside, but there are enough gaps in the clouds to show that it is night time, the stars twinkling softly in the great celestial dome. As best as you can all tell, mostly due to Wilfred's explanation, the machine is divided into three parts, the largest in the animation chamber, and two smaller subsidiary sections in the two chambers off of the antechamber. Wilfred gets the nagging feeling, however, that something is still missing; the power source.

Pondering the machine, hoping desperately that Sida doesn't destroy it, Wilf's mind drifts back to the rope going straight up and out of the tor.

The rope slowly begins to retract, and after a half a minute it vanishes into the dark upper region of the shaft. "This is going to take me a minute. Hold on." There is an extremely awkward silence for a minute or so. Finally the rope tumbles back down the shaft, knotted every five feet or so. "You, artificer. You really call yourself one of us? I'm ashamed. Make the damn rope a 'skill item.' It's a first level infusion, and if you can't pull that off then I heavily overestimated you guys."

The rope creaks and strains under Bastion's weight, but it seems more than sturdy enough to support the massive construct as he carefully ascends into the tower. He pulls himself up, arm over arm, the thick knots in the rope giving him something to brace his feet against. After about a minute he reaches the shadowy top of the tower, and he goes out of sight from the rest of the party. You can still hear him, however, and there are no sounds of conflict. After a minute or two all goes quiet, then you hear him walking around again.

Bastion:
As you ascend the rope into the darkened shaft you can see that the rope leads to the ceiling of a small room at the top of the hill you've spent the last day inside. There is a candle burning in the room, set off to one side, and next to the candle is a letter. If you climb up into the room you'll find it completely empty; just four walls, two of which have large broken sections that open out to the hill outside. The storm is definitely over, but it is still the depths of night.

You hear a whisper of wind right next to your head, and then the artificer's voice appears, sounding as if she was right next to you. She is not, however, and no matter how closely you search the room you won't find her. "Hey there, big fella. I look forward to taking you apart and putting you back together, to see what makes you tick. You've clearly got some highly nonstandard modifications, and that always gets me excited. Anyway, more on that later. See that envelope down there? You should take that to a guy named Sionaas. He's a wizard-y guy, he's been building a dungeon out in the hinterlands. He'll know what it means.

Anyway, think of this as a return for you guys breaking my machine. Tell that little artificer with you that he better either come work for me or learn quickly if he wants to survive. I don't tolerate much competition. Anyway, the Whispering Wind is running low, and I don't want to use another charge. Have a nice night, 'forged."

Looking around the room you'll eventually notice that two copper strips come up out of the tunnel you climbed up and lead to the roof. The bulk of the machinery up here is on the ceiling, and there is clearly more on top of the building to catch the lightning. Right at the center of it all, however, is a single bright red stone, red like blood, and the size of a human's palm. It's practically begging to be removed and looted.

Sida comes up to find a very contemplative Bastion and the machine on the ceiling. The machine is large and very complicated, and there are clearly more components on top of the small room/building you're in right now. Right at the center of it all, however, is a single bright red stone, red like blood, and the size of a human's palm. Sida can see that the storm has stopped, and the air smells fresh and clean. It's still dark outside, and the stars haven't started to poke through the clouds yet. The moon is visible, however, and its pale light streams through one of the large openings in the side of the room.

Other than the envelope, Sida and Bastion find nothing of interest in the tower other than a few strands of long, silky black hair that Sida finds caught on a bit of metal in one of the large window-doors. Sida and Bastion together manage to crush obviously critical components of the machine; even without any real technical knowledge it is obvious that the crystal in the center is the focal point of the device, and the trappings and tubing around it is easily destroyed. With but few words exchanged the two of them descend the carefully tied rope, contemplative on what they have heard and read.

Once they reach the bottom Sida reads the note to the rest of the group. It reads, "Do Not Open" on the front in graceful calligraphy, and so naturally you all tear into it. Inside is a second, smaller envelope and a slip of parchment that reads "Seriously, just be good pawns and take this to Sionaas. He's a wizard, lives in the mountains, pretty famous." Undeterred and unconcerned about the feelings of the artificer, you open the internal letter, which contains two pieces of parchment. One of them reads, "Good job, you're not complete tools; now then, on to business. There'll be a reward if you bring him the other sheet there, the one with my mark." The other sheet of paper has nothing but an extremely intricate and oddly colored mark, seemingly ingrained into the parchment. Wilfred recognizes it as an Arcane Mark, presumably the artificer's, though there's no way to tell for sure.

You all wait out the night, healing and resting cautiously, and when day breaks it's bright and beautiful, the storm of the past day gone. The air is cool and fresh, and the landscape seem to be refreshed in the wake of the storm. You hear birds in the trees and the sound of gurgling water, a stark juxtaposition to the atmosphere of the night before. The lot of you head down the path to the closest town, Reed's Hill, which is about a half-day's walk. You pass the day with idle conversation, and after a few short hours you arrive.

I have a few things that are going to happen, but you now have a chance for a bit of shopping/rp. Remember, this is a dinky hamlet, so they don't have overmuch. Nothing magical except for a few potions and scrolls made by the town's sole Adept.

After an hour or so of dealing with the few merchants and shops in the small town Sida, Haianna, and Erad return to the dinky tavern that Wilfred and Bastion had settled down in with a massive fortune, at least when compared to the amount of money any of them had seen before. Between the hobgoblin's gear, the pearls, and the coins the group had managed to collect 610 gold pieces. Wilfred and Bastion had struck up a conversation with the barkeeper in the meantime, as there were next to no patrons in the tavern in the middle of the day.

The dust had barely settled from the door closing when a ruckus began outside, starting off in the distance and growing louder quickly. It seemed that a great many people were upset about something, enough so to come in from their fields in the middle of the workday. Hurrying outside, you find yourself confronted with an uncomfortable sight; a lone hobgoblin standing in the middle of a large circle of humans, enough to make it seem like every single inhabitant of Reed's Hill was included in the mob. The people were yelling and jeering at the hobgoblin, but no one had yet managed to work up the nerve to attack him; the hobgoblin had a long, glittering rapier in his hands, and the most the crowd was doing at the present was lobbing rotten fruit and other bits of trash at him.

Moving closer, you manage to hear the hobgoblin speak, in surprisingly unaccented Common. "Dammit, people, I'm just passing through. I don't know or care what problem's you've had with locals, but I've had nothing to do with them. Leave me be, damn you!" This condemnation only serves to incite the crowd further, however, and you see a man in long, flowing white robes step forward. His adornments are shabby compared to the clerics found in larger cities, but here he seems to almost glow with authority.

"We care not for your lies, wretch. You will tell us the location of your foul compatriots, or you will die for your sins." As he speaks another man comes forward, a small fellow dressed in muted brown, and he murmurs something in the clerics ear. The holy man turns toward your group, squints in the sunlight, and then raises his hand for silence. Remarkably, the entire crowd hushes itself in less than a minute.

"Good travelers, you have once again proven to me that all things happen by the will of Pelor. I have heard tale of your recent accomplishments in the hills, and I ask you to serve this town once more, both for the purpose of goodwill and, of course, for a just monetary reward. I have no doubt that my people could lay low this wretch-" The people jeer and shout. "-But to do so lives would surely be lost. So I ask you, brave adventurers, to aid us greatly by striking him down, and in doing so ridding the world of evil."

Showtime. I'm not going to draw a map until you decide what to do. You have about a round before you need to reply to the cleric.
