We all know that tanks don't really work in D&D because of the lack of agro. But does a Tank work?

How would you make a useful Tank in D&D?
(I would prefer it to be robotic/material rather then syntheist or the like, but if that is the best way so be it!)

Agro? What agro (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agro) meaning do you use?
About the question, as a vehicle you probably have to use the mounted rules. To make it useful you should consider:
- some kind of ranged weapon to simulate the cannon or other weapons.
- decide the harness of the metal shell that protects the driver and the difficulty open the door.
- If you think that there is no cannon, but archers or crossbow-users inside then give them cover.
In the DMG there are information about artifacts that are like modern weapons. Use them for the cannon.

The MMORPG version. "Aggravation". Also called "pulling". The act of getting mobs to focus their attacks on you and just on you.
There was a thread here a while back on making the apparatus into a functioning vehicle. I'll see if I can dig it up.
Edit: Bingo. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=213358)

Yup. Might go with the effigy siege crab idea; big, metal, lots of HP.

Full plate barding on the siege crab, and either an animated balista or some sort of cover for the firing crew.
Idea. Mount a balista Huge heavy crossbow on a swivel on top, then make it an intelligent item and throw all sorts of tasty enchantments on it.

Well it was originally called "A Different Type of Tank"...
Living in a Flying Box... (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19857754/Living_in_a_Flying_Box...)
(Ab)uses stronghold builders guidebook to make a hovertank protoss carrier type thing. You could add arcane ballistae or magic cannons(I think I saw stats for them somewhere actually) if you want to I suppose.

Oh yeah, totally doable. As a example, my current char in my RL game is a crusader. Uses the stance that gives enemies I threaten -4 to attack my allies. I also tend to lay out solid damage, so ignoring my AoOs is a poor choice. In practice, this means mobs tend to hit me.
But, yknow, if they don't, the rogue-like char has Fade Into Violence, which gives him a bluff check to redirect attacks on him to me.
It's a little less straightforward than MMO aggro(which is likely good), but it CAN be managed.

This is exactly what I am looking for! The spell turret even acts like a gun turret! :D
Start with crawling and work up seems the best way to keep the prices low; only costs 30,000 that way.
