I've been playing around with a Paladin/Aglarondan griffon rider designed to be fun over the range of levels 1-20 with a focus on three areas:

Mount - Flying mount assuming a griffon from Aglarondan Griffon Rider prc (taking a hippogriff at level 6 or griffon at level 8 as per the DMG is also feasible)
Mounted combat - Obtaining the relevant feat chain at level 1
Smite - Awsome Smite feat gained at level 6

Race: Human

Starting Stats (32 pb):

STR: 14
DEX: 10
CON: 14
INT: 10
WIS: 14
CHA: 16

Level progression: Paladin 5 - AGR 1 - Paladin 14

Feats (2 flaws):
Level 1:
Power attack
Mounted combat
Ride-by-attack
Able learner
Level 3
Extra smite
Level 6
Awesome smite
(AGR bonus: Flyby attack when mounted)
Level 9
Battle blessing
Level 12
Divine vigor
Level 15
Spirited charge
Level 18
Divine might

Important skills:
Need 5 ranks in Spot
10 ranks in Ride
5 ranks in Diplomacy to qualify for AGR

What is nice about this build is that the PRC stacks with Paladin to determine mount HD etc progression, and is thus given at 2 levels earlier than what is suggested in the DMG.

The griffon will end up with 8 additional HD, granting 2 feats. Battle jump comes to mind.

Helpful suggestions for improvements are welcome!

I think divine vigor is not good enough.Maybe a weapon focus or extra smite.
But paladin can be fun at all levels if there isn't overoptimised level 9 casters in they group, because they will outshine you :(

Why are you taking those 14 levels of Paladin and not, for example, Halfling Outrider? If you want a cool pet, look up Ubermount.

^: This ubermount? (http://www.dnd-wiki.org/wiki/Ubermount_%283.5e_Optimized_Character_Build%29) Google seems to be rather unforthcoming on the subject.

Original thread (http://community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/75882/19866958/Supermount!)that named the build-type, IIRC.

IIRC, Mount Handbook (http://brilliantgameologists.com/boards/index.php?topic=7414)should have the 3 items that give you the mounted combat feats, although, the lance of faerun you really just want to reverse engineer for the feat cost and slap on a weapon without the other baggage.

And an interesting tidbit, apparently Person Man took a look at the Pally Special Mount (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=106815).

Nah, not that one. Someone got the Supermount to something like 105 bonus HD a long while ago, I'm pretty sure it was posted or at least linked on these forums. Either that or I'm misremembering.
