View Full Version : Fantasy disease names?

I'm in the process of writing up a homebrew class focused around the use of poisons and diseases. Part of the class's function is access to class-specific diseases. I've already worked out the mechanics of most of the different diseases, but now I've hit a stumbling block. Namely, I've discovered that I'm garbage at coming up with disease names!

So Playground, help me out here. Toss me some fantasy disease names. They need not be system or setting specific, though you may draw from D&D concepts for the names if you like. As a sweetener, I will afford one (1) e-cookie for each submitted disease.

Delicious, no?

Ever since I saw it in BoVD, I've always loved "Warp Touch." Both the disease and the name.

My tip? Use real world names, or close to it.

The reason? People will be able to have a relation to those diseases. A name with background will hit harder than a made-up one.

That said, here's a few examples, shamelessly stolen from the Exalted system, some of them slightly altered.

White Sun Sickness.
Green Sun Wasting.
Grinning Fool Death.
Embrace of Decay.
Green Rage.
Heartwasp Infestation.
Haven's Plague.
Jingling Pox.
Yellow Poxes of Contagion.
Dragon Dies Screaming.
Broken Organ Condition.
Drunken Moth Syndrome.

Not all of them will be winners, but that hardly matters when you can generate 25 in a second. :smallwink:

We have a winner!

That's extremely helpful for a name-challenged 'brewer like me. Take the cookies. All of them.

 Om nom nom.

I'm the same with naming towns, inns and the like. I find it helpful to try a quick google search for "[whatever] name generator" when I get stuck.

Some of them are hilarious however.

Air Arse for instance.

And Canine Heat. :smalleek:

The two make an interesting combination.

Take one of your Monster Manuals, open it to a random page, then add "Pox/Plague/Ache/Boils/Fever/Sickness" to the end.

Slight tangent, but there's actually a kingdom in my current campaign known as The Blessed City of Diphtheria. (Yes, that (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diphtheria) diphtheria.) It's a long story, but basically, someone said "diphtheria" when trying to say something else, and rather than let that go, we accidentally ended up retconning that it was so named because a plague of diphtheria wiped out all the elves there, what with their low CON scores (this is a 3.5 game), and since the elves in this world tend to be insufferable, the non-elves who moved in after them were sufficiently pleased to name their city after it.

Anyway, as you were.

I've always thought that the alternate name for the umbral blot(blackball) sounded less like a solid ball of evil and more like something you'd pick up in a house of ill repute.
