Petals as Characters?

So I was looking at this warlock handbook here (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19871406/Warlock_Information_Compilation?pg=1).

I was interested in playing the petal race. However, upon looking in MM III, I didn't see anywhere listed playing petals as characters. Later I found this (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=189980) thread about playable races (see post #2)



My question is: Are petals a playable race or not? Or are they simply generally allowed as a playable races? Where do those stats come from if so?

Petal - tiny fey (MM3) 15 ft move, fly 60ft, -8 Str, +10 Dex, +4 Con, +4 Int, +8 Cha, Sleep Songs, DR 5/cold iron, (?), LA +2 "

The stats are the way you calculate any race:
Stat -10/11= actual stat bonus.
But Petals are Cohort only.

Ok, I see how the stats are obtained. Is there a balance reason they are cohort only? Do you think it is likely I could get away with playing one as a PC?

keep in mind that (cohort) has no defined rules restrictions. it's fairly clear that what it's intended to mean, but what it actually says is that it's particularly suitable as a cohort, not unsuitable otherwise.

there's some rules wonkiness in the 1 HD trading, though. really, though, if this is a real game, ask your DM.
