Since you need 10,000 XP for the next level and the encounter probably did not get the party over 10,080 XP, it doesn't really matter in your case.

When raised with the raise dead spell, you lose a level and then have half the XP required to reach the next level. You are now 4th level, so the character will be 3rd level with half the XP required to reach 4th level, which is 4,500 XP

No.

To get 3rd level, you need 3,000 XP. For 4th level, you need 6,000 XP. That's a difference of 3,000 XP, half of that is 1,500 XP. These 1,500 XP added to the 3,000 XP that are required for 3rd level add um to 4,500 XP.

If I recall correctly, if a character dies in an encounter it doesn't get any experience for that encounter at all.

i think that is incorrect.he participated until the 3/4 of the encounter. :).i think that he will get xp :)

If you want to DM fiat it, that's fine. But I'm pretty sure that if you die in an encounter - no matter how far into it - RAW you don't get the experience.

I have never heard of that before, not that I am saying you are wrong but where are you getting that from?

The DMG, I thought. I could be wrong, though, just thought I read it. I'll have a look.

edit: Okay, I think I was wrong, and I think I know why. I read this line wrong:
Only characters who take part in an encounter should gain the commensurate awards. Characters who died before the encounter took place, or did not participate for some other reason, earn nothing, even if they are raised or healed later on.

But what if your spirit goes to Ysgard? Shouldn't you get XP for that, even if you didn't take part in the encounter?

The way we usually play it...you're raised (he has the 4500 xp), and then the DM awards xp as he sees fit. Gaining the 3.5k would put him at 8, which is slightly ahead of where he was. Character death sucks...hard...but when you do it like that, the suck factor isn't that huge. He learned from his mistake...and therefor is slightly ahead.

I think Manual of the Planes specifically rules that out. You don't take anything from the afterlife back to your living body. You are raised with exactly the same knowledge you had before your death, without any recollection of the afterlife.
