I'm new to the metamagic feats in pathfinder. If I were to maximize and empower a fireball at the max die cap which I believe is 10 d6's, what do the feats actually do? Thanks for the help.

If they work the same as they do in 3.5, the fireball would do 60 + 10d6/2. You always roll the dice for empower, even when you maximize it.

Yeah one of the dev's has confirmed this interpretation, though I don't use it. I say empower + max fireball = 90 damage.

It's not so much an "interpretation" as "clearly written that way."

An empowered, maximized spell gains the separate benefits of each feat: the maximum result plus half the normally rolled result.

Added after the question was asked on paizo boards.

That way of doing empower is official in the same way that 4e errata is official. If you don't use internet sources, it's not in your rules.

Which would be your choice to ignore the rule, as you can do with any rule in the book as well.

I don't see how you can argue that official clarifications and errata are somehow a step below the text in the books, unless you're doing so as a tactic to try to make your alternative explanation more palatable.
