Not everyone can/is allowed to get a mount from a class feature/feat. What's the best you can get with gold?

Anything with an entry in rearing in its stat block, really. In its rearing entry it should mention the creature's cost, both as an egg and hatched, and the handle animal checks necessary to rear them. Look at the hippogriff (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/hippogriff.htm) as an example. Then of course you need to be able to make the ride (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/ride.htm) check to use the mount properly. Any creature with no such entry needs to have things such as cost invented by a DM, if they deem it suitable as a mount.

^: It was a shame they forgot about doing that in most of the books past the MM1, really. :smallfrown:

OP: Rhinos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqinPt-vN54&NR=1).

I mean, how often does 600 gp get you a rhino? Every time, but that's beside the point.

It's a rhino.

That you get to ride. Into your enemies.

But, in all honesty, Warbeast from MMII on a Magebred (ECS, IIRC) Roc (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/roc.htm), probably. And maybe dungeonbred to taste.

Battletitans aren't halfbad, either, especially if you can pimp them out in the same way with warbeast and magebred. Or just magebred for 2x the price.

It depends on your WBL.
At first level, a riding dog (We all know it's better than a 1st lev. fighter).
Later on, it's more a matter of DM's decisions on what's available.

Incidentally a fighter is also the only one who can afford a riding dog using WBL at 1st level... and nothing else, not even food or weapons or the barding the mount needs. I'd try a pony or light horse until you can afford something for combat like a warhorse. Or maybe a fighter with a quarterstaff (free), a high enough dex to make DC 10 ride checks consistently, and cross-class ranks in survival for food. That'd make an interesting level 1 concept.

This is getting off-topic but if a druid tries to start the game with a riding dog trained for combat then put ranks in profession and ask the DM for 10+ weeks of profession checks as extra starting gold, to match the druid's 10-20+ weeks of handle animal checks to finally get the DC 20's he needs. You'll more than double your starting wealth that way and be far better equipped.

For higher level mounts I've noticed griffons, hippogriffs, unicorns, pegasus and nightmares. Note that you can also get them as your cohort with the leadership feat and then even progress them with class levels.
