So, to get master specialist, I need spellfocus (school I specialize in), which gives me a +1 to dc.

I found a feat called spellcasting prodigy which does a +1 to dcs, and gives 1 extra spell per day. Would it be plausible to use that as the prereq instead? (and, by corrolary, later classes that need spellfocus)

Assume that it overlaps (does not stack) with spellfocus if I were to get it later, and that 3.0 is allowed in the game.

3.0 and 3.5 have different styles when it comes to how fast spell DCs scale. Your DM should probably decide on which he/she wants to use to resolve this sort of thing.

Where is this feat? I'm gonna beg my DM to let me take it and see his ruling on stacking/replacing Spellfocus.

Spellcasting Prodigy lets you use your spellcasting ability as if it was +2 higher for all spells to set DC, highest level spells you can cast, and bonus spells. It is not an appropriate substitute for Spell Focus in the school you want to be a Master in.

Errata to the feat gets rid of the DC boost. I have the feat for my character, but the DM is keeping the DC boost. It does stack with Spell Focus.

I'd say go with the errata'd version, since otherwise it messes with the balance of feats. It would effectively be Spell Focus x9 with only 1 feat, which is somewhat broken if you start taking Greater Spell Focus. As well as making Archmage (as well as other prestige classes that require Spell Focus) much easier to get into.

The feat being referenced is in the book FRCS.

However, even if 3.0 material is allowed, it doesn't matter. The feat was updated in Players Guide to Faerun (a 3.5 book). Now it only affects your number of bonus spells. It doesn't affect your spell DCs anymore.
On the plus side, you can take it at any level, not just character level 1. And it can be taken multiple times (for a different casting stat each time).

Standard rule: Use material from 3.0, unless it was updated in a 3.5 book. In which case, use the 3.5 version.
