For the current campaign im playing in im playing a wizard/archivist and i was looking at replacements for familiars or other different familiar options. I was wondering if there were any good alt familiars or replacements that are actually decent as i couldn't find anything amazing (with all the bookkeeping i have to do for the character anyway i wasn't going to burn a bunch of feats to improve my familiar or anything like that)

So would anyone happen to have any suggestions? I still haven't chosen a school specialization or anything like that but my race is locked into basic goblin (ive always wanted to role-play an intelligent goblin)

I hope you read the familiar handbook (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19870010/The_Familiars_Handbook_--_2007)... But in general I have the feeling Wizard familiars are the less useful: little HP, little Charisma for letting your familiar using UMD.

*Cough* Take Planar Familiar from Planar Handbook, get a Mirror Mephit at level 7. Win the game.

I did read the handbook but it mostly just talks about how great familiars are and how to make them even better. i would love to just trade it away for something i would actually use :smallfrown:

The familiar handbook is very useful to be sure. Especially with Improved Familiar, familiars can do all sorts of fun things. Choose them for their SLA's, their superior senses, for UMD usage, or for touch spells. If you really want to, there are a few nice spells to buff your familiar for combat as well, but that's a tertiary concern.

And yeah, mephits are the bomb. Even without Planar Familiar.

Hummingbird familiar for +2 initiative; butterfly familiar for +2 spellcraft (good for incantatrix optimization). Both are from DR I believe.

If you are in summoning then use Rapid Summoning alternate class feature from UA. And take 5 or 9 Malconvoker levels.

The PBHII has some nice wizards ACFs to trade away your familiar. Abrupt jaunt is the big one. You need to be a specialist though. There's also a whole gaggle of ACFs in Unearthed Arcana, Rapid Summoning et al.

It's generally accepted that having a familiar is preferable to not having one, though. But I guess that depends on your play style, and if you want another creature to micromanage.

I'll leave that here just in case.

Well... no. Only the classes that allow to cast arcane spells count. And it is debatable if PrC that increase an existing class do count or not; probably not.

You could take the Loner flaw and get an extra feat.
