Brief Introduction

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic is a reboot of the MLP franchise by Powerpuff Girls artist Lauren Faust, currently viewed by (almost) the entire Internet, not only the intended audience. Here is a place where we discuss the joy of friendship.

It's a clever show. It has excellent writing, character dynamics, humor, animation, and generally treats kids seriously rather than condescending to them. It has every right to be a 20 minute corporate committee designed infomercial, but it's not.

Pixar technically makes shows for little boys, and produce some of the best animation in the world.

No Brony could ask for more. I recommend watching the episodes in order. They're all up on Youtube. Unusually, Hasbro seems fine with having the entire series up in public because they've made no move to bring down any of the episodes. Search for "Friendship is Magic Episode 1" and you should find the series pretty easily... Or search for "Sharing is Magic" Google Doc. That is all.

Whoa, calm down there. The show is light hearted, optimistic fun but it's not for everyone. It's good fun, the community is good fun, and everyone can do with a reminder that friendship is magic but if it doesn't gel for you we'll love and tolerate you anyway. Plus, you might hit the wrong episode. Ask first?

> Derpy Hooves/Doctor Whoof

Two minor background characters who were adopted as emblems of 4chan. Derpy Hooves is so named due to an animation error in the first episode that had her eyes facing in different directions; 4chan has assigned her the role of Ponyville's mailpony, and her only line so far has been "Muffins". The show's animators are aware of Derpy's popularity and she's shown up a few times recently with her eyes obviously derped. Currently made canon in Feeling Pinkie Keen and in Faust's picture showcased below, Derpy was deemed important enough to appear in storyboards for Season II.

Dr. Whoof is a pony with an hourglass cutie mark; he and his kin save time and space very quietly off camera.

Okay, I have the seed of an idea, and I want your opinion on whether it's worth growing. Base concept: Psychonaut Fluttershy. Not a full crossover mind you, but it keeps some of the themes.

After a bad scare dredging up some bad memories, Fluttershy's friend <friend. Pinkie?> isn't acting her usual self. When she shuts herself off from the rest off society, none of Fluttershy's efforts to comfort her help. To reach the root of this problem, Twilight offers the use of a spell to journey into the mindscape of <friend>, where who knows what's in store?

I think there are a lot of ponies who like a simple, cute story told with humor even if not much of great import happens in it.

There's always room for fics like this. To be honest, I've kind of grown tired of the constant 'equestria was invaded!' or 'NMM returns' fics that have popped up recently. Speaking of fics, Our First Steps is absolutely amazing. Definitely read it.

Speaking of fanfiction: The first five chapters (which I collectively call Crisis I) of Blue Moon in a Red Sky are almost ready to go gold once I run it through a few reviewers. Then some poor pre-reader will have to read through the forty-eight (and hopefully decreasing) pages of Cold War ponies.

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and am usually more of a lurker than an active poster. But after watching MLP over again in anticipation of the new season I was talking about the villains from the series with my friend and we ended up discussing how the villains were all representations of the Seven deadly sins. We theorized Trixy as pride, Luna as Envy, Gilda as wrath, the parasprites as gluttony, the dragon in Dragonshy as sloth, the Diamond Dogs as greed, and then we couldn't think of a good lust example. And I was just kinda curious what other people thought about this or if they had there own ideas or just flat out disagreed. Thanks.

I asked because today I was bored in study hall, having forgot my homework in my locker, and started writing down what I thought a typical morning for Rainbow Dash was like. The idea'd been bouncing around in my head for a few days, but that was the first chance I'd gotten to start writing.

Haven't watched it, for reasons that become more obvious when you know I'm a 24 year old male with neither little offspring nor little siblings to entertain. Is it written by PPG people, as well? Is it funny, or is it just a straight-up show about magic ponies for little girls?

Discord-relevant but not spoilery, what is wrong with this fandom? We got a brief clip of a new character and the internet is flooded with fanart of him. We got a screenshot before that and it fuelled enough art to last us at least a week! I swear it's a good thing the people behind this are so good to us, because the way things stand they could release a 30 second episode every week and this fandom would continue at full power

It was a spin off for Out In The Cold, telling the tale of what befell her after her mom's tragic death. Actually I still am working on that pony tale although there have been hitches on the long and winding road to Chapter Two.

A Pegasus pony who mans (ha!) a supply shop halfway between the Everfree forest and Ponyville. This spirits are high and his mood chipper, despite an almost utter lack of business, since all he really does is stare at the horizon and daydream.

Solace is ridiculously fond of his sliver of Hiberno-Scandineighvian descent, since his tangled mane and tail and slender face are constant reminders. it's a vintage perk. To cash in on the Decoder ring, you have to have at least three slots in lawyer (Rules), and one of them must be a weapon proficiency slot. Harsh, because Lawyer (rules) only shows up on the Magic Users list.

And all the ring really does is help you convert from OD&D up to 2.5 AD&D (that is, the player's option series).
We almost had an update to third, but there was this weird legal issue with some Jackson fellow, about munchkins and d20. I didn't really follow it.

Fun fact: did you know the old tarasque had a Thac0 so low (-1) that he could only be hit if you rolled a 1 on the d20? And then only if you used a weapon that could hit him. Even better! Since it doesn't specify an unmodified d20 roll, which means you need a +4 (I think) or better weapon to hit him... Except your lowest possible roll is a 5! Yay, history of poorly thought out rules!

Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and am usually more of a lurker than an active poster. But after watching MLP over again in anticipation of the new season I was talking about the villains from the series with my friend and we ended up discussing how the villains were all representations of the Seven deadly sins. We theorized Trixy as pride, Luna as Envy, Gilda as wrath, the parasprites as gluttony, the dragon in Dragonshy as sloth, the Diamond Dogs as greed, and then we couldn't think of a good lust example. And I was just kinda curious what other people thought about this or if they had there own ideas or just flat out disagreed. Thanks.
It's a point, though I think it's a more a matter of archetypes than deliberation. It's admittedly going to be a stretch to get an example of Lust from a show aimed at little girls.

And now I can't stop thinking about Fullpony Alchemist.

I asked because today I was bored in study hall, having forgot my homework in my locker, and started writing down what I thought a typical morning for Rainbow Dash was like. The idea'd been bouncing around in my head for a few days, but that was the first chance I'd gotten to start writing.

I suppose once I finish, then, I'll post it up. Hope it lives up to everypony's expectations :smallsmile:

Okay, I have the seed of an idea, and I want your opinion on whether it's worth growing. Base concept: Psychonaut Fluttershy. Not a full crossover mind you, but it keeps some of the themes.

After a bad scare dredging up some bad memories, Fluttershy's friend <friend. Pinkie?> isn't acting her usual self. When she shuts herself off from the rest off society, none of Fluttershy's efforts to comfort her help. To reach the root of this problem, Twilight offers the use of a spell to journey into the mindscape of <friend>, where who knows what's in store?

Now, Pinkie seems the obvious choice. Something with her old family showed up and scared her silly. I imagine her mind being a carnival, like what she imagined the gala to be like, but the further in you go, the thinner the crowds get. Or perhaps everypony in her mind is hiding.

Of course, cases could be made for other ponies too. What's your candidates?

Maybe divide her mind straight down the middle. On the one side you have the parties and the happiness and fun, and on the other side the carnival is completely abandoned. Or maybe just have the abandoned part one small corner. We've seen how Pinkie Pie's fears work, and happens when she slips out of them. Maybe have it so when the ponies at the carnival wander into the abandoned part they turn into cardboard cut-outs, only to change back when they leave.

Hey guys, since I don't see anyone mentioning it yet, I thought I'd point out that CR, a Brony and ThatGuyWithTheGlasses contributor, has just released a video detailing The History of the My Little Pony Franchise (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/teamt/cr/ff/32418-episode-57-my-little-pony-retrospective-part-1). I'm a fan of this guy, since he talks a lot about under appreciated cartoons on his show, and I'm a major animation geek.

This is mainly about generations 1-3.5 of the show, to provide background for his next video, which is apparently going to be all about Friendship is Magic and why he likes it.

What I liked most about this interview is that it was pretty clear that Thiessen really cares about what he's doing, which can actually be pretty rare. Production ponies can often be very cynical about what they're doing, so it's always great to see somepony who really cares and enjoys what they're making.

It was funny to see him struggle to keep certain things secret, where it's pretty clear that he just wanted to start dropping stuff simply because he's been working on them for so long they're normal to him!

Most surprising thing that I learned: That there was no Storyboard Supervisor for season 1.

Overall, you and Tek did a great job, and so did Jason, considering that this was assuredly his first interview of this nature himself, production doesn't get a lot of attention like this.

I think it fits remarkably well, insofar as each villain leans more towards one than any other, and each villain is quasi-unique.

I also second Blueblood as lust, because it makes the RP I started that much more fun.

Beautiful plants and birds and butterflies everywhere, and in the middle of it a massive willow. (Yes, I went into Fluttershy's A Tree territory. Unfortunately the image I've got in my mind requires it and is absolutely amazing that way.)

But! The water isn't always as shallow as it seems. Take one wrong step and you sink into the depths where monsters lurk, restrained by the great tree.

...Actually, vision in my mind's changed. Make it more like one of those forests where there's gigantic trees everywhere growing out of a massive lake. That's probably an easier image to get across, and still works just fine, with Fluttershy being the largest of the trees and protecting all within the forest from harm.

I think it fits remarkably well, insofar as each villain leans more towards one than any other, and each villain is quasi-unique.

Not really as a story, so I guess this is tangential, but a mindscape/dreamscape only need to make as much sense as conveys the right tone.
Fluttershy's surface thoughts are her idealic home, with rolling hills, gentle meadows, light forests and happy animals abounding. The river is a more chill (literally) germanic countryside style river, with shallow waters gushing over the smoothed rocks. More territorial creatures and instincts, the foxes, wolves and bears dwell here.
Atthe end of the river, stepping under the water cuts you off from the above; scene change. It's now a tropical scuba-diving/snorkeling commercial, with vibrant sea life, both flora and fauna, and mermaids, aloft on the currents, tensing a craggy section of coral reef. Into the coral;

Scene change. Deep, forbidding undersea caves, tended by beasts resembling old magic: the gathering art. Mermaids designed after lion fish. Crab men preying on others. Spiky anglers fishing in the dark. An air pocket, up into it! Cool blue sea water reflects onto the smoothed rock as though the sea were backlit;

Scene change. A comfortable dragon's chamber, a fluffy bed. Some implements. The rock is smooth and worn, inviting, as candle and torch light battle with their orange lances the soft blue-green pool ambience of the nearby fountain (ocean? What ocean. This is a dream, it don't make no sense!). A slight breeze gutters the flames, a way out! The rock face darkens, the smooth contours jut and scrape at the cool air around you;

Scene change. An open cave, Tolkienesque overlooks a storm wracked mountain range, where dragons cavort and demons of nightshade and thorn dance at their mistress' whim. All the powers of fire and thunder from the bellies of the clouds who are children of her thoughts at her hooves. Her voice is the voice of storms, which brings ruin to the storm-tossed sailor, the typhoon-struck farmer. And from her vantage point, here on her twisted iron throne as Queen of The Mountain (and all it's powers besides) she spies a warm, comfortable glen, bordered by hill, Dale and wood. A cottage of sweet, login animals that would surely run in terror from a force such as she, no matter how good her intentions;

Scene change. The path down from the mountain throne leads instead to a staircase, wide, shallow and meandering. It plateus on occasion by scenic vistas where every whisper of cloth and breath are thrown back at you, matron the perfect stillness of the beautiful scenery. This is a road of Zen, of quiet and introspection, where one learns to not make waves lest you are driven mad by the sounds of your own haste.

Each different section blends (relatively) seamlessly with the other. But once you have no more frames of reference for the previous setting, itvanishes entirely. If you trip and fall in the river, when you stand up again you will be back in the river; but face down in the water you are somewhere else entirely.

Haven't been posting, or even reading, ever since I saw spoilers for season 2 starting to leak in earnest a couple days ago, and that'll probably continue until I see the first couple episodes of that, but for some reason I feel compelled to share this. I asked because today I was bored in study hall, having forgot my homework in my locker, and started writing down what I thought a typical morning for Rainbow Dash was like. The idea'd been bouncing around in my head for a few days, but that was the first chance I'd gotten to start writing.

A while ago I had an idea for a fic which would be entitled "Pinkie's Perfectly Plain Day" or something... it would just describe a completely normal day for Pinkie, in which absolutely nothing unusual took place. Just her... I don't know, baking, getting stuff from the market, saying hi to her friends, that sort of thing. Not even a party being held that day.

And that idea apparently threw wide open the gates to Pinksanity and transformed my story into something completely opposite of that.

personally am a huge Rainbow fan and am glad that they've managed to keep her consistent throughout the show without making her a bitch.

This. This is the sum total of why I like Rainbow Dash. She's not just a jerk. She has reasons for jerkiness. And she is a kind, loving, rough'n'tumble young lady. Fluttershy is such a lucky gal.


Other highlights - chompy alligator, Apple being extremely stereotypical, more Fluttershy and even less detailed (though still pretty) backgrounds.

I think Coidzor is assuming that Lix's game is going to include elements of Friendship is Magic in with Exalted.

Whereas, I think her intent is to have an Exalted game where everyone just happens to be a pony and the setting is slightly less grimdark and a little bit more silly than the standard Exalted setting.

This disturbs me, because it implies that Exalted has a metric standard that is grimdark and not very silly.
Which means the only thing I thought I knew about exalted is either wrong, or this is an inflated opinion and I should probably stop rambling except for some reason it's continuing. The biggest problem with Full Metal Alchemist ponies is why does Rainbow Dash care enough to give up her wings to save fluttershy. As has been shown Rainbow's wings are crucial to her life so we need connections. Ah. Well, I don't agree that a year is a long time in this context. But what I meant specifically is that the difference between Pinkie (youngest) and Rarity (oldest) probably isn't much more than 2 or 3 years.

Lets say Pinkie is 18, just an arbitrary choice. Twilight would be 18 too, maybe a few months older than Pinkie, maybe close to 19.

Applejack, RD and Fluttershy would then be 19 maybe 20, and Rarity 20 maybe 21.

Hey guys, since I don't see anyone mentioning it yet, I thought I'd point out that CR, a Brony and ThatGuyWithTheGlasses contributor, has just released a video detailing The History of the My Little Pony Franchise (http://thatguywiththeglasses.com/videolinks/teamt/cr/ff/32418-episode-57-my-little-pony-retrospective-part-1). I'm a fan of this guy, since he talks a lot about under appreciated cartoons on his show, and I'm a major animation geek.

This is mainly about generations 1-3.5 of the show, to provide background for his next video, which is apparently going to be all about Friendship is Magic and why he likes it.

Figured some of you might like to see it, especially if you (like me) have had only minimal contact with the franchise prior to FiM. And of course, Part 2 will probably be very relevant to this thread's interests when it comes out.

Party of One was fun for me to watch, except for I think the Spike interrogation scene, but that was mostly because there was this level of awkwardness that well... made me feel awkward ^^;; I liked the party itself, because I'm a fan of the perception vs reality splits when they crop up.

Pinkimena, strictly as the side of Pinkie where she is NOT enjoying herself, and is even down on life because she is not fulfilling her calling I'm okay with. When folks have her go all nuts and become violently psychotic, well that's another story. Alt interpretations aside, Pinkie is simple, unbridled Joy. She loves how she feels when she is happy, and she is only happy when she is spreading that feeling to others. Plainly put, Pinkie is aggressively infectiously joyful. It's her special talent, it's a foundational part of who she is. I honestly don't think that Pinkie is literally capable of causing any form of serious harm to anypony. Yeah, you've got Flutterrage, but Cupcakes!Pinkamena is a thing that is in no way actually Pinkie. It's grimdark, and something I never want to associate with. Interestingly, I have literally just finished watching Call of the Cutie for the second time, wherein Applejack mentions that when she went off to Manehatten and that she was younger than the Crusaders, so I'd say the CMC would probably be on the upper edge of that range - maybe a touch higher (unless Equestria is so lax it allows even younger children to wander off on their own (at least in Pokemon, ten was the minimum age, and you at least had a little bundle of elemental-spewing badass to protect you...)

It also raises and interesting question - Applejack is seen off only by Granny Smith and Bic Mac. Where are her parents? Did they refuse to see her off (falling out over her then-dreams), are they gone by this point (which would assume that Applebloom is already born and tucked safely away in a crib somewehere), or is it as simply as what we see is her inaccurate metaphor for what happened? (After all, we see Twilight and Pinkie's parents, so seems less likely (but possible) just they didn't want to animate new characters...)

In the second case is true, then Applebloom must be at least as old as Spike. (I have always generally assumed that the CMC were born later, and in this case the parental Apples were simply not there, perhaps having already said their farewells, or just omitted from the animation.)

Hopefully, season 2 might shed some light on the subject. It'd be nice to narrow things down.

I don't honestly know how old I'd say they are, in absolute terms. Only relative to each other, and in rough terms.

Pinkimena, strictly as the side of Pinkie where she is NOT enjoying herself, and is even down on life because she is not fulfilling her calling I'm okay with. When folks have her go all nuts and become violently psychotic, well that's another story. Alt interpretations aside, Pinkie is simple, unbridled Joy. She loves how she feels when she is happy, and she is only happy when she is spreading that feeling to others. Plainly put, Pinkie is aggressively infectiously joyful. It's her special talent, it's a foundational part of who she is. I honestly don't think that Pinkie is literally capable of causing any form of serious harm to anypony. Yeah, you've got Flutterrage, but Cupcakes!Pinkamena is a thing that is in no way actually Pinkie. It's grimdark, and something I never want to associate with. Hi everyone, I am new to the forum and am usually more of a lurker than an active poster. But after watching MLP over again in anticipation of the new season I was talking about the villains from the series with my friend and we ended up discussing how the villains were all representations of the Seven deadly sins. We theorized Trixy as pride, Luna as Envy, Gilda as wrath, the parasprites as gluttony, the dragon in Dragonshy as sloth, the Diamond Dogs as greed, and then we couldn't think of a good lust example. And I was just kinda curious what other people thought about this or if they had there own ideas or just flat out disagreed. Thanks.

SEASON 2
I'm not sure I like what we've seen of Discord so far. Granted we haven't seen much, but... I'll hold my judgment until I've seen the whole thing, of course, but so far I'm not impressed.

That thing about taking their wings and horns seems a little too... "Hey, it's getting pretty hard to challenge these ponies with their awesome magic and abilities, let's take it all away so we can keep throwing the same old, mundane challenges at them"

And I'm generally not happy about villains who have the ability to do that sort of thing. It just... tends to rub me the wrong way.

It's hard to judge the character itself from that brief clip. The first few seconds of him reminded me a little too much of Steven Magnet (are they related? Someone write a fic :smalltongue:). I'm also not sure what to think of his appearance and voice. I like that he's not a pony, and the basic concept, but... something about him makes me unsure. Too early to say, I guess

I get the impression Discord could end up ruining at least one of my plots, though... one of the better ones too :smallfrown:

Some answers:

It's one thing to think that you can just leave your loved one with a doctor, but at the situation at hand, with your wife dying in front of you, and uncertain that, even if you found the artifact, you might come back to find her already gone. Plus, there's the whole "Leaving your wife alone in her weakest hour" thing.

As for why Midnight doesn't stay...that's Trixie's doing. She doesn't want Midnight to have to go through what she did, see her mother slowly eaten away by a disease. Better to send her off on what could be a wild goose chase, both so she doesn't have to see it, and so that she doesn't feel completely useless.

Oh, and they are going to prepare Midnight and the others as much as possible, time permitting. They don't have a lot of it, but they do have time to prepare and get her equipment and maybe a guide.

It's a bit of a departure from my episodic style, so I'd have to find ways of having it 'fit' into the show's existing style, which might be tough.

Yeah, that does seem lazy, but Fullmetal would still work for her; it's a pun on him being really stubborn and having metal limbs, and she is (or would be, in the latter case) that. Maybe, since the ponies already seem to have a name that's particular, she'd get something like "Frank" or "Susan." :smalltongue:

If the tree could move like the suit of armor (it has joint, etc), then she would be able to walk around in it, so all Dash would have to do is transmute it a bit. It would also probably have to be alive (so it wouldn't start decomposing), though I don't know how that would work if they're still going to be traveling all over creation.

One thing about bronyhood, it's made my dreams a lot more interesting. I had a dream that was a follow-on to a dream fragment that as far as I can tell existed for no other reason but to have yet another way of justifying self-insert fanfiction. :smallredface:
TL;DR, things fell apart (it's scientific) but in the wake of the End Of Days a lot of bronies managed to reincarnate in Equestria. The amusing part of the dream was that rather than dealing with amazing adventures (or shipping :smallbiggrin:) it was basically about the attempt to cope with the sudden influx of immigrant ponies (in the dream, there was an estimate of tens of thousands). Celestia had set up what amounted to refugee camps in order to keep Ponyville and Canterlot from being overrun by bronies, which is where I-as-Topaz encountered Shimmer and Midnight (or more accurately, Phoe and Esper in Shimmer and Midnight's bodies). SiuiS and Brazen were mentioned as being in the camp, but I never ran into them, and I don't member anypony else from ponythread -- but then again, it wasn't that long a dream and I spent quite a bit of it answering questions from a unicorn with a clipboard (who I didn't recognize). I did get to meet Princess Celestia, though, which was awesome.

Fun fact: did you know the old tarasque had a Thac0 so low (-1) that he could only be hit if you rolled a 1 on the d20? And then only if you used a weapon that could hit him. Even better! Um....not quite. It depends on the edition you play. I forget where the breakoff point is, but some of the earlier editions, as well as the other Dungeons and Dragons line that was out used charts. I don't remember where the change happened, since I never played Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, but I know that Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Second Edition it works like that.

If you are at all interested in the other D&D line, look up the Rules Cyclopedia, it is the end product of that line and pretty fantastic.

I'm not sure I like what we've seen of Discord so far. Granted we haven't seen much, but... I'll hold my judgment until I've seen the whole thing, of course, but so far I'm not impressed.

That thing about taking their wings and horns seems a little too... "Hey, it's getting pretty hard to challenge these ponies with their awesome magic and abilities, let's take it all away so we can keep throwing the same old, mundane challenges at them"

And I'm generally not happy about villains who have the ability to do that sort of thing. It just... tends to rub me the wrong way.

Obviously they'll find some way to defeat him, or maybe even turn him from enemy to friend, and maybe (hopefully) it'll be a clever way.

But that doesn't change the fact that having a villain do this sort of thing is a bad idea, and really kinda irks me. Maybe that's just me, though.

There's a lot of room for doing things different than NMM while still not doing what Discord did in that video. NMM was a little underwhelming I think (but then, it's a kid's show).

I think I like the basic premise of Discord, and his goofy character, I just don't like what he did there. That particular way to deal with the flight/magic was just really cheap.

I'm not saying it can't possibly be done well, ever... maybe I'll be greatly surprised by the writers' genius. It just makes me worried.

We have, however, seen examples that friendship is not a required element of all Magic. Not only form Discord either. We KNOW that Trixy doesn't really have friends, just fans till they find out she's a fraud. Nightmare Moon, not Luna, but Nightmare Moon, who was a willful lone wolf, had enough magic to give Celestia a hard time. Heck, Twilight herself, at the start of episode one, we now know, is highly accomplished and talented in the use and study of magic, and this was during a time in her life when she though pouring over books in any library that would let her in the door was inherently more important then any form of social activity's or even attempting to make friends.

And regarding Discord (Love the voice actor they picked for him.).

I see this going one of a number of ways.

He might be tricked into beating himself.
They may manage to re-summon the elements and curve stop him the same way they did with Nightmare Moon.
He may end up losing the elements over too them, at which point he is defeated, but he will be returning. In this case, he becomes a recurring villian, who is a real threat, since he's powerful enough that only the elements of Harmony can defeat him head on.

Or, maybe, just maybe, he's not actually the bad guy. He wants them too think he is, so they will fight him. So that he can either test them all, or train them all, or both, for some other purpose.

I'd personally like to see the last two. I know the last one is unlikely given that would mean the tone of the show got Darker and even more complex, which I don't know they want too risk given they already have an older audience then they wanted, but I can hope.

Well, once again, I look rather stupid for not doing any research first. I had no idea that Thac0 was used anywhere else, besides Second Edition.

I blame the fact that my only contact with any D&D besides 3rd edition was through Icewind Dale, which apparently used a combination of second and third edition rules. How that manages to even remotely work, I have no idea, and honestly, I don't really want to know.

We have, however, seen examples that friendship is not a required element of all Magic. Not only form Discord either. We KNOW that Trixy doesn't really have friends, just fans till they find out she's a fraud. Nightmare Moon, not Luna, but Nightmare Moon, who was a willful lone wolf, had enough magic to give Celestia a hard time. Heck, Twilight herself, at the start of episode one, we now know, is highly accomplished and talented in the use and study of magic, and this was during a time in her life when she though pouring over books in any library that would let her in the door was inherently more important then any form of social activity's or even attempting to make friends.

And regarding Discord (Love the voice actor they picked for him.).

I see this going one of a number of ways.

He might be tricked into beating himself.
They may manage to re-summon the elements and curve stop him the same way they did with Nightmare Moon.
He may end up losing the elements over too them, at which point he is defeated, but he will be returning. In this case, he becomes a recurring villian, who is a real threat, since he's powerful enough that only the elements of Harmony can defeat him head on.

Or, maybe, just maybe, he's not actually the bad guy. He wants them too think he is, so they will fight him. So that he can either test them all, or train them all, or both, for some other purpose.

I'd personally like to see the last two. I know the last one is unlikely given that would mean the tone of the show got Darker and even more complex, which I don't know they want too risk given they already have an older audience then they wanted, but I can hope.

SEASON 2

Well, once again, I look rather stupid for not doing any research first. I had no idea that Thac0 was used anywhere else, besides Second Edition.

I blame the fact that my only contact with any D&D besides 3rd edition was through Icewind Dale, which apparently used a combination of second and third edition rules. How that manages to even remotely work, I have no idea, and honestly, I don't really want to know.


Hey, you were right. In 2nd Edition, THAC0 is Attack Roll + Armor Class >= THAC0 to get a hit, and like I said, I am not positive whether 1st Edition AD&D used that or the charts. There are two branching versions of D&D that split in the 70s and were then both harvested for ideas when 3rd Edition came along.

I'd pull out my Rules Cyclopedia to tell you how the charts when, but its just about time for bed on my end, so I'll save you from that overly long lecture.

Wow, just saw your comment on THAC0 not being used anywhere else. It was, it was just calculated differently in other editions. *Sigh* Don't feel like pulling out the charts, but if memory serves, it was something like this:

A Warrior with a THAC0 of 20 rolls a die, and then compares it to a chart, since some of the numbers will repeat on the list. I only have the one set of rules on that one though, and it varies from edition to edition like I said. I for one am only competently knowledgeable on 2nd edition ad&d, 3.0, and 3.5.

Season 2 Based on what little we've seen, I'd say he get's the Elements of Harmony, and/or Twilight and Rarity's Horns and Fluttershy and Dashes Wings.

And this opens up another option I overlooked in last post.

He might have plans of some nature that require him to have access too the elements. This could either end in him being gone for good after the premier or could lead to recurring villain, possibly with the good guy in disguise thing being held in reserve.

Twilight and Pinkie are also around the same age, I think. I'm not sure why I feel Twilight is one of the youngest, I just do. She's young, but in some ways she's ahead of her age.

yes. "Letters to Melenrhien" would be a fun read. I could compile them and post them as a block at the start of each thread, too.

For best effect, each time you send a letter in-game, you should write one out. Each session would be a series of letters. Being short and sweet will help the writing flow, and help the verisimilitude.



It also raises and interesting question - Applejack is seen off only by Granny Smith and Bic Mac. Where are her parents? Did they refuse to see her off (falling out over her then-dreams), are they gone by this point (which would assume that Applebloom is already born and tucked safely away in a crib somewehere), or is it as simply as what we see is her inaccurate metaphor for what happened? (After all, we see Twilight and Pinkie's parents, so seems less likely (but possible) just they didn't want to animate new characters...)*

In the second case is true, then Applebloom must be at least as old as Spike. (I have always generally assumed that the CMC were born later, and in this case the parental Apples were simply not there, perhaps having already said their farewells, or just omitted from the animation.)

Hopefully, season 2 might shed some light on the subject. It'd be nice to narrow things down.

Narrative conceit. Twilight's parents were shown because questions as to her relationship with Celestia are important to te story, and Lauren wanted to make a point of Twilight Sparkle's mother being Twilight from older generations of MLP.

It's not as important to canon that we find out about AJ's family any more than we already have.


I would like to remind ponies to make warnings for the content of stuff they're linking or putting in spoilers, since that's what got several bronies to leave at one point. The warning about there being a curse word doesn't tell you what the actual content of the strip is, and some ponies may not like this.

Exalted, depending on how you play, can be a light hearted super powered romp, or a depressing game of 'who can leave a marginally larger scar on the face of Creation before your inevitable pointless death drags it one more step to one of various horrible endpoints?'
Personally I like somewhere in the middle, where it swings between cheerful and DAAARK and you have a decent chance*of actually fixing stuff.

Sounds about right to me. That's even the attitude I took into werewolf. Which is of course a game about the apocalypse wherein the storyteller is encourage to use crazy-high lethality, aggravated wounds, maiming backstabbing and betrayal as narrative tools.

I'm kinda glad I never got a shot to play, actually. I approach combat situations like the marine corps does; first in, last out, highest casualty rate. And not a still-living party member has appreciated it yet =/

Hmmm... now that I have two ideas, I wonder if I should go and start planning one, or come up with more ideas for later. *If I do start plotting a story, which one? *Rarity versus sly cloth merchant (who still needs a name. *Would 'Caveat Emptor' be too clunky of a pony name) does have the benefits of Rarity exploring the outside limits of her vocabulary whenever she gets ripped off, and throwing things. *On the other hand, exploring Fluttershy's mindscape sounds fascinating. *It's a bit of a departure from my episodic style, so I'd have to find ways of having it 'fit' into the show's existing style, which might be tough.

One thing about bronyhood, it's made my dreams a lot more interesting. I had a dream that was a follow-on to a dream fragment that as far as I can tell existed for no other reason but to have yet another way of justifying self-insert fanfiction. :smallredface:
TL;DR, things fell apart (it's scientific) but in the wake of the End Of Days a lot of bronies managed to reincarnate in Equestria. The amusing part of the dream was that rather than dealing with amazing adventures (or shipping :smallbiggrin:) it was basically about the attempt to cope with the sudden influx of immigrant ponies (in the dream, there was an estimate of tens of thousands). Celestia had set up what amounted to refugee camps in order to keep Ponyville and Canterlot from being overrun by bronies, which is where I-as-Topaz encountered Shimmer and Midnight (or more accurately, Phoe and Esper in Shimmer and Midnight's bodies). SiuiS and Brazen were mentioned as being in the camp, but I never ran into them, and I don't member anypony else from ponythread -- but then again, it wasn't that long a dream and I spent quite a bit of it answering questions from a unicorn with a clipboard (who I didn't recognize). I did get to meet Princess Celestia, though, which was awesome.

And almost like a sidebar, at the bottom of the page; the tarasque can only be hit by a roll of '1' because his thac0 is in the negatives. It's not even a tarasque only thing; the Monstrous Compendium added a rule which applies to ANYTHING with a negative thac0.
Bonus points because the AD&D DM I knew used a fumble chart. Good god was that retarded.

And it depends on your class choice. That sounds like you've only got 2 prof. Slots invested, but if you aren't a magic user, then the first slot requires double, and you'd have he necessary number of slots without the actual benefits the membership was supposed to be based on.

Um....not quite. *It depends on the edition you play. *I forget where the breakoff point is, but some of the earlier editions, as well as the other Dungeons and Dragons line that was out used charts. *I don't remember where the change happened, since I never played Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, but I know that Advanced Dungeons and Dragons Second Edition it works like that.

1ed. Is the last set to use the charts, along with weapon speed, attacks/round, round segments and all.
2ed. Added modifiers with qualifiers, clarified the difference between modified and unmodified d20 rolls, and used a thac0 list while abandoning the cross-reference chart. Everything else was technically in the rules but was never used in any game I've ever played. Or seen. Or heard of.
Hay, now I can't remember what weapon speed did. I don't think it modified your round-segment directly... Hm.


If you are at all interested in the other D&D line, look up the Rules Cyclopedia, it is the end product of that line and pretty fantastic.

Well, once again, I look rather stupid for not doing any research first. I had no idea that Thac0 was used anywhere else, besides Second Edition.

I blame the fact that my only contact with any D&D besides 3rd edition was through Icewind Dale, which apparently used a combination of second and third edition rules. How that manages to even remotely work, I have no idea, and honestly, I don't really want to know.

Thac0, thac0 charts and BaB function almost in the same way.
The chart listed the required number (modified) on d20 for each class type (warrior, priest, rogue, M-User) to hit any AC from -10 to 10. In Ad&d 2ed. They mostly did away with the chart, and just gave you required number to hit 0, allowin you to do the rest of the math.

In both cases, repeats of certain numbers corresponded to fractional attack bonus increases in 3.5ed. It would take a Magic User like myself several levels to get from 20 to 19, just like it takes a couple levels to really hit stride with BaB.

Funfact! I can't recall where I found it, but I read what was basically a read-through of every Dragon Magazine up to 3.0. Dungeons and Dragons was the kooky game you were encouraged to customize and houserule, where Advanced dungeons and dragons was he game that was designed for tournament play, and all of the designers repeatedly said that if you changed anything, no matter how much fun it was, you were no longer playing Advamced Dungeons and Dragons, and they denounced your abomination for the miscreant it was.

Wish I could find that again, it was fascinating. There was an implied setting that was actually really cool, and never spelled out.

Hey, you were right. In 2nd Edition, THAC0 is Attack Roll + Armor Class >= THAC0 to get a hit, and like I said, I am not positive whether 1st Edition AD&D used that or the charts. There are two branching versions of D&D that split in the 70s and were then both harvested for ideas when 3rd Edition came along.

I'd pull out my Rules Cyclopedia to tell you how the charts when, but its just about time for bed on my end, so I'll save you from that overly long lecture.

Wow, just saw your comment on THAC0 not being used anywhere else. It was, it was just calculated differently in other editions. *Sigh* Don't feel like pulling out the charts, but if memory serves, it was something like this:

A Warrior with a THAC0 of 20 rolls a die, and then compares it to a chart, since some of the numbers will repeat on the list. I only have the one set of rules on that one though, and it varies from edition to edition like I said. I for one am only competently knowledgeable on 2nd edition ad&d, 3.0, and 3.5.

Huh. You know, I never actually found an easy formula for thac0, I always did it the hard way out of habit. Thanks!

Why is rarity the oldest?
I'm 25. Most people I've met who fit Rarity's description are younger than I.
Rarity is also one to put up a good facade, but is one of the less mature ponies. Dump some trash on her hair? Nervous breakdown for all sorts of dumb reasons?

I can't see it. I would put rarity on the younger end of the spectrum. I think Applejack, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash are older. Possibly even Twilight, who is the youngest acting most of the time but also the wisest. She's a weird'n.
While you do make a good point about Rarity acting less mature sometimes, what makes me feel like she's towards the older end of the mane cast is how together she is for the rest of her life. She runs a successful clothing business, her interactions with Fluttershy as friends buy also as a guardian apparent of her younger sister. Sure she's a bit spoiled, but it's almost like she's earned it in most cases, with the worst offender being the search for HIM, but that smacks more of a lifelong dream since fillyhood. I had more opinions when I started this paragraph, but now I have forgotten because I have The Gala stuck in my head tonight.

AJ, i could see her honestly being one of the most mature, but also one of the youngest potentials. Just because she acts mature doesn't mean she's older. She simply has SO many responsibilities around the farm that that's just a byproduct. She and Big Mac run the whole show, and you see her as the primary vendor of wares they produce. It's hard to have so much under your belt and NOT seem a bit past your years, I'd think.

Fluttershy is pretty easy to see (for me) as the oldest give or take. We do have the benchmark of "older than pinkie pie", but she's just so darn motherly that it's hard to think of her as anything but a mother hen doting on her animals and the CMC. So adorable /)^3^(\

Twilight, I could see her being younger, but really most of them are similar anyway. She's hella awkward, that's for sure. The special kind you get when you spend all your time away from people your own age, you know?

Either way, I feel like that's less important overall than the fact that they're clearly all 23-26 or so. With the exception of Pinkie Pie, they are all mature and independent enough in a way that tells me they're comfortable being on their own, and have been such for a number of years, while at the same time maintaining a sense of youthfulness and now I'm having one of those "dear lord this is my little pony what am I doing with my life" moments time to move on to the next quote.


yes. "Letters to Melenrhien" would be a fun read. I could compile them and post them as a block at the start of each thread, too.

For best effect, each time you send a letter in-game, you should write one out. Each session would be a series of letters. Being short and sweet will help the writing flow, and help the verisimilitude.

First session was a success! I sputtered around with my backstory a bit when we were going around the table, but I mostly pulled it together. Spike has proven himself endearing to the party if not useless at level 1, haha. Oh well! Magic Missile is now cannonically apples, and I severely frigged up a hobgoblin with Hideous Laughter. The party is less than thrilled that my remaining spells are charm person, dancing lights, and mage hoof http://i.imgur.com/2lTPE.jpg Ima go hide in a corner now for the rest of combat tonight!

Okay, I never even noticed the RP subforum wayyy down there at the bottom of the list, I'll totally start posting in there. I'm making a point to take notes during the session so that I can write them down. That is a good point, that I'll have Uial's letters be each intsalment. That actually won't be my first session, as we're still kind of in the middle of things. But since i have that whole "is a wizard" thing I do have lots of time set aside where i'm off by myself and can write :smallsmile: Stay posted!

Fluttershy is suffering relapse from some emotional trauma from when she was young. What is it?
- She accidentally hurt or was unable to save some an animal of some sort?
- She went into rage mode over something trivial and scared away a friend?
- Something else?
Result: She blames herself for what happened, and this is possibly the cause for the worse cases of her shyness: fear that this would happen again.

Parts of Fluttershy's Personality:
- Nurturing Fluttershy (dominant) Shaped as Mother Nature Fluttershy? Location: cottage/meadow
- Fearful Fluttershy? (combine with Personal Demon?) Shaped as Filly Fluttershy? Location: Dark Forest
- Rage Fluttershy / Courageshy (The same? One revealed to be the other? Two separate ones?) Shaped as... what? Location: unknown.

Given that she was shown as being bullied and shy before she ever discovered the ground and all the animals, I'd suggest the scared-off potential friend -- "You're going to LIKE ME!" -- and ending up frightening herself most of all.

Result: She blames herself for what happened, and this is possibly the cause for the worse cases of her shyness: fear that this would happen again.

Pinkie only seems to get angry or depressed under more extreme and extended circumstances; if you want to go that way I'd save anger for the climactic confrontation.
